C Activities

1 Imagine that you have been to Ireland for a holiday. Write a story about your holiday. Write
about the places that you went to, the people that you met, and the things that you did.

During my vacation in Ireland, I visited different wonderful and incredible places. This country is
not just about St. Patrick's Day, Celts, leprechauns, or Guinness beer, as many people think. One of
the places I visited was Cork, one of the quietest cities despite being the second most populated
city in Ireland. Located to the southwest on the River Lee, and forming a small island as an urban
center, the main characteristic of Cork is its peace. To the point of giving you the feeling of being in
a small town with little noise of horns and people walking carefree.

I explored the center easily on foot. Among the main places that I was able to visit is the Victorian
Quarter, where the famous McCurtain Street is, ideal for art and bohemian lovers, or simply for
those who like the colors and the relaxed cultural atmosphere.

Another place I visited was Cobh, a small coastal town that is part of the Cork port complex and is
steeped in a lot of history. It was the last port where the Titanic stopped. Here you can also find
the cathedral with the same name, the port with multicolored houses and an original wooden
dock from the Titanic. Also, I was able to visit the Lusitania Memorial, another ship famous for
having sunk during World War II.

The conversations in Ireland are unique, I was able to meet a lot of people, in places like pubs. The
Irish have a reputation for being welcoming and friendly, which is like saying they love to chat,
whether with friends or strangers. They can entertain with their humor, alarm with their
propensity to get into a good debate, and be blunt with their razor-sharp wit. They are also
masters of provocation, something that might at first seem hurtful but is soon revealed to be an
intrinsic element of the way they relate to each other.

I was able to taste some of the dishes and desserts of this country, among these, I tried the Irish
Stew, Fish and chips, Rhubarb Crumble, whiskey chocolate cake, Guinness Stew, Apple Cake,
seafood chowder, salmon, bacon and cabbage.

2 Write a conversation between a Catholic Nationalist who wants the British to leave Northern
Ireland, and a Protestant Unionist who wants the British to stay. Act out your conversation in front
of the class. Then discuss the problema. What do you think is the right thing to do about it?

Catholic Nationalist (NC): Have you seen the news lately? The situation in Northern Ireland
remains tense. It is time for the British to step down and allow our country to come together
completely and independently.

Protestant Unionist (UP): I can't believe you're saying that. Northern Ireland is part of the United
Kingdom and must remain so. The British have protected us and been part of our identity for
generations.

NC: But we cannot ignore the fact that the British presence has caused deep divisions in our
society. Independence would allow us to forge our own path and leave behind a legacy of conflict
and division.

UP: But at what cost? Independence would only fan the flames of conflict. We need to stand
united under the British flag to ensure stability and security for all citizens of Northern Ireland.

NC: But at what price are we willing to maintain that union? Should we sacrifice our identity and
our freedom for the sake of stability? I think it's time for us to take the reins of our own destiny.

UP: It's not about sacrificing identity, it's about recognizing that we are part of something bigger
than ourselves. The union with the United Kingdom gives us opportunities and protections that we
would not have otherwise. We cannot let nationalism divide us further.

NC: But don't you think it's time to leave the past behind and build a future where all citizens of
Northern Ireland can live together in peace and harmony, without the shadow of British
domination?

UP: Sure, but I don't think independence is the answer. We must work together within the existing
framework to address our differences and build a better future for all people in Northern Ireland,
regardless of their ethnic or religious background.

NC: I agree that we must work together, but I believe that independence is the only way to break
the cycle of conflict and division that has plagued us for so long. Only when we are masters of our
own destiny can we truly reconcile and move forward as a society.

UP: Although we may not agree on this point, I think we both share a desire to see Northern
Ireland prosper. Maybe we can find common ground and work together toward a better future for
all who call this land home.

NC: I hope so. If we can put aside our differences and work together, I believe there is hope for a
brighter future for Northern Ireland.

UP: I agree. Together, we can overcome any obstacle and build a future where we can all live in
peace and prosperity.

What do you think is the right thing to do about it?

The issue of Northern Ireland's sovereignty is complex and deeply rooted in the history, politics
and cultural identity of the region. What is "right" can vary depending on each individual's
perspective and the values they consider most important.

Some people advocate for the reunification of Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland,
arguing that this could promote peace and stability in the region by resolving historical divisions.
Others prefer Northern Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom, citing the cultural identity
and economic stability the union offers.

The most important thing is that any solution to this issue is peaceful and respects the rights and
wishes of all communities in Northern Ireland. Reconciliation and dialogue between nationalists
and unionists are essential to find a lasting solution that benefits all inhabitants of the region.

The municipality is named after the Aztec poet and ruler Nezahualcóyotl, who lived in the 15th
century in the Texcoco region, which is now part of the State of Mexico. Nezahualcóyotl is
remembered for his philosophical poems and for his contribution to the cultural development of
the region.

Nezahualcóyotl was initially developed as a housing complex for migrant workers who came to the
area in the 1950s in search of job opportunities in the growing Mexico City. Over time, it became a
major urban center with a diverse mix of population and a rich cultural life.

Throughout its history, Nezahualcóyotl has been the scene of significant social and cultural
movements. The community has fought for better living conditions, adequate public services and
development opportunities for all its inhabitants.

Among the famous people originating from or related to Nezahualcóyotl are:

1. José Agustín: Mexican writer recognized for his youth novels and his influence on
contemporary Mexican literature.
2. Carlos Olmos: Film director and screenwriter known for his films exploring urban life in
Mexico, many of which are set in Nezahualcóyotl.

These are just a few examples of the personalities who have emerged from Nezahualcóyotl and
who have left a mark on Mexican culture and beyond. The municipality continues to be a vibrant
and dynamic place, full of life and diversity.
