1. Calculate the strains in the X,Y and Z directions for the loaded block shown.

σy = 40MPa

σx = 100MPa

σz = 60MPa

[0.625 x 10⁻³; -0.25 x 10⁻³; -0.375 x 10⁻³]

2. A cylindrical bar, 30mm in diameter, is subjected to an axial load of 50kN. What radial
compressive stress would be required to prevent any change in diameter?
Take E = 200GPa and Poisson's ratio = 0.28. 50kN

σradial σradial

[27.49MPa C]

3. A block of steel, 51mm square by 76mm long, carries a tensile load of 400kN on the
square faces and a compressive load of 715kN on a pair of 51mm by 76mm faces. Find the
change in volume of the block.
Take E = 205GPa and Poisson's ratio = 0.25.

4. A rectangular bar, 75mm wide by 50mm thick, extends 2mm on a length of 1.5m under a
axial force of 1MN. If the corresponding decrease in width is 0.0275mm, calculate the
value of Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. What would be the thickness under a force
of 800kN?

[200GPa; 0.275; 0.01467]

5. A bar, 100mm by 50mm by 250mm, carries a tensile force of 400kN in the direction of its
length and a compressive force of 4MN on its 100mm by 250mm faces. Determine the
new dimensions of the bar and it's change in volume. Assume the material to be steel
with E = 200GPa and Poisson's ratio = 0.25.
