HISTORY OF BASKETBALL
 The history of basketball with its invention in
1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts by
Canadian physical education instructor James
Naismith as a less injury-prone sport than
football.
 The game became established fairly quickly
and grew very popular as the 20 century
th

progressed, first in America and then in other

parts of the world.
 After basketball became established in
American colleges, the professional game
followed.
 The American National Basketball Association
(NBA), established in 1946, grew to
multibillion-dollar enterprise by the end of the
century, and basketball became an integral
part of American culture.
INVENTION OF THE GAME
 The invention of the game as it is known
today was created by Dr. James Naismith to
condition the young athletes during the cold
months. Naismith was a physical education
instructor at the YMCA International Training
School in Springfield, Massachusetts.
 It consisted of peach baskets and soccer style
ball. He published 13 rules for the new game.
He divided his class of 18 into two teams of
nine players of each and set about to teach
them the basics of the new game.
 The objective of the game was to throw the
basketball into fruit baskets nailed to the lower
railing of the gym balcony. Every time a point
was scored, the game was halted so that the
janitor could bring out the ladder and retrieve
the ball.
 The first public basketball game was played in
Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 11, 1892.
RULES
Naismith’s original 13 rules were:

1) The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or

both hands.
2) The ball may be battled in any direction with one or
both hands.
3) A player cannot run with the ball, the player must
throw it from the spot on which he catches it.
4) The ball must be held in or between the hands, the
arms or body must not be used for holding it.
5) No shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping or striking
in any way the person of an opponent shall be
allowed.
6) A foul is striking the ball with the fist, violation of
rules 3 and 4, and such as described in rule 5.
7) If either side makes three consecutive fouls it shall
count a goal for the opponents.
8) A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or
batted from grounds into the basket and stays there.
9) When the ball goes out of the bounds it shall be
thrown into the field and played by the person first
touching it.
10) The umpire shall be the judge of the men and
shall note the fouls, and notify the referee when
three consecutive fouls have been made.
11) The referee shall be the judge of the ball and
shall decide when the ball is in play, in-bounds, and
to which side it belongs, and shall keep the time.
12) The time shall be fifteen minutes halves, with
five minutes rests between.
13) The side making the most goals in that time,
shall be declared the winner. In case of draw, the
game may, be the agreement of the captains, be
continued until the other goal is made.
FIELD AND MEASUREMENTS

and the half court line.

Indoor courts are usually made with polished wood(often

maple), while outdoor courts are typically made from
paving, concrete, or asphalt.

Fundamental Skills
Learning how to play basketball is to learn its
fundamentals. Here are those:

1) Dribbling: It is important for penetrating to the hoop,

moving the ball across the court, getting away from
the defence, and finding a good passing lane. There
are different types of dribbling:
a) Change-of-pace
b) Crossover dribble
c) Behind the back
d) Pull back dribble
e) Low dribble
f) Basic dribble
g) Between the legs dribble
2) Passing: A good offensive attack requires good
passing from players. This helps find an open man,
to find a good shooter or to get away from a
defender. There are several types of passes:
a) Overhead pass
b) Chest pass
c) Push pass
d) Baseball pass
e) Off-the-dribble pass
f) Bounce pass
3) Shooting: The object of the game is to win by
earning more points. Therefore, improving the team’s

several ways to score in the game:
a) Jump shot
b) Dunk
c) Alley loop
d) Free throw
e) Layup
f) Three-point-shot
g) Hook shot
4) Rebounding: It is essential to gain or regain
possession after the shot. Usually, the team who
has most number of rebounds after the game has
more shot attempts and chances to score.
5) Offense: It is the only chance that the team has the
shot at the basket and scoring. Playing a good
offense requires coordination among players and
individual skills to execute well plays.
6) Defence: To be able to get a chance to score and
gain possession, the team should play good defence
and try to stop their opponent from scoring. As
said,” A good defence is a good offence.”
7) Moves: There are different kinds of moves that are
important in executing both a good offense and a
good defence. Moves are helpful in finding an open
man, make a good shot or create an amazing play.
8) Violations: Knowing the kinds of basketball violations
improves your game.
9) Assist: It is given to a teammate to help him score
easily. Thus, it is important to find an open man on
the court.
