A NOTE FROM THE COMPOSER
Trigger Man is my second score for Ti West. Working with Ti is
extremely rewarding because he asks that sound and music play
very strong roles in his films. Ti, sound-designer Graham Reznick,
and myself work feverishly together trying to establish an unusual
and unsettling sonic world. The music really started to take shape
when, in the shower, I thought of using a ping-pong delay on a
cello, which lead to the minimalist approach that characterizes
this score. Dave Eggar’s amazing skills on the cello are featured
heavily here.
For The Roost, our first film together (re-released here on CD),
Ti came to me with two things in mind: a synth score homage to
70’s and 80’s b horror films, and something separate to address
the more active and tense moments of the film. The budget avail-
able and the wide variety of textures I wanted lead me to the idea
of writing an aggressive string quartet score. Dave Eggar and Tom
Chiu immediately came to mind to be the key musicians because
of my past work with them and their incredible handle on modern
string literature.
These scores were great fun to put together. Ti is a rare director,
open to such unconventional approaches to scoring, also willing
to give a composer the room necessary to pursue them. I look
forward to our next project together! Jeff Grace
