ECSS@26: ”Journeying Together as One in Faith, Hope, and Love”

Name: ____________________________________ Section: ________________________

Grade level: Grade 5 – 1st Quarter (Module 1)

Subject: Mathematics
Formation Standard: Responsible (Character Development)

- The learner will be able to show consistency in performing tasks systematically and
competently.

I. Established Goal:
The learner demonstrates understanding and appreciation of key concepts and skills
involving numbers and number sense as applied, using appropriate technology in critical
thinking, problem solving, reasoning, communicating, making connections, representations,
and decision in real life and learn values such as think well before answering.

II. Most Essential Learning Competencies:

The learner uses divisibility rules for numbers 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, and 10 to find common factors of
numbers.

III. Essential Understanding:

A number is divisible by another number when you divide the given number by the other
number and the quotient leaves a 0 remainder. Divisibility tests can be used to find factors
of large whole numbers quickly. Divisibility rules look at the different digits in a given
number. Depending on the digits or combination of digits, you can determine if a number is
divisible by let’s say 2, 3, or 5. This can help us to identify the factors of a number.

IV. Essential Questions:

1. How do you know that a number is divisible by another number?
2. Why is there a need for divisibility rules?

V. Content:
A. Introduction
Drill

The Math Department has 120 pens. If each teacher should have the same number of
pens, how many teachers could there be in the department? (Critical Thinking)

Try completing the statements below. The First one has been done for you.

1. If there are 120 teachers, every teacher gets 1 pen.

2. If there are 60 teachers, every teacher gets ___ pen.

3. If there are 40 teachers, every teachers gets ___ pen.

4. If there are 30 teachers, every teachers gets ___ pen.

5. If there are 24 teachers, every teachers gets ___ pen.

Let us observe how the answer above are attained.

Explain how you know that 120 can evenly divided by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10.
(Communication)

Divisibility rules can be used to easily divide large numbers.

120 is divisible by 2 because it is an even number. All even numbers are divisible by
2.

A number is divisible by 3 when the sum of its digits is divisible by 3.

It is easier to add the digits of a big number and check if the sum is divisible by 3 than
dividing the big number by 3. Now, try adding the digits of 120. 1+2+0=3. Is 3 divisible
by 3? YES

Any number that ends either in 5 or 0 is divisible by 5.

120 is divisible by 5 because it ends in 0.

Any number that is divisible by both 2 and 3 is also divisible by 6.

Since 120 is divisible by both 2 and 3, it follows that it is also divisible by 6.

If the sum of the digits of a number is divisible by 9, then the number is divisible
by 9.
The sum of the digits of 5 211 is 9. Therefore, 5 211 is divisible by 9.
Any number that ends in 0 is divisible by 10.
120 is divisible by 10 because it ends in 0.

B. Lesson:

A number is divisible by another number when you divide the given

number by the other number and the quotient leaves a 0 remainder.

“Divisible by” means when you divide one number by another, the
result is a whole number. “Divisible by” and “can be evenly divided by”
mean the same thing.

Divisibility tests can be used to find factors of large whole numbers

quickly.

Divisibility Rules for numbers 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, and 10.

A number is divisible by:

2 – If the number is even and if the last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6, 0r 8.

Example: Is the number 246 is divisible by 2?

Answer: Since the last digit of the number 246 ends in 6, that means it is
divisible by 2.

3 – If the sum of the digits of the number is divisible by 3.

Example: is the number 111 divisible by 3?

Answer: Let’s add the digits of the number 111. We have 1+1+1=3. Since
the sum of the digits is divisible by 3, therefore the number 111 is also
divisible by 3.

5 – If the number ends in either 5 or 0.

Example: Which number is divisible by 5?

a. 68 b. 71 c. 20 d. 44

Answer: In order for a number to be divisible by 5, the last digit of the

number must be either 0 or 5. Going over the choices, only the number 20 is
divisible by 5 so the answer is choice C.

6 – If the number is divisible by both 2 and 3.

Example: Is the number 4 608 divisible by 6?

Answer: a number is an even number so it is divisible by 2. Now check if it is

divisible by 3. Let’s do that by adding all the digits of
4 608 which is 4+6+0+8=18. Obviously, the sum of the digits is divisible by
3 because 18÷ 3=6. Since the number 4 608 is both divisible by 2 and 3 then
it is must also be divisible by 6. The answer is YES.

9 – If the sum of the digits of the number is divisible by 9.

Example: Is the number 1 764 divisible by 9?

Answer: For a number to be divisible by 9, the sum of its digits must also be
divisible by 9. For the number 1 764 we get 1+7+6+4=18. Since the sum of
the digits is 18 and is divisible by 9 therefore 1 764 must be divisible by 9.

10 – If the last digit of number is 0.

Example: The number 20, 40, 50, 170, and 990 are all divisible by 10
because their last digit is zero. On the other hand, 21, 34, 127, and 468 are
not divisible by 10 since they don’t end with zero.

Tests for divisibility are even easier than the usual factoring method.

For example, to find the common factors of 18 and 44. Thus, the factors of
18 and 44 are:

18: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 18

44: 1, 2, 4, 11, 22, 44

Therefore, the common factors of 18 and 44 are 1 and 2.

C. Integration:

As an ECSSian, it is important to know that the divisibility rules can be served as

your tool in dividing numbers easily. In real life situation, you may also set rules to
follow, to organize and do tasks accordingly.
D. Closure:

Divisibility rules look at the different digits in a given number. Depending on the
digits or combination of digits, you can determine if a number is divisible by for example
2, 3, or 5. This can help us to identify the factors of a number. Divisibility rules can be
used to easily divide large numbers. All even numbers are divisible by 2. A number is
divisible by 3 when the sum of its digits is divisible by 3. Any number that ends either in
5 or 0 is divisible by 5. Any number that is divisible by both 2 and 3 is also divisible by 6.
If the sum of the digits of a number is divisible by 9, then the number is divisible by 9.
Any number that ends in 0 is divisible by 10. A number is divisible by another number
when you divide the given number by the other number and the quotient leaves a zero
remainder.
Thank you Jesus for the divisibility rules.
Thank you Jesus I am organized.
