Introduction to IoT
•Definition of IoT: The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the network of interconnected devices that
communicate and exchange data over the internet.

•Relevance in Electrical Engineering: IoT revolutionizes electrical systems by enabling real-time

monitoring, automation, and efficient energy management
IoT enabled Devices and Sensors
•Sensors:
• A sensor is a device that detects the change in the
environment and responds to some output on the
other system.
• Collect data (e.g., voltage, current, temperature).
• Examples: Temperature sensors(Thermocouples),
current sensors.
•Actuators:
• An actuator is a device that converts energy, which
may be electric, hydraulic, pneumatic, etc., to
mechanical in such a way that it can be controlled
• Control physical processes (e.g., switches, relays).
• Enable automation and remote operation.
Communication Protocols for IoT
• Wi-Fi(Wireless Fidelity):
• High bandwidth, short range. 640 × 416

• Suitable for home automation.

• Bluetooth:
• Low power, short range.
• Common in wearable devices.
• Zigbee:
• Low power, mesh network.
• Used in smart homes.
• LoRaWAN(Long Range Wide Area Network):
• Long-Range, low power.
• Ideal for outdoor applications.
Application of IoT in Electrical System
•Smart Grid Management:
• Optimize power distribution.
• Balance load across the grid.

•Energy Monitoring and Optimization:

• Smart meters track consumption.
• Demand-side management reduces wastage.

•Condition-Based Maintenance:
• Predictive maintenance using IoT data.
• Extend equipment lifespan.

How Smart Meters works
Electricity Measurement:
• Smart meters
measure voltage and current flowing
through electrical circuits.
• These values are multiplied to
calculate power consumption (measured in
watts).
• By integrating power consumption over time,
the meter determines total electricity
use (measured in kilowatt-hours).
Benefits of a Smart Grid
• Efficiency
a) Distributed Generation
b) Smart Metering
c) Energy Management System

• Reliability
a) Wide Area Network

• Environment
a) Renewable Generation
b) Reduce Demand on Centralized Generation Facilities
Current Implementation in India

The “National Smart Grid Mission” was approved by Ministry

of Power on 27 March 2015.
Currently if has allocated 14 Smart Grid Pilot projects across
India.
Some important places
• Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company (CESC)
• IIT Kanpur
• Assam Power Distribution Company Limited
Challenges and Security Considerations
•Data Privacy and Encryption:
• Protect sensitive information.
• Secure communication channels.
•Scalability:
• Handle large-scale IoT deployments.
• Efficiently manage data flow.
•Cybersecurity Threats:
• Guard against unauthorized access.
• Regular security updates.
Case Studies and Real-Life Examples
• Present case studies showcasing successful IoT
implementations:
•Smart Meters: How they revolutionized energy
monitoring and billing accuracy.
•Smart Cities: Urban infrastructure management
using IoT (traffic lights, waste management,
environmental monitoring).
•Industrial Automation: Factories and power
plants leveraging IoT for efficiency and safety.
Conclusion
The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a revolutionary technology, transforming
various aspects of modern living. In the context of electrical engineering, IoT plays a
pivotal role in shaping the future.
