THE HOSPITAL

A hospital is a place where sick people go when they don’t feel well. Hospitals have many specialized
areas for the care of patients. For example, the Emergency Room - ER or Emergency Department –
ED where people with conditions such as illness or trauma go to get immediate medical care; the
Intensive Care Unit – ICU where critically ill patients are monitored and treated; the Operating Room -
OR where surgeries are performed; and Hospital Rooms where patients are taken for recovering.

Department Staff Function


Wards / Offices Doctor They diagnose and treat the patients.
Cubicles Physician They are also called General Practitioners - GP
Wards Nurse / Sister They provide direct care to patients.
Cardiology Cardiologist They specialize in the heart and blood vessels.
Dermatology Dermatologist They treat diseases of the skin.
Gynecology Gynecologist They treat disorders of the female reproductive system.
Hematology Hematologist They study blood disorders.
Neurology Neurologist They treat disorders of the nervous system.
Radiology Radiologist They specialize in x-rays and other images.
Renal Unit Urologist They treat kidney diseases.
Operating Room Anesthesiologist They provide anesthetics during the operation. They are
also called Anesthetists.
Orthopedics Orthopedist They treat bones.
Pharmacy Pharmacist They dispense medication.
Physiotherapy Physiotherapist They design special exercises for patients.
Psychiatry Psychiatrist They specialize in mental diseases.
Emergency Room Paramedic They respond to emergencies and give first aid.
Pediatrics Pediatrician They deal with sick children.
Obstetrics Obstetrician They specialize in pregnancy and birth.
Midwife She helps pregnant women deliver babies.
Lab Lab technician They examine samples and tissues under the
microscope.
Surgery Dept. Surgeon They perform operations.
Operating Room Scrub nurse They assist the surgeon during the operation.
Offices Consultant They specialize in one field of medicine. They are also
called specialists.
Hospital Porter, Orderly They move equipment, patients, etc. around the hospital.
