CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the study

Internship is an opportunity to integrate career related experience in to an
undergraduate education by practical in planned and supervised work. Internship
can also be described as a period of apprenticeship, where students work off
campus under the supervision of a factory, hospital business or government
agency. During this period, students put in practice to theory in what they have
learned in class and to gain experience to those looking forward to gain the
relevant knowledge and skills required to enter in to a career. Internship is
relatively short term in nature and primarily focuses on giving someone practical
knowledge on the job training, and taking the theory learnt in the classroom and
applying to real world. Interns normally have their supervisors, who assigns
specific tasks to them and the end evaluate their overall performance. Internship
enhances professionalism it is based on practical orientation and real world
experience. Unlike the traditional vocation training program, internships are not
only designed to expose students to gain knowledge just for academic work, but
also to gain experience in to the job market, as well as making student see the
relevance of academic skills. Internship is not jobs but learning experience.
Students usually work in different departments, learning the range of jobs and
careers within the company.

The intern formulated several learning goals which were;

 To know how conception is being paned in project management

 To know how feasibility studies is being carried out.

 To know how a project is being executed and how the project performance is

Importance of Internship

 It provides real life experience and exposure: an internship enables the intern to
gain first hand exposure in working in real world.’ It also allows students to

exchange of information between people with the ultimate goal of establishing
acquaintance and relationship to advance professional career. Internship allows

are that which shape us. The intern will not only experience personal
development but also greater understanding of you to know yourself is to know
your goal and how to achieve them.
 During internship the intern has the opportunity to excel and possibly pick a job
with the company.

1.2 Aims and objectives of the internship

in the field.

qualification in career work related training and reference that would enhance
employability after the interns studies.

in Cameroon.

organization.

3
any organization.

during her training in G&J co.ltd drawn up by the intern and her field supervisor

During my one month stay at George and Jerry co.ltd, Intern had the opportunity to
work in almost all the departments found at the organization, which on my report
activity was divided in to depart.

 Activities carried out at the Risk Department

Since the organization was dealing with field work, they were liable to risk, so
in the risk management department, medical checks were done on the health
and safety of employees in the organization. Intern was shown the various exits
to take in case of fire and where intern is supposed to stand when such occur so

17
as for a role call to be conducted to know if everyone has evacuated the
building.
 Activities carried out at the Human Resource Manager.
At the H.R office, the intern was able to learn a lot from this department since
the intern got the chance to be working with her internship supervisor who was
the H.R Manager of the company. At the Human Resource Department, intern
was shown on how materials are being managed in the company and as well
their employees and the various salary categories of workers. Intern was given
employees information to create tax payers account for each employee in the
company. The intern was shown how various employees’ issues were being
resolved by the Human Resource Manager and the procedures for out station
work for a worker needed at a construction site. Also, the intern was asked to
prepare job advert for the company and this helped intern to know the
procedure when a company has a job vacancy and what a job advert contains.

 Activities carried out at the Secretariat Office

In every big organization a secretary is needed to draft out schedules of high
management workers of an organization, type down minutes of every meeting
they hold, welcome customers who come in to the company and many more. At
the secretariat office, intern was thought how to photocopy and print documents
using the photocopier machine and how to print on the different sheet, A4 paper
and A3 paper. Intern was also taught how to register mails that enters and
leaves the company in two ledgers that is, one for incoming mails that enter the
company and the other for mails that leave the organization. Intern was taught
some basic computer graphic design.

18
 Activities carried out at the Accounting Department
At the accounting department, intern was taught on how to enter company end
of year transactions using the sage accounting soft ware application, intern also
had much to enter given that the company had a lot of dealings and needed to
enter each transaction in the right format, using sage accounting soft ware.

3.2 Focus Area: Stakeholder’s Management

During this one-month training program, intern had in mind as her focus to know
the role of a stakeholders and the importance of stakeholder’s management in an
organization.

In every organization there must be stakeholder who has an interest in the

business. This interest can either be positive or a negative interest.

Stakeholder: A stakeholder is anybody or groups who are positively or negatively

impacted by a project, initiative, policy or organization. They could be internal or
external. As the student focus area during this one month program she intended
knowing what stakeholder management is and how it will affect an organization.
Stakeholders are employees, investors, shareholders of a project while the external
stakeholders are the government, suppliers, clients, hospitals, insurance company
etc. The stakeholder management process includes,

Stakeholder Management: stakeholder management includes the processes

required to identify the people, group, or organization that could impact or be
impacted by the project. To analyze stakeholder expectations and their impact of
the project and to develop appropriate management strategies for effectively
engaging stakeholders in project decision and executions.

 Stakeholder management processes.

 Identify stakeholder.

Intern during her one month training was asked to identify the variouse
stakeholder involved in the institution she studies in (HIMS).

 Positive Stakeholders
Students: they are said to be positive stakeholders of the institution because
they add to the finances of the school by paying their fees
Teachers: the teachers impact the students with knowledge which they on
their part acquire good knowledge and keep the name of the school running
Taxi drivers: they help in caring both teachers and students to school which
they receive a pay for.
School cleaners: they keep the campus clean making the surrounding pleasant
and comfortable for students and there by receiving a salary for their services.
Parents: they are also part of the stakeholder in an institution because they
have an interest that is by sending their children to this institution to go acquire
knowledge.

21
Bookshop owners: they provide the school and students with text books
needed for studies and as well gain income from the sales of these books.

 Negative Stakeholders
Competitors (CUIB, HIMAT, and RIMZ): they play a negative role in that
they provide the same services which HIMS provides making it a threat to the
institution.
Government: they government impulse taxes to be paid by the institution thus
reducing their finances use in running the school.
Intern during this training was giving an assignment by her field supervisor to
show the various steps in stakeholder identification in a project

Stakeholder identification

This process is all about identifying who are the stakeholders in a project and
differentiating the internal and external stakeholders.

Analyse stakeholder engagement

This has to do with knowing their interest, influence and expectations of the
stakeholders from the project.

Plan stakeholder engagement

This process deals with making a plan on how these stakeholders needs,
expectations and needs will be achieve at the end of the project.

Manage stakeholder engagement

The managing process is to ensure that these needs, interest and expectation are
attained at the end of the project.

22
Monitor stakeholder engagement

This is the last stage of stakeholder management and this is all about ensuring that
the processes are being done and monitored.

Stakeholder engagement can be effectively done through proper communication.

Communication management is a process of ensuring that information about a
project reaches all its stakeholders through the appropriate channels for
transferring information.
Communication management process includes;

 Identify who to communicate with

 Figure out who deserve which information in a project
 Determine the method of communication to be used for transferring the
information.

3.3: Comparison between Theory and Practice

3.3.1 Similarities

 In theory, it was taught that face to face survey is more flexible than any other
method of data collection. It was the same method used to carry out data
collection in projects.
 In class, it was taught that one of the ways to increase customer’s loyalty was to
provide them with good quality work and at affordable prices. This was the
practical in George and Jerry where their services were highly demanded due to
their good quality outcomes they offered their clients.

3.3.2 Differences

Following the one month training program which intern carried out in G&J, intern
found out theory is quite different from practical. This is so because what intern
23
was taught in class intern wasn’t able to implement. There were situation in which
intern fine difficulties in allocating resources to the right departments when intern
was being asked by my internship supervisor.
In theory you only get to learn on paper without actually implementing all
what you learn in to practice. It can also be said that with only theory without
practical’s one won’t have the skills to work in any organization. So working with
one without the other won’t give you a high chance to be an expert in to the job
market.

In class, it was taught that one of the ways to increase customer’s loyalty was
to provide them with good quality work and at affordable prices. This was the
practical in George and Jerry where their services were highly demanded due to
their good quality outcomes they offered their clients.

24
CHAPTER FOUR

EVALUATION OF THE INTERNSHIP

4.1Strengths and Weaknesses of the Organisation

G&J co.ltd has always stood to be one of the top leading construction companies in
the South West Region and also in other regions of the country. The organization
derive its strength from the following as seen bellow

 George and Jerry Co. LTD is a renounced construction company in Cameroon

especially in the English speaking regions in Cameroon and this gives the
Company strength against it competitors.
 The employees in George and Jerry are efficient with their job and this helps
to reduce expenses and it improves profits. The company has carried out so
many projects some being the rehabilitation project of the Buea Regional
hospital, installation of electric poles in the Molyko Buea, and many more
others not mention. This is strength to the company because it helps them
acquire more project proposals from the Government.
 George and Jerry Co. LTD are in partnership with SATOM Cameroon and
this partnership agreement is a great strength to the company as they are not
only into construction alone. The partnership with this other company help
the quickly realize their project. SATOM provides the company with
building materials when they don’t have enough finances. This gives a
stronger strength to the company.
 Weakness of the Organization

The organization does not have a project management department to handle the
planning, scheduling, controlling, budgeting and monitoring of the Company’s

25
project so as to avoid extra cost or waste of resources. This makes it a
weakness for the organization because a construction project manager and
department are essential for every construction company for it to run smoothly
and effectively.

 ORGANISATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Organizational opportunities represent the power points of the company

which can benefit employees and company; this also consists of the
opportunities of the company which keeps the external environment satisfied.
Some of these include: George and Jerry co.ltd ensures that the workers
become financially independent and can appropriately survive from the
salaries they earn, and partnering with a bank which salaries are being paid
in to, and there by obtaining loans at a lower interest rate. This therefore
reduces the chances of staffs having unsafe borrows illicit transactions,
sales of property, stealing and others.

The company also has sub branch offices around the country, thereby
making them having a greater dominance in the building construction
company, and can still survive efficiently even if one goes down. The
organization has shares in various banks.

These shares can sustain the organization even in case of bankruptcy.

The organization with its expansion plans, products and services, provides
them with distinctive competences, competitive advantage through its
competitive strategies.

The organization has a way to indemnity a deceased member’s family

through the risk management insurance scheme. Opportunity to reach highly

26
productive and secured forums with its many services and help it gives its
affiliates.

 ORGANISATIONAL THREATS

There is a threat to the company in respect of competitors such CHARIOT

construction company. The emergence of many construction companies today is a
threat to the company operations as they will have to Share the market and
everything in it. The rate of investment today has increased; consequently, they
are many building construction companies, thus creation of constant threat to the
