Objectives of this Module

Upon completion of this section, the participant should be

able to:

Types of Applications

There are many methods

and applications for ESP
Systems
 Petroleum and Industrial
water supplies
 Gas well dewatering
 Horizontal Pumping
Systems
 Coil tubing deployment
 Subsea

Standard Application A typical application uses a
multi-stage centrifugal pump
suspended in the well by
production tubing.

Below the pump is an intake

which can either provide an
entry for well fluid or also
Centrifugal Pump provide gas separation if
necessary.

Intake or Gas Separator Below the intake is a seal

section which isolates the
well fluid from the motor.

Protector Finally the submergible motor

on the bottom of the string
provides the necessary
Electric Motor horsepower.
Shrouded Application

A variation on the standard

application uses a "shroud“ to
Centrifugal Pump
divert fluid past the motor prior
to entering the pump to ensure
adequate cooling.
Intake or Gas Separator
This may be done in low flow
rate wells or large casing sizes
Protector
to increase the flow velocity

It may also be done in those

Electric Motor
applications where the unit is
set below the perforations.

Shroud
Booster Application

Annular Liner (Can)

An ESP can also be used in
booster applications where a very
Centrifugal Pump high boost pressure is required.
Low pressure fluid enters the
casing annulus and is diverted past
the motor where it then enters the
Intake pump and exits the tubing head at
the required pressure.

This type of application is

Protector
especially useful in populated
areas due to the lack of surface
equipment or noise.
Electric Motor
Bottom Intake

Electric Motor
A slight variation on the ESP
unit is the bottom intake
system.
Protector
This places the intake at the
very bottom of the hole and is
useful in dewatering
applications or low NPSH
Centrifugal Pump applications where setting the
intake as low as possible is
desirable.
Intake

Thrust Chamber
or Bottom Discharge

Another configuration offers

the discharge on the very
bottom for low or high
Electric Motor pressure injection.

Injection fluid can enter either

the casing annulus or the
Protector tubing (or both). If injection
fluid enters through the tubing
string, a perforated joint above
the unit will admit the fluid into
Intake the annulus just above the
motor.

Centrifugal Pump
Production –
Injection

This is a typical
two-well system
for production
and injection.

This uses a
standard SPS
unit (or any
other type as
required).
Inter Zone Injection

Using a bottom discharge

unit, inter-zone injection is
possible which allows
production and injection with
only one well.
Electric Motor
Using a different
configuration, it is also
Protector possible to produce from a
lower zone and inject into an
upper zone.
Intake
A packer is required in either
case.
Centrifugal Pump
Coil Tubing Pumping
System
 An increasingly popular
application for ESP units is
to use either an “internal
cable coil tubing deployed”
or coil tubing pumping
system.
 This allows installation of an
ESP unit without the need
for a large workover rig and
allows much faster
installation.
This is useful in areas where
access is difficult such as
the jungle or where
traditional workover costs
are significant such as
offshore.

Horizontal Pumping System – HPS

The pumps can also be used with a standard surface motor to provide
high pressure boosting. This system offers very low noise and vibration
useful in populated areas. Repairs are also as simple as lifting off the bad
part and putting on a new one which virtually eliminates the long down
times associated with triplex or other PD pumps.

PUMP

Horizontal pumps can also offer this system in a diesel engine driven
system. All units come pre-mounted and aligned on the skid so
installation is simple.

For Additional Unit

Paralleling pumps allows much higher flow rates. Another advantage of

parallel pumps is that if one fails, it can be isolated with valves in the
manifold allowing the other pumps to continue operating while the failed
unit is being repaired.
Diesel Engine Driven Unit with Speed Increaser

Good option for remote areas where electricity is not readily available.
Use of a speed increaser between the engine and pump optimizes
performance.
Special dampening system prevents engine vibration from damaging
the pump.

Progressing Cavity Submergible Pumping
System (PCP)

PC PUMP
The Bottom Drive PCP utilizes a four pole electrical
submergible motor, modular protector, power cable and a flex
drive gearbox to drive a progressing cavity pump. The

INTAKE
downhole components are run on standard production tubing.
Speed reduction is achieved with a flex drive gearbox,
available in ratios from 4:1 to 16:1.

GEARBOX
The Bottom Drive PCP eliminates the rod breaks and tubing
wear associated with the conventional PCP applications, and

PROTECTOR
has the ability to successfully produce deviated and horizontal
wells and double the setting depths of PCP’s while improving
efficiency.

MOTOR
Furthermore, with the PCSPS we have the ability to measure
downhole pressure and temperature.

In–line Booster Pump

Pumps can also be used for in-line booster applications.

The pump and motor come preassembled in a "can" with flange
adapters and can be mounted either horizontally or vertically.
This system is useful for low or high flow rate requirements where
the pressure and horsepower of an HPS system are not required.

Pumps are also used
to pressure water for
businesses and hotels
where normal water
pressure will not reach
the upper stories.

An industrial pump
driven by a small VSD
can easily maintain a
constant line pressure.
