WHAT IS AN ECOSYSTEM
The ecosystem is the structural and function unit of
ecology where the living organisms interact with each
other and the surrounding environment.

An ecosystem is a chain of interactions between

organisms and their environment
COMPONENT OF THE ECOSYSTEM

BIOTIC ABIOTIC
BIOTIC
Biotic elements are LIVING things in an ecpsystem.
Examples: Plants and Animals
Biotic components in an ecosystem can be divided
into several types depending on how they get their
food:
1. Autotrophs or producers,
2. Heterotrophs or consumers,
3. Decomposers or decomposers.
AUTOTROPHS OR PRODUCERS
These organisms are all living things that are
able to make their own food.
These living things are plants, plants can produce
their own food because they have 2 things:
1. Chlorophyll
2. Can do photosynthesis process
HETEROTROPHS OR CONSUMERS
These are organisms that cannot make their own
food and depend on other organisms for their food.
That animals are:
1. Herbivore (the food sources is plants)
2. Carnivore (the food source is meat)
3. Omnivore (the food source is meat or plants)
DECOMPOSERS OR DECOMPOSERS.
Decomposers are organisms that
decompose dead living things.
Examples: fungi and bacteria
ABIOTIC
Abiotic elements are NON-LIVING things in
an ecosystem.
Abiotic elements influence what biotic
elements can survive in certain areas.
Example : sunlight, air, water, and rocs.

RELATIONSHIP IN ECOSYSTEM
PREDATION

MUTUALISM COMPETITION

PARASITISM
COMMENSALISM
Predation
Predation is when one organism eats
another organism to obtain nutrients.
The organism that is eaten is called the
prey. Examples of predation are owls
that eat mice, and lions that eat gazelles.
COMPETITION
Competition is when individuals or
populations compete for the same
resource, and can occur within or between
species.
COMMENSALISM
Commensalism is a relationship in
which one organism benefits while the
other is neither helped nor harmed.
Examples are barnacles that grow on
whales and other marine animals. The
whale gains no benefit from the
barnacle, but the barnacles gain
mobility, which helps them evade
predators, and are exposed to more
diverse feeding opportunities.
parasitism
Parasitism is a relationship in which
one organism benefits and the other
organism is harmed, but not always
killed. The organism that benefits is
called the parasite, and the one that is
harmed is the host.
Example : lice and human
mutualism
Mutualism is a relationship in which
both species benefit.
Example: bee and flower
