Introductory Message
Welcome to TLE 9 – AFA (Animal Production-Swine)!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Negros Occidental and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed
to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in acquiring
the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The TLE 9 – AFA (Animal Production-Swine) Activity Sheet will help you
facilitate the teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the
independent learning.

For the learner:

The TLE 9 – AFA (Animal Production-Swine) Activity Sheet is developed to

help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides
you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active
learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and
answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed
schedule.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS FOR AGRICULTURAL WASTE COLLECTION

I. Learning Competency
1 Prepare tools and materials for collection of farm waste TLE_AFAAPS9-12PRW-IIc-d-9
1.1 Identify tools and materials for collection of farm waste
1.2 Understand the importance of tools and materials for collection of farm waste

II. Background of information

Livestock waste is a potential source of surface and groundwater contamination.
Modern livestock production, confining herds in smaller spaces, has increased problems
associated with disposing and making use of manure. Properly handled and used,
manure may be an asset; otherwise, it is a liability.
Collecting, storing, hauling and applying manure to fields needs tools and materials to
make it less laborious and efficient for workers.
How is agricultural waste disposed of?
Disposal of agricultural waste, is, in many cases similar to regular waste disposal
methods. As in, solid materials are often sent to landfills or incinerators. However, this
can obviously have a negative effect on the planet – something which those who work
within agriculture are likely to be particularly passionate about. In fact, the future of
farming relies on taking care of the planet. Fortunately, there are other methods of
agricultural waste disposal, such as composting and recycling which can be
implemented to help protect the environment.
For example, organic fertilizers can be used again and again, and animal waste
(faeces) can be used in composting. Both of which will allow agricultural land to thrive.

Why is agricultural waste a problem?

Waste is always a problem, and we each have a responsibility to ensure that we
both minimize waste and find a way to ensure we properly dispose of any waste we do
produce.
Agricultural waste poses a huge problem if not properly disposed of, as
agricultural waste can have a distinctly negative impact on the environment. In addition

4
to the dangers of landfills and incineration, the chemicals used in farming and
agriculture can cause pollution if they end up in the wrong places. Polluted water
damages the eco-system and can lead to the death of animals and can also damage
drinking water.

How do agricultural wastes harm the environment?

Agricultural wastes impact the environment as they continue to add to the
pollution of the planet. In addition to the potential dangers of chemicals/pesticides, other
agricultural waste can lead to environmental harm. For example, animal agriculture can
also release harmful pollutants.

How do farmers get rid of waste?

There are numerous ways in which farmers can dispose of agricultural waste. In
addition to organizing regular waste collection (of both traditional and recyclable
materials), many farmers chose to find ways of disposing of their waste themselves.

Manure Handling
How you get the manure out of the pens, out of the buildings, and onto the fields
must be thoroughly planned.
When handling manure, be considerate of your neighbors and be sure your
practices comply with local, national, and barangay guidelines and regulations.

Tools used for Agricultural Waste Collection

 Shovel- used for scooping up waste materials.

 Spade- It is designed for the specific task of lifting up

and removing dirt.

5
 Wheelbarrow- used to transfer heavy waste
materials such as solid manure.

 Rake- an implement consisting of a toothed bar fixed

transversely to a handle, or tines fixed to a handle,
and designed to be to tackle a variety of cleaning of
jobs.

 Spading Fork- used for cleaning and turning over

compost.

 Hose- used to convey or carry water to minimize the

labor of fetching water from the water source.

6
 Brushes- one of the most basic and versatile tool
used for cleaning floor surfaces.

 Pitchfork- used for manure handling and cleaning.

 Dustpan- commonly used in combination with a

broom or long brush for sweepings.

 Hard Broom- used for rougher tasks like sweeping

dirt off concrete floors.

7
 Power Sprayer - is a device used to spray a liquid,
sprayers are commonly used for projection of water.
