CHAPTER ONE
1. INTRODUCTION

1.10 The history and description of the school

This project was conducted in Riokindo Boys High School. It’s an extra-county school that is
located at Nyabitunwa Sub-location, Machoge Masaba Location, Bomachoge Borabu Sub-
county in Kisii County, Kenya. It was established in the year 1958 as community based school
under the sponsorship of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. In 1996 it started as a boarding
school for boys. It was among the few schools established in Kisii Land. There has been 11
school principals from the time of establishment to the current Principal Mr. Fred Mogaka. The
school population has been relative so high with the current population of 2000 student from
across the nation. The school performance over the years was very high except for a few years
that it experienced a downfall in the school mean. However in the recent past, the school has
shown tremendous improvement toping in the best schools in the country. The school’s motto is
‘ Elimu ndiyo silaha’’.

1
1.1 Coverage of the syllabus/major topic
Geography as a teaching subject in Keny an education system has been facing a lot
challenges especially, in the teaching professional. This is mainly because of the mindset of error
in many students that geography subject is hard,This however can be attributed to the fact
that, there are inadequate teaching and learning materials developed by Georaphy
professionals, which can assist the learner understand geographical concepts.Geography as a
subject has proved to be very useful in the society especially in the study of climatology, geology,
agriculture mainly in the third world countries like Kenya. In kenya Geography is a career
subject, hence it should be emphasized in secondary school education.

Geography is categorized as both art and science.Taught atsecondary level as an optional subject
as from three in most Kenyan schools,However compulsory in form one and form two.The
teaching and learning resources of the subject should thefore enable the teacher to make lucrative
use of abstract instructional activities inorder to make and buld up clear vivid and simple
experience so as to give learnes meaningful abstract representation of reality. It is importart to
make a model on the topic OCEANS,SEAS AND THEIR COASTS,the sub topic;Features
Resulting from Wave Erosion and deposition which I have found challenging to the students
since many students are not from Coast where these features are found. This model will be
used in explanation of the processes of wave erosion and deposition and the resultant features for
effective teaching and learning of fundamental concepts that should be well understood in the
topic. It will also serve as a graet help in the field of specialization if any student if interested in
future studies

2
1.2 pedagogical justification of the choice of the project
Upon joining Mucharage secondary school on May 2019, I noted that there was a need to
have a sound project mainly in the teaching of Geography .This is because the project will help
to have a critical and practical aspects in teaching Geography and enhance the understanding of
the concepts in Geography among the learners. I found that
other subjects have some effective teaching aids and learning resources in Mucharage secondary
school hence few resources in Georaphy, due to this considering the fact that teaching of
geography can be enhanced and students change their attitude positively by designing and
coming up with some appealing and concrete teaching and learning resources in geography that
simplifies the hard concepts making them friendly to the students After some
consultations with Geography students,I Iearnt that they would like to have teaching and learning
resources in geography since they initially had none. This model is meant to help the learner
understand the abstract cocepts on all the coastal features the processes involved in their
formations and how they are brought to be, after I have perceived the topic as a problem to many
learners I have decided to come up with a model on features resulting from wave erosion and
deposation as a remedy for this problem.

3
1.3 The role of the project in aiding teaching and learning resources

The project will entail a model on the resultant features of wave erosion and deposition found on
coastal areas of the world. It will be done by the student teacher and the learner, this ensures that
the learner in totally involved in the project, and it will be used to teach other students in the
class. It will be a portable model of coastal features that will enhance the grasping, understanding
and fathoming of the abstract concepts required from the learner by the student teacher. I found
this relevant because most of the students are not from coastal areas and theoretical work has
proved not to be much productive in this area therefore the model will serve to simplify it and
make its understanding abit easier.

1.4 The relationship between the project with the available resources and school needs
the choice of the project on coastal features as a result of wave action was necessary
due to inadequate number of teaching and learning materials in Geography. The choice of the
project was promoted by the following factors;

1.The willingness of the school administration to facilitate and support the project.

2. The co-operation between the learner and the student teacher.

3. Availability of the required equipments in the school and in the nearest market.

4. The simplicity of the materials to be used

5.The urgent need of the resource by the learner

CHAPTER 2

2.PROJECT DESCRIPTION

2.0 Project’s objectives

The project of modelling a model that shows and explains the features formed as a result of wave
action on coastal regions requires a specific complex model that explains how coastal features
are formed ,and the processes involved in their formations, this project objectives will be learner
centered. This means that the project will enhance the learner’s understanding of coastal features,
the project will involve more senses to the learner; this is to enhance total understanding of these
concepts for it involves touching, seeing and hearing as the student teacher will be giving brief
lectures and explanations before, during and after the modelling on this light the project will help
the learner to;

1) Explain the processes of coastal formations.

2) Appreciate the role of wave action on shaping the nature.

3) Improve creativity of the learner even in other academic area.

4) Appreciate Geography as a practical and enjoyable subject.

2.1 Project procedure

step 1:

The student teacher discusses the topic coverage with the learner, who will eventually assist in
the actual preparation of the entire project, the project will be mainly of how coastal features are
formed due to wave action.

Step 2:

5
This stage will entail the purchase of marker pen, manila papers and binding tapes which will be
used in drawing the features resulting to wave erosion and deposition.

Step 3:
This stage will entail using manila pieces and the mark pen in drawing all the
depicted features formed as a result of wave action on coastal regions, after this the
project will be used to explain the to the other learners.

Stage 4:
This stage will entail evaluations of the project showing how the project has
been useful to the learner by writing the final report ,the success and the challenges
encountered during project development will also be included in this section

2.2 description of materials to be used

The project will need , a text book especially certificate that contains a well-illustrated
coastal features which will give a deep impression to the learner, pens and mark pens will
be used for drawing of features on the manila papers and the binding tape will be used
stick for durability of the manila papers and a timber will be used for hanging.

2.3 project design
