INGRESS PROTECTION
The motor protection degrees carried out according to IEC 60034-5 standards, are: IP 55 (standard) totally enclosed motors,
fan cooled, protected against penetration of dust and water jets coming from any direction. Motors manufactured to IP 56
(totally enclosed motors, upon request) are protected against dust penetration and against powerful water jets. Normally
IP 56 motors are supplied with external fan (IC 411, IC 416 or IC 418). The external fan is covered by a fan cover with IP 20
protection degree, in line with safety standards. Motors for vertical mounting V1 are supplied with a rain cowl. The terminal
box is built in IP55 or IP56 protection degree. Excepted from the description above are our IP23 open drip proof motors.

In general the frames are identical to the IP 23 frames however the internal cooling air goes through a heat exchanger to
assure the IP 54 protection class, due to the slightly higher inside air temperature, the power of the AA motors are lower than
the IP 23 motors.

ROTOR BALANCING
The motors are dynamically balanced with a half-key and fit vibration class A in accordance with standard CEI EN 60034-14.
Where low noise is a priority requirement, the option Z-VR ensures reduced vibration in accordance with vibration class B. The
table below reports effective velocity of vibration for normal (A) and B grade balancing.
COOLING
The designation of cooling method is given by the IC code (International Cooling), according to IEC 60034-6. Motors in standard
execution are supplied with IC 411 cooling systems, incorporating a bi-directional fan. All frame sizes can be supplied with
cooling system IC 416 on request. In this case a proper fan is fitted inside the fan cover, suitably reinforced, in order to make
ventilation independent of rotation speed. Other cooling systems as stated in the table below are available on request.

BEARINGS
All motors have regreasable bearings at the drive-end and the non-drive-end. The motors are as standard equipped with
ball bearings with C3-tolerance. Roller bearings or sleeve bearings are available on request. On request, sleeve bearings are
available from RENK/Germany (increased delivery time).
As standard we recommend high grade lithium based grease, e.g. CALTEX II-R. For special applications with temperatures
under -40°C ambient temperature or high temperatures we recommend special greases, e.g. from KLÜBER/Germany.
The standard life time of the motors at direct coupling is about 100,000 hours of operation. Motors in belt-drive-applications
generally have life-time over 40,000 hours for motors with 4, 6, 8 or a higher number of poles (= nominal speed lower than
1,800rpm) and over 20,000 hours for motors with 2 poles (= 1,800rpm and higher). For further details please refer to the
bearing manufacturer’s life-time tables and maintenance instructions.
During the first 200 hours of operation (run-in time) the grease will be evenly dispersed over the raceway and ball surfaces.
So eventually a slightly higher sound level can be heard. Both under and over-greasing can cause damage to the bearings. In
practice, over-greasing occurs more frequently.
The dimensions of the terminal boxes for IC411, IC611 and IC01 are as follows:
Medium voltage: 635 x 420 x 342 mm
High voltage: 770 x 535 x 414 mm
All insulating materials used to produce the motors are F or H insulation class. After the winding has been filled,
interconnected and fixed in the stator, it is impregnated by soaking it in oven-curing F-class resins. For special applications,
the relevant motor gets tropicalized. Therefore an enamel is used, that fits the following characteristics: heatproof, humidity
proof, chemical proof. Moreover, the motor also can be fitted to be used in maritime environments suitable for sea-water
exposure. The impregnation cycle is carried out under vacuum (VPI).
In such conditions, the temperature reached by the motors is lower than the one provided by insulation class B, the operating
characteristics are guaranteed with the tolerances defined by IEC 60034-1 standards and recommendations. The values are
shown in the following table.
CHARACTERISTICS TOLERANCES
MOTOR POWER ≤ 150kW -15% of (1-η)
EFFICIENCY
MOTOR POWER > 150KW -10% of (1-η)
POWER
The power rating (design rating) applies for continuous operation as specified in EN 60034-1 at a coolant temperature of 40°C
and an altitude of <1,000m above mean sea level, at nominal frequency of 50 Hz and design voltage.
The motors have thermal reserves which permit the following overloads in continuous operation:
• 10% above the rated power output at 4°C coolant temperature
or
• rated power output at 50°C coolant temperature at an installation altitude of 2,500m above sea level
These conditions apply only alternatively; when both apply, the power must be reduced.
OVERLOAD CAPACITIES
In compliance with EN 60034-1, all motors can be exposed to the following overload conditions:
• 1.5 times the rated current for 2 min
• 1.6 times the rated torque for 15 sec
Both conditions apply to the rated voltage and rated frequency.
In different environmental conditions output ratings vary and are obtainable by applying the factors as mentioned in
“COOLING” considering the maximum temperature protection provided by insulation class B.
The motors are designed to be operated at an ambient temperature of -40°C to 47°C. For regions with high or low ambient
temperatures out with this range then we can supply a motor from our engineered range.
DUTIES
All technical data reported in the tables are referenced to continuous duty (S1). Upon request, motors for limited duty (S2, S6)
can be supplied.
STARTING
Our motors are suitable for the following types of starting:
• direct
• by auto-transformer
• soft-start: when the starting is finished soft-start should be by-passed. Use precaution when motor is powered with inverter
• by inverter: see as recommended in the paragraph “Inverter Supply”
THERMAL PROTECTION
All our motors have inbuilt positive temperature co-efficient thermistors (PTCs). These thermistors quickly change their
standard resistance value at their active temperature.
The PTCs are directly installed in the head of the coils so that every change of temperature is measured. The characteristic of the curve
(shown below) demonstrates that the increase of the PTCs in the resistance from the switching point onwards is exponential. The
behavior of the PTCs in the relevant range of temperature from TK = 60°C to 180°C is in accordance to IEC 60738-1.
Upon request, as thermal protection, platinum resistance thermometers PT100 can be installed in the motors. The resistance
of a PT100 has a variable resistance that changes linearly with the winding temperature. These are particularly suitable for
continuous winding temperature monitoring.
The protection is normally made by 3 sensitive elements, one for every phase, series connected and with two terminals in a
specially provided terminal board located in the main terminal box or in a specially provided auxiliary terminal box.

ANTI-CONDENSATION HEATERS
Motors subject to atmospheric condensation, either through standing idle in damp environments or because of wide
ambient temperature variations, may be fitted with anti-condensation heaters. They are of tape form and are normally
mounted on the stator winding head.
Anti-condensation heaters are normally switched on automatically, mostly when the motor is in standstill. When the supply to
the motor is interrupted, heating the motor is used to avoid water condensation. Normal supply voltage is 115 V or 220/240
V. Anti-condensation heater terminals are led to a specially provided terminal board located in the main terminal box. Upon
request they can be led to a terminal board located in an auxiliary terminal box.

INVERTER SUPPLY
All our motors are designed to be supplied by inverter (VFD, Variable Frequency Drive). These motors can be driven up to the
rated frequency (50 Hz) with supply voltage proportional to the frequency (see diagr. 1), at higher frequencies they can be
supplied at constant voltage up to 87Hz (see diagr. 2).
By the type of supply shown in diagr. 3, the flux created by the stator windings will be constant from 0 frequency to 50 Hz
frequency, at frequencies higher than 50 Hz, the flux will be lower than the maximum value.
NOTE: At low frequencies (0 – approx. 10 Hz), due to the voltage drop, the supply voltage should be slightly
increased in order to keep the flux constant. This voltage increase depends both on the motor type and on the
inverter type. Consequently the motors in standard execution (self ventilating code IC411) are able to run at constant
torque between 25 and 50 Hz and at constant power in the section included between 50 and 87 Hz
(see diagrams 2 and 3).
We allow ourselves a temperature rise according to insulation class F.
Upon request, motors can be equipped with an auxiliary fan (code IC 416), in this case they can supply a constant torque
between 0 and 50 Hz and a constant power in the section included between 50 and 87 Hz.
Moreover, steep voltage fronts to the motor terminals (du/dt) originated by the short commutation times of the IGBT,
generate considerable stresses on the insulating materials. Consequently motor insulation must be carried out with the
utmost care because it has to be able to withstand such high stresses.
Taking into account the number of turns/coil and the number of coils, all motors produced are categorized as: category C-
severe.
Regarding the winding all HV motors can be driven with a VFD. However the type of VFD must be advised in order to provide
the correct insulation thickness.
MAXIMUM SPEED
Motors supplied by inverter can run at a frequency higher than the rated one supplying the rated power up to the maximum
frequency mentioned in the following table. In these conditions the motor maximum torque remains 1.6 times higher than
the rated torque.
lt is also possible to supply motors at a higher frequency. In this case, the deliverable motor power will be progressively
reduced. In any case, the motor maximum speeds, also at no load operation or dragged by the machine, must never exceed
the limits detailed in the following table:
SHAFT DIMENSIONS
The schematic below illustrates the basic shaft dimensions of the motor range. Shaft dimensions
are listed in chapter “Outline & Installation Dimensions”.
NOTE: Dimensions and further data for a shaft at the NDE on request.
FLANGES
Additionally to chapter “Outline & Installation Dimensions”, the table below shows the dimensions for the flanges in mounting
execution V1. The following figure shows a motor for mounting execution V1 with cooling system IC411. It shall only illustrate
the position of the flange measurements. The measurements of the flanges for IC411, IC611 and IC01 are identical.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
ENGINEERED TO ORDER
Parsons Peebles have a rich pedigree in manufacturing motors and generators for special and unusual applications spanning
over 120 years. Instead of modifying a standard design to suit a new application, we start with a blank sheet of paper and
build the specification to exactly suit the requirements of the application, environment and client preference.
With a comprehensive historical database of 1,000s of existing designs and their resulting test data, we are able to produce
new, custom designs with an exceptional level of predictability, avoiding load compatibility and performance issues on
completion of manufacture.
MADE TO PERFORM
• Performance characteristic specifically engineered to suit the requirements
of the application
• Extensive range of enclosure, cooling, mounting and bearing options
available
• Area classifications include Safe, Exn A, Ex p, Ex e
• Low starting current options (down to 270% FLC)
• Low noise level options (Multi-MW machines down to 68d(B)A)
• Packaged solutions available including VSD, soft start, switchgear and
control systems
• In-house full load test facility to 8MW, 50 and 60Hz
MADE TO FIT
• We offer mechanical interchangeability with existing irreparable or obsolete
plant, including replacing old machines with imperial dimensions
• Increased outputs available in existing mechanical fixings and size envelope
• Reverse engineering of existing assets where machine format and
performance must be duplicated exactly
• Site surveys available to assess existing machines for replacement (including
dimensional and performance surveys)
MADE TO LAST
• Typical design life of 40 years
• Unsurpassed quality ethic in all stages of design & manufacture
• Extensive reference list of Parsons Peebles machines still in operation after
30-40 years
• Proven history of supreme reliability in the most arduous and hostile of
environments
RANGE OVERVIEW
SPECIALITIES
Parsons Peebles can supply engineered to order for new-build, drop-in
replacement or “niche” machines with the following specialisms:
Since the concept was introduced in 1946 the system has been used
as a standard feature in motors for the most arduous and demanding
applications in the world. We are not aware of a single rotor bar that
has failed using this system.
The Parsons Peebles keyed rotor bar system allows for a sub-slot in
the lamination into which individually matched ground steel keys are
driven. These keys force the rotor bar upwards, against the lamination,
thereby eliminating bar to core clearance and forcing the rotor bar to
remain straight.
A BESPOKE SOLUTION
Parsons Peebles can offer direct “drop-in” replacements In addition to completely new motors or generators we can

SITUATION
Parsons Peebles were requested to evaluate the potential to obtain increased
output power from an existing pump drive motor. Thereafter Parsons Peebles were
requested to evaluate the feasibility of supplying a new-build strategic spare which
could be used at two different locations on the same installation.
While the units are similar they were for completely different applications, one a
pump drive the other a compressor drive with other discrete differences in the
configuration of the machines.
CHALLENGE
• While the units are similar they were for completely different applications, one a
pump drive the other a compressor drive with other discrete differences in the
configuration of the machines
• The new machine to be utilised as a spare for the existing machines to permit
removal of the existing machines for maintenance overhaul at a shore based
workshop whilst maintaining pumping and compression capability for
production
• To evaluate the existing Crude Oil Export Pump Motor design for a higher output
power in the existing machine or a revised design in the same footprint
