Answer any five questions. The figures in the right-hand margin indicate marks.
1/) A400V, 750 rpm, 70A de shunt motor has an arnature resistance of0.302. When rnning under
no load condition, the motor is to be breaked from an initial speed of 700 rpm by plugging with
armature current limited to 90A. What extenal resistance should be connected in series with the
armature? Calculate the initial braking torgue and its value when the speed has fallen to 300 rpm.
Neglect saturation. [5]
2/ (b) A 2pole separately excited de motor has the ratings of 220V, 100A and 750rpm.Resistance of
the armature is 0.12, The motor has two field coils which are normally connected in parallel. It is
used to drive a load whose torque is expressed as TL 500- 0.3N, N-m where N is the motor
speed in rpm. Speeds below and above rated are obtained by armature voltage control and by
connecting the two field windings in series respectively. Calculate the motor armature current and
speed when the armature voltage is reduced to l00V.

2. (a) A220V, 960rpm, 12.8A separately excited de motor has armature circuit resistance and
inductance of2ohm and 150mH, respectively. It is fed from a l-phase half-controlled rectifier with
äan àc source voltage of 220V, 5OHZ.Calculate motor torque for a =60 and speed= 500rpm. (5]
(bExplain the speed-time curve &its approximation for electric traction system. [3]
T~ Om andP~ m curve for armature voltage control &field flux control of DC drive. [2]

3.(a) A3-phase, 400V, 50HZ,6 pole, delta connected, slip-ring induction motor has rotor resistance
of 0.2 ohm and leakage reactance of 1ohm per phase referred to stator. When driving a fan load it
runs at full load at 5% slip. What resistance must be inserted in the motor circuit to obtain a speed of
800 jpm?Neglect stator impedance and magnetizing branch. Stator to rotor turn ratio is 2. [5]
25 What do you mean by steady state stability of electric drive? Explain it with derived formula. 5]
.4 (a) A locomotive of 110 tonnes can just accelerate a train weighing 500 tones with an acceleration
Orto Lkmphps on up-gradient with G=10. Train resistance is 35 N/tonne and the increase of mass due
rotational inertia is 10%. 90% of the löcomotive weight is carried by driving wheels. This
Joçomoiyve is assisted by another weighing 90 tones and with its full weight coming on driving
Wheels. Calculate the weight of the additional bogies that could be attached to this train maintaining
the same schedule of operation on thé
same track.

What are the different types of electric braking used in DC drives? Explain the braking which
gives fast response. [21

-5. (a)A thyristor converter fed de motor has the following specifications: Rated armature current =
400A, armature resistance = 0.01 ohm. The drive operates on following duty cycles:
a) Acceleration at twice the rated armature current for 10 sec.
b) Running at full load for 20 sec.
c) Deceleration at twice the rated armature current for l0 sec.
d) Idling interval.
The core loss is constant at 1kW. If ß has a value of 0.5, determine the maximum frequency of
drive operation. [5]

(b A110 tonne motor coach is driven by four motors, each developing a torque of 5000 N-m during
acceleration. If up-gradient G = 40, gear ratio a = 0.25, gear transmission efficiency 98%, wheel
radius 0.54m, train resistance 25N/tonne, effective mass on account of rotational inertia is 15%
higher, calculate the time taken to attain a speed of 100 kmph. 5]
