I. INTRODUCTION

This chapter includes the statement of the problem, its objectives, significance of the study,

scope, limitations and delimitations and definition of terms that present in the study to facilitate the

understanding of the topic.

Adhesive is any that is capable of holding materials together in a functional manner by surface

attachment that resists separation. In general term it includes, cement, glue and paste terms that one

often used interchangeably for any organic material that forms an adhesive bond.

Rice glue is a gel or adhesive is made of a smooth mush of well-cooked white rice, diluted to the

desired thickness with water. It has been used since antiquity for various arts and crafts; for instance, it

is a woodworking and paper glue. When dried, it is transparent. It is also acid free and more resistant to

humidity and glue made with wheat. It can be diluted to the desired consistency with water. The small

particles substances from washed rice (residue) can be an alternative use because it has also a property

of what the rice has and it is easy to make and inexpensive.

Baking soda acts as an accelerant on the glue. The bicarbonate molecules in baking soda react

with cyanoacrylate to create a reactive ion that more easily bonds with other cyanoacrylate molecules.

These bonds establish long, polymer chains that are stronger and more resilient than cyanoacrylate-water

bonding.

Vinegar will cause some foaming and bubbling, when it is mixed to baking soda and promotes

the linkage of many molecules. This links form tangled chains and these tangled chains are what makes

glue sticky.

In this study the researcher seeks to know if the residue from the water of washed rice in the

baking soda can be used as an alternative in making and producing a glue.

The Rationale of the Study

In this experiment, the students want to emphasize that everyone can make a homemade glue

without toxins in an easy way. To show and to teach practicality to every student, to save money and

avoid buying the toxic glue in the market with the same quality.

The students chose this topic since a sticky paste can be made at your home instead of buying

an expensive brand of store-bought glue. A lot of children are sometimes unsupervised when using glue

and because of the injuries that can occur.

Most store-bought pastes that are popular is toxic because of the chemical component contain

from ingredients to make it stick and become a paste. If we make an alternative to store-bought glue, we

could possibly create a better and much safer paste that will not cause danger to children. Since the

ingredients that our group will use is non-toxic, this will be safe for many people.

This idea motivates the researchers to conduct this study, to prove potential of the component

materials as an alternative store-bought glue instead of buying in the market.

II. METHODOLOGY

The researchers conducted a study entitled “An Alternative Store- Bought Glue”. This study uses

experimental research that will determine the effectiveness of residue from the water of washed rice as an

alternative glue.

In this experiment the researchers used observation to support the study to make their experiment

successful. Researchers used the materials residue from the water of washed rice, baking soda, vinegar and tap

water.

In order to make the modified organic- non- toxic glue, the researchers need to do steps.

Materials and Ingredients

1. In a small container, put the water of

washed rice and leave it for one day.

2. After a long day of waiting slowly spill the water in a

small container, you will notice there’s a white particle
at bottom of the container (that’s the substance
required, the residue).

3. Get 10 table spoon of residue, then pour it in a pan

with vinegar and tap water. Set the stove in a low fire.

Stir the mixture gradually, until it reaches in its

sticky substance.

4. Mix the curd, a small amount of baking soda

(about 1/8 teaspoon). The reaction between the
baking soda and the residual vinegar will cause
some foaming and bubbling.

5. Adjust the consistency of the glue to suit your

needs. If the glue is lumpy, add a bit more baking
soda. If it is too thick, stir in more water.

6. Store the glue in a covered container. It will last 1 to

2 days on the counter, but 1 to 2 weeks if you
refrigerate it.
