24 hour urine specimen collection

WHY DO I NEED TO DISCARD THE FIRST VOIDED?

To obtain an accurately timed specimen, it is necessary to begin and end the collection period with an
empty bladder.

WHAT TIME WILL I START COLLECTING MY URINE?

The 24-hour collection may start at any time during the day after your first urinate. (usually in the
morning.)

CAN I DIRECTLY PEE/VOID INTO THE COLLECTION BOTTLE?

Yes, a man can pee directly to the collection bottle. While in women sometimes they will receive a
special supporting device a commode to help them with their urine collection. All the urine in the
commode should be transfer to the collection bottle.

WHERE CAN I PUT IN MY COLLECTION BOTTLES?

Collection bottles can be stored in the refrigerator away from food items, never allow the urine to
freeze. (store it at cool temperature)

WHAT IF I FILLED UP ALREADY THE COLLECTION BOTTLE PRIOR TO 24 HOUR TIME?

You can collect the rest of your urine in a clean glass or a plastic container.

WHAT WILL I DO IF I MISSED EVEN JUST A SINGLE VOID?

If you miss a collection, please return to the lab for a new container, as the collection process will
need to begin again.

WHAT TIME WILL I END MY COLLECTION?

You will end your urine collection the next day, same time when you started your collection.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF A 24-HOUR URINE COLLECTION?

Certain factors may affect the accuracy of a 24-hour urine collection. These include:
 Forgetting to collect some of your urine

 Going beyond the 24-hour collection period and collecting too much urine

 Losing urine from the specimen container through spilling

 Not keeping urine cold while collecting it

 Acute stress

 Vigorous exercise

 Certain foods, such as coffee, tea, cocoa, bananas, citrus fruits, and vanilla

WHY MIGHT I NEED A 24-HOUR URINE COLLECTION?

A 24-hour urine collection helps diagnose kidney problems. It is often done to see how much
creatinine clears through the kidneys. It’s also done to measure protein, hormones, minerals, and
other chemical compounds.

A 24-hour urine collection is a simple lab test that measures what’s in your urine. The test is used to
check kidney function.

DAGDAG KAALAMAN, KUNG GUSTO MO LAMANG

Urine is made up of water and dissolved chemicals, such as sodium and potassium. It also
contains urea. This is made when protein breaks down. And it contains creatinine, which is
formed from muscle breakdown.
 Do not let feces (poop) mix with the urine or else the test will need to be restarted.
 Take the urine to a Laboratory (Lab) Service Center as soon as possible, within 24 hours after
ending the collection. Keep the urine cool.
 You will need to start the test over if any of the urine spilled, you forgot to save some or it has poop
in it.

The 24-hour collection container may contain chemicals (as a preservative) that are hazardous. DO
NOT urinate directly into the container. Collect urine in a clean, dry vessel and carefully pour the urine
into the 24-hour collection container. Assume that all preservatives are hazardous (most are).

 The importance of such preservatives is stressed when collecting a 24-hour urine sample to
minimize the degradation associated with variable handling and storage conditions.
 The commonly used urine preservatives include
 boric acid,
 hydrochloric acid,
 acetic acid, and
 oxalic acid.
