Offers and
Suggestion

Definition

Social Function Expression Examples

1
C. DESCRIPTION OF MATERIAL
In our daily basis we always have a conversation with our friends or with family. Sometimes
we ask the listeners what we have to do or maybe what you can do for them. We cannot avoid
it to share our ideas to help. In this chapter you are about to learn how to give an offer and ask
a suggestion.
First thing first, have you ever willingly given an offer to your friend or to the stranger? If it is
yes, what makes you want to do that? If it is no, what is the reason behind it?
According to Oxford dictionary, offer is to say that you are willing to give/do something to
somebody. The big question is why people want to do that. It is simple because we are social
beings. Who knows one day you are having problems or in difficult condition and someone
gives you an offer to help you that would be helpful and you would thankful for it. Another
reason is to facilitate interpersonal communication between different people. Offers can be
given in terms of food, money, solutions, friendship or a bargain. It can be taken or refused.
When making offers, we often use the following expressions;
1. May I . . .?
2. Can I . . .?
3. Shall I . . .?
4. Would you . . .?
5. How about I . . .?
Here are the examples of giving offers;
1. May I give you a hand?
2. Can I help you?
3. Shall I bring you some tea?
4. Would you like another piece of cake?
5. How about I call a grab?
Let’s take a look the table down below how we can accept or decline the offer.

2
Imagine that you haven’t seen a good friend in a month. In a telephone call, your friend tells
you she would like to get together for dinner but can’t think of a restaurant to go to. So, you
offer an idea.
Look at a short conversation:
A: I’d love to have dinner on Friday but I’m not sure where.
B: How about we go to Chez Philip?
A: Great idea! I haven’t been there in over a year.
The phrase How about is one common way to make a friendly suggestion in English. To make
a suggestion means to offer an idea or plan for someone to think about.
There are a number of expressions which we can use to make suggestions.
1. Let’s …
2. Why don’t …?
3. What about …?
4. We could …
5. How about …?
6. I suggest that …
7. I think …
Here are the examples of suggestions;
1. Let’s go to the library.
2. Why don’t we play frisbee outside?
3. What about eating at the new place?
4. We could cook dinner together.
5. How about going to the beach this weekend?
6. I suggest that we meet at the bus stop.
7. I think you should call your parents.

3
Here are other phrases you can use to accept or decline the suggestions;
Accepting
A few phrases for accepting a suggestion are:
That’s a good/great idea!
Yes, OK.
That sounds good/great.
Perfect!
Thanks! I’d love to.

Declining
A few phrases for declining a suggestion include:
I’d prefer…
That’s a good idea but…
I’m not sure.

C. DESCRIPTION OF MATERIAL
Have you ever received any invitation of an event or invited someone to the event you have?
Did you attend to the event? Did everyone join to your event?
According to the Oxford dictionary, invitation is a spoken or written request to somebody to
do something or to go somewhere. An invitation could be spoken or written. The invitation
could be divided into two types, formal and informal invitation. Whilst you get an invitation,
you may accept it or decline it. In this chapter, we will learn how to invite someone by spoken
or written to formal and social event.
Formal invitation
Formal invitation is usually issued by formal agency or company. Some of the invitations put
RSVP on them that means you have to respond the invitation whether you would like to go or
not by giving a call or an email to respond. In the formal invitation you need to use simple,
precise, and concise words. Detailed information is needed, so people who are invited know
where, when, and who about the event itself. Also, the words should be chosen carefully since
this is a formal invitation.
Let’s take a look the format of layout down below.

Here is the example of Wedding invitation;

Subject: Meeting Invitation
Attachment: 2 pieces

All the students Guardian

As this letter comes, we extend the invitation to all the students’ guardian to attend the meeting
for the farewell of the 3rd-grade students.

We will hold the meeting at the school at 09.00 am on Saturday, April 6th, 2019. We hope all
the parents or the guardian of the 3rd-grade students can come to attend the meeting. We will
focus on the date of the farewell ceremony, what will in the ceremony and the way to prevent
the students’ anarchy during the ceremony and the celebration.

Thank you for your attention.

Your Sincerely,

Boedi Djatmoko
School Principal

Informal invitation
An informal invitation or non-formal invite can take on many different forms and it does not
require all the pomp and ceremony of a formal invitation. The important thing to include in
non-formal invitations is:
· The sender or event organizer.
· The informal invitation can be written in handwriting
· You can use a warmer, more personal tone.
· The reason for which the event is being held. You can write these using a direct and
personal style.
· RSVP for the event. Put your e-mail or phone. Another original way to confirm attendance
and one which will help you manage the guests at the event is by using a Doodle.
· Another way to send a non-formal invitation is through a Facebook event.
You can be much more creative with informal invitations, so come up and think of some
original ideas that can make your event more attractive to your possible attendees.

11
Here are the examples of informal invitation;
Example 1 (Birthday Party):

C. DESCRIPTION OF MATERIAL
Have you ever written or received a letter to or from someone? Before the advent of modern
technology made communication so easy, the art of writing a letter was considered an
important requirement. Even today a letter is an important means of communication in both
the workspace as well as our personal lives. So, let us educate ourselves with the nuances of
letter writing. Nowadays, writing a letter is uncommon like used to. Technology plays
important role why people are not writing a letter. Since we can text or chat via online, it is
easier than we have to write a letter.
A letter is a written message that can be handwritten or printed on paper. It is usually sent to
the recipient via mail or post in an envelope, although this is not a requirement as such. Any
such message that is transferred via post is a letter, a written conversation between two parties.
Now that E-mails and texts and other such forms have become the norm for communication,
the art of letter writing has taken a backseat. However, even today a lot of our communication,
especially the formal kind, is done via letters. Whether it is a cover letter for a job, or the bank
sending you a reminder or a college acceptance letter, letters are still an important mode of
communication. Which is why it is important that we know the intricacies of letter writing.
Types of Letters
Let us first understand that there are broadly two types of letter, namely Formal Letters, and
Informal Letters. But then there are also a few types of letters based on their contents,
formalities, the purpose of letter writing etc. Let us have a look at the few types of letters.
• Formal Letter: These letters follow a certain pattern and formality. They are strictly
kept professional in nature, and directly address the issues concerned. Any type of
business letter or letter to authorities falls within this given category.
• Informal Letter: These are personal letters. They need not follow any set pattern or
adhere to any formalities. They contain personal information or are a written
conversation. Informal letters are generally written to friends, acquaintances, relatives
etc.
• Business Letter: This letter is written among business correspondents, generally
contains commercial information such as quotations, orders, complaints, claims, letters
for collections etc. Such letters are always strictly formal and follow a structure and
pattern of formalities.
• Official Letter: This type of letter is written to inform offices, branches, subordinates
of official information. It usually relays official information like rules, regulations,
procedures, events, or any other such information. Official letters are also formal in
nature and follow certain structure and decorum.
• Social Letter: A personal letter written on the occasion of a special event is known as
a social letter. Congratulatory letter, condolence letter, invitation letter etc are all social
letters.
• Circular Letter: A letter that announces information to a large number of people is a
circular letter. The same letter is circulated to a large group of people to correspond

14
some important information like a change of address, change in management, the
retirement of a partner etc.
• Employment Letters: Any letters with respect to the employment process, like joining
letter, promotion letter, application letter etc.
Since we are about to focus on informal letter which is personal letter, the structure of the letter
is as not complicated as formal letter. So, here is the structure of personal letter;
• Date: Usually the date is written at the top left. It indicates when the letter was written.
• Address: This section is the place where you write the letter or the address where the
sender lives. The address is written at the top right.
• Salutation & Name: This section writes the greeting and the recipient's name. For
examples; "Dear ...", "Dearest ...", "Sweetheart", "Darling", "My love" and others.
• Introduction (Opening): The opening of a letter usually begins with an opening like
the response to a previous letter or it could be an initial introduction if you are just
starting out in correspondence.
• Body (contents of the letter): This section is the content or essence of the letter. In this
section of the Body, you tell all the contents of the letter that we want to tell.
• Closure (Closing): This section indicates that the letter will end soon.
• Complimentary close (closing greetings): This section is a short closing phrase such
as, "With love", "Sincerely yours", "With love", and so on.
• Signature (Signature): This section is under the complimentary close, you can put a
signature or it could be just the initials of your name.

Cause and Effect

Description

Function Structure Example

B. DESCRIPTION OF MATERIALS
Cause and effect are a relationship between events or things, where one is the result of the other
or others. This is a combination of action and reaction. You have ever wondered why this
‘situation’ is happened to you or every one else. There is nothing wrong about it because maybe
there is a cause of it. We will learn about cause and effect in this chapter.
Cause and effect are usually used in daily conversation or even in a text that is applicable when
we write an essay. The using of cause and effect describes why the situation happens. The
function of cause and effect is to talk about the way in which one thing is caused by another.

When we use cause and effect, we need to use the right structure. Here is the structure of cause
and effect;
1. Signal word/phrase + cause, effect.
2. Effect + signal word/phrase + cause
Let’s take a look of the signal word down below;

21
Here are the examples;
The Examples that followed by noun/noun phrase:
1. Due to the hot weather, we stayed at home all day.
Due to: connector/signal phrase
The hot weather: cause (the hot weather is noun phrase)
We stay at home all day: effect
2. I didn’t go to school due to the heavy rain.
3. Karina got a reward because of her hard work.
4. As a result of this pandemic, students are required to study at home.

The examples that followed by subject + verb or verb phrase:

1. We stayed at home all day because the weather was hot.
We stayed at home all day: effect
Because: connector/signal word
The weather was hot: cause (was is auxiliary verb)
2. I couldn’t sleep because my brother watched football matches all night.
3. I don’t go to the library since it is Sunday
4. As Tio took the wrong bus, he will come home late.

D. SUMMARY

Cause and effect are usually used in daily conversation or even in a text that is applicable
when we write an essay. The using of cause and effect describes why the situation happens.
The function of cause and effect is to talk about the way in which one thing is caused by
another. So, you have to know which one as an effect and which one as a cause. If you can
differentiate them, it will be easy for you to make a sentence or write an essay.
