Instructions to Candidates
From the three sections of this Practical examination paper, you are to do only one
number picked from one section of your choice. You will have a minimum of 30 minutes
to plan and prepare for your work.

You must demonstrate in both your preparatory work and your final output that you
have;
i) Recorded your experiences and observations
ii) Researched and explored your ideas
iii) Used suitable materials and techniques
iv) Selected your preparatory studies and developed them into your final outputs

Any medium except oil paint may be used.

The tasks for your choice are arranged into three sections:
Section 1: Stimuli
Section 2: Observational
Section 3: Design briefs

SECTION 1. STIMULI

Using a suitable medium, produce a SINGLE expressive artwork, based upon ONE of
the following themes:
1. People in need of essential commodities would wait for a day when a communal
market is held to access a variety of cheaper products. On such a day, a lot of
activities are usually conducted. Make a depiction of that event.
2. At home, it is a good practice to have meals together as a family. Depending on
your cultural set up, depict such a scenario in a setting of your choice.
3. Illusion of depth in a school landscape

SECTION 2. DESIGN BRIEFS

4. A gallery is planning an exhibition of artefacts and garments based on recycled items.
Produce an artwork to advertise the event, with your chosen date and venue.
5. Uganda Railways Corporation wants to rebrand its image to the public. Make your
design proposal to be used by the company. Make use of space and colour of
your choice.
6. A fashion company is looking for design motifs based on fungi. Design a motif
suitable for the company’s requirements.

i) This painting depicts people in a crowded local setting (market) selling
foodstuffs and fruits.
ii) The composition consists of children, men and women depicted in various
postures such as standing, bending and sitting.
iii) People are depicted with simplified forms.
iv) Fruits are depicted with simplified patterns that describe their texture,
such as the pineapples.

v) The composition was handled with brown and blues against a yellow
ochre background.
vi) The shapes are defined with bold lines.
vii) However, there are many figures whose heads are cut off within the
composition.
viii) The composition appears congested within no breathing space.
ix) It is not easy to identify the focus of this painting since almost all
human figures were depicted in the same sizes and colour intensity.

18. (i) Applique is a technique of fabric decoration where pieces of a material are
fixed on a background material by either stitching or gluing, following a given
composition or pattern.
(ii) Patchwork refers to needlework in which different pieces of cloth in different
shapes, designs and colours are sawn together to form a decorative cloth.

Answer:
i) This is a sculpture of Moses by Michelangelo.
ii) It was carved from marble.
iii) It appears placed in a nitch of a building.
iv) The sculpture depicts Moses in a mood of a deep thought.
v) A realistic approach was followed while handling the sculpture.
vi) Moses was treated with an elderly appearance evidenced by a long beard.
vii) Drapery was treated with respect of the body underneath.
viii) The body forms were rendered to detail, for example veins and muscles on
hands and legs.

20. Answer:
i) Ancient Greeks painted using geometric shapes (Geometric style)

ii) This was followed by a combination of geometric shapes and abstract human
figures.
iii) Then more dramatic composition was painted on pottery surfaces.
iv) Compositions were developed from the Greek mythology; these were
composed of more than one object.
v) Perspective was followed with foreshortening.
vi) Greeks started by painting figures; this was followed by red figures, then other
colours were introduced such as purple and white.
vii) The composition sizes were proportionately handled according to the size of
the vases.
viii) Lines were greatly used in the compositions to depict different shapes.
ix) There was a study of drapery in some compositions.
