enclosed certificates and shown on the nameplate of the hooks.
All necessary service and maintenance shall be carried out by authorized service engineers at annually
and 5 year controls.
Weekly and monthly controls by the crew are limited to visual check and practical operation in connection
with rescue boat drills. No lubrication is needed but the release gear should be kept as clean as possible
at all time.
Any visible damage and/or malfunction occurs shall be immediately reported to VIKING. VIKING will
then provide an authorized service engineer at the first opportunity. In the meantime, the lifeboat must
not be used or serviced by the crew or any unauthorized personnel.
Any unauthorized repair, service and/or parts used in the rescue boat release gear will violate not only
the VIKING warranty but also the validity of the lifeboat and release hook certificates, and is therefore
illegal.

Operation & Maintenance Manual — —
For VIKING Norsafe TOR MK2 & TOR MK2-S lifeboat release hook system
The releasing operation of the hooks is conducted at the release handle near the steering console
through the control cables terminating at the fore and aft hooks. The interlock system including the
hydrostatic interlock unit is provided to prevent the release of the hooks when the boat is not waterborne.
The system also has an on-load release function which makes it possible to override the interlock in the
hydrostatic unit. Incorrect on-load release operation may cause fatalities and due precautions should be
taken for this operation.

Release handle
3.4.3. Operation
Operation of the release handle should only be allowed when the lifeboat is fully waterborne. The lifeboat
can be released by removing the safety pin and then pulling the release handle fully and quickly to the
open position (off-load release).

In a situation where off-load release is not possible, the lifeboat can also be released by operation of
the release handle even though the lifeboat is not fully waterborne. Break the transparent cover over
the lifeboat position indicator and force the lifeboat symbol down.
This overrides the interlock function of the hydrostatic interlock unit (on-load release) and it is possible
to pull the release handle and release the hooks.
3.5.2. Operation
When the lifeboat is fully waterborne, seawater enters into the hydrostat through a bulkhead opening.
The interlock cable and the piston are pushed up by the water pressure below the membrane, unlocking
the system and allowing the release handle to be operated. This is confirmed by observing the position
indicator on release handle unit. Contrary to this, operation of the release handle is not allowed by the
hydrostatic interlock unit when the lifeboat is not fully waterborne.
