1. A flywheel of weight 24kN is mounted on a solid shaft, 125mm in diameter, midway

between the bearings, which are 1.5m apart. If the maximum direct stress is to be
limited to 85MPa and the shaft transmits 1000kW at 503r/min, calculate the maximum
end thrust that could be applied to the shaft.
What would be the maximum shear stress in the shaft?

[113.6kN; 56.91MPa]

2. An elevator drive sheave (pulley) of diameter 1m and negligible mass is mounted on a

shaft midway between the bearings which are 800mm apart. Under the worst conditions
the rope tensions are 25kN on the cage side and 10kN on the counterpoise side of the
sheave. Calculate the diameter of the shaft if the maximum shear stress is to be limited to
50MPa. What would be the principle stress under these conditions? Neglect the mass of the
shaft.

[101.5mm; 84.06MPa]

3. A hollow steel shaft has an internal diameter of 50mm and an external diameter of
120mm. The shaft transmits 600kW at 600r/min. Using the maximum direct stress
theory of failure, determine the allowable applied bending moment if the maximum
direct stress is limited to 120MPa.
If the shaft were also subjected to an end thrust of 100kN, what would then be the
allowable bending moment that could be applied to this shaft?
Calculate also the minor principle stress as well as the maximum shear stress acting
under these conditions.

[18.6kNm;16.84kNm;-7MPa;63.5MPa]

4. A solid steel shaft transmits 100 kW at 900r/min. The maximum torque is 20% > the
mean. The shaft is carried in two bearings one metre apart, with a flywheel of mass 1000kg,
300mm from one bearing. Determine:
4.1) the maximum torque
4.2) the maximum bending moment
4.3) the equivalent torque
4.4) the shaft diameter if the allowable stress is 36MPa.

[1.273kNm; 2.06kNm; 2.42kNm; 70mm]

5. A thin cylinder, internal diameter 50mm and wall thickness 0.8mm, is closed at the
ends and subjected to an internal pressure of 1.35MPa. One end is fixed and an axial
torque is applied to the other end so as to induce a maximum principle stress of
50MPa at a point on the curved surface of the cylinder. What is the magnitude of the
