Detailed Lesson Plan

Grade 9

I. LEARNING OUTCOMES

A. Learning Competency:
1. explain how the respiratory and circulatory systems work together to transport nutrients, gases, and
other molecules to and from the different parts of the body; S9LT-la-b26
B. Learning Objectives:
At the end of 60 minutes discussion, the students should be able to:
a. explain the different types of circulation;
b. draw the three major parts of the circulatory system ; and
c. appreciate the importance of a healthy lifestyle in avoiding circulatory diseases.

II. LEARNING CONTENT

A. Topic : Circulatory System

B. Reference : Science Learners Module Grade 9 pp.11-27
C. Content Standard : The learners demonstrate an understanding of how the different
structures of the circulatory and respiratory systems work
together to transport oxygen-rich blood and nutrients to the
different parts of the body.
D. Performance Standard : The learners should be able to conduct an information
dissemination activity on effective ways of taking care of the
respiratory and circulatory systems based on data gathered from
the school or local health workers.
E. Values Integration : Students will be able to able to appreciate the importance of a
healthy lifestyle in avoiding circulatory diseases.

F. Instructional Material : projector, laptop, chalk, eraser, board, pencil, piece of paper,
marker pen and cartolina.

III. PROCEDURE/LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES

1. Introductory/Routinary Activity
1. Prayer
In the name of the father…..
2. Checking of attendance
Who are absent today?......
3. Classroom management
Please arrange your chairs…

2. Active Review
Good morning ma’am.
Good morning class!

Before we proceed,
Ma’am!
Paul, please do a recap of our lesson yesterday.
Yesterday, we discussed the respiratory system.

Very good. Now, Alvin what is respiratory system

Ma’am, respiratory system is made up of organs in
again?
the body that helps us to breathe.

Ma’am, respiratory system is responsible in our

What is the importance of it?
breathing system, without it, we cannot be able to
inhale and exhale because it is where the
exchange of gases happen.

Very well said, it seems that you understand well

our discussion, so I think we can already proceed.

3. Motivation “Complete the word”

Before we proceed to our next topic, let us have a

game. I will call this game “Complete the word.”
I will give you pieces of paper and a marker pen,
your task is to write in the complete word on the
paper after I flash the incomplete word. Did you
Yes, ma’am.
understand class?

So let us begin the game. CIRCULATION

Word 1: C_ _ _ U_ _ T _ _ N HEART
Word 2: _ E A _ T BLOOD VESSELS
Word 3: B _ _ O D V _ S S _ _ _ PULMONARY
Word 4: P _ L M _ _ _ R _ CORONARY
Word 5: C _ R _ N _ R _

Okay, class did you enjoy the game? Yes, ma’am.

Introduction of the Topic.

Based from the words we formed, I think our topic
Now, what do you think our topic for today Allen?
is about the circulatory system
That is right! Our topic is about the Circulatory
System and how it works. Here are our lesson At the end of 60 minutes discussion, the students
objectives. should be able to:
a. explain the different types of circulation;
b. draw the three major parts of the
circulatory system ; and
c. appreciate the importance of a healthy
lifestyle in avoiding circulatory diseases.

Thank you.

Developmental Activity

1. ACTIVITY “Draw my parts”

To further understand this system, we will have
another activity. I will divide you into three and give
you a drawing materials and your task is to draw the
three major parts of the circulatory system. Then,
after you will present your work and discuss how
this part works.
You will be graded by the following:
Artistry – 30%
Presentation – 30%
Organization of Ideas – 25%
Promptness – 15%
Are we clear class? Yes, ma’am! We understand.

Kindly begin class. (Students do the activity)

Time is up!
Very good. Let us proceed now to presentation.

2. ANALYSIS

Group 1, please paste your work. Good morning classmates, we draw one of the
major parts of the circulatory system which is the
heart, the function of heart is to pumps the blood
throughout the body.

Very good, heart is a very important and vital organ

on our body. Let us give them a Bravo clap.

Next, group 2. Ma’am, we draw blood vessels, the function of this

part is to carry the blood throughout the body. It
includes arteries, veins and capillaries.

That is right, each kind of blood vessels have their

own special blood that they carry.
Let us give them an Boom Panes clap.
Next group please. Ma’am, we draw blood, the function of this part is to
carry the materials throughout the bodies, these
materials are the nutrients and minerals needed by
our body in order to function and develop .

That is right. Let us give them a Kwitis clap.

Very good everyone. Now, we already know the
different parts of the circulatory system. Let us
tackle now the different types of circulation. What Ma’am, the types of circulation are the pulmonary,
are these Miguel? coronary an systemic circulation.

Very good, now what is the difference of three?

Rosita. Pulmonary circulation is the movement of blood
from the heart to the lungs and back to the lungs,
coronary circulation is the movement of the blood
through the tissues of the heart whiles the systemic
is the movement of blood from the heart to the rest
of the body, excluding the lungs.

That is right. Those are the parts of the circulatory

system and the types of circulation.

3. ABSTRACTION “Word Find”

Now let us have another activity I have here a word
puzzle and what you will do is to find words that are
related to our topic .Did you understand class? Are
you ready? Yes ma’am. We are ready.

Hidden words:
 Arteries
 Atrium
 Beat
 Blood
 Circulation
 Heart
 Nutrients
 Oxygen
 Valves
 Veins
Very good everyone, a big hand students.  Ventricles
 Waste
4. APPLICATION

Now what do you think will happen, if a person is

having a healthy lifestyle? Rosa.

Very good Rosa. Jane, what do you think will

Ma’am if a person is living in a healthy way of
happen if we do not take care of our circulatory
course he/she has a greater immunity in disease
system.
and illnesses.

Negative lifestyle will weakens your system while

healthy lifestyle leads to complete wellness. Vices,
stressful environments and unhealthy eating habits
So, what is the best way to take care of ourselves.
can cause various diseases, specifically of the
circulatory system.

We must do the following:

 Balanced diet
 Regular exercise
 Adequate rest
Very well said, that are the ways to take care our
body system in general.  Proper hygiene
 Avoid cigarette smoking

4. GENERALIZATION  Avoid alcohol drinking.

To summarize our discussion, make a graphic

organizer of the circulatory system. Put it in a one-
half crosswise. I will give you 3 minutes to this.

Thank you very much and good day. Good bye

class, see you on tomorrow. (The students do the activity.)

Good bye ma’am.

IV. EVALUATION

Answer the following questions briefly.

1. The nutrients obtained from the food during digestion are supplied by the circulatory system to the body.
What does the circulatory system distribute to the body as it works with the respiratory system?
2. If solid and liquid wastes are removed from the body through defecation and urination, what is released
by the body as waste during respiration?
3. What happens to the diaphragm when a person breathes in or inhales?
4. Why is the human heart called a double pump?
5. What will happen if oxygen is not transported by the blood to the different parts of the body?

V. ASSIGNMENT
Answer the following questions briefly.
1. Since the valves act as the doors of the heart, what might happen if these doors do not close?
2. When we breathe in, we inhale many gases present in the air, including oxygen. What do you think
Happens to the gases that are not needed by the body?
3. You always hear and see the statement, “Government Warning: Cigarette smoking is dangerous to
your health “. How does cigarette smoking increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases?
4. How is non-Mendelian inheritance different from Mendel’s observation.
5. What is the role of DNA in the transmission of traits?
