What is light?
Light is a radiant energy. It radiates equally in all
directions and spreads over a large area as it
emanates from its source.
Indirect glare
DIFFUSION
Diffuseness is a measure of light’s direction and dispersion
as it emanates from its source. This quality of light affects
both the visual atmosphere of a room and the appearance
of objects within it.
Light-absorbing textures,
however such as matt paints
make colours look darker and
more subtle.

LIGHT AND TEXTURES-Reflective Textures
Light-absorbing
textures such as matt
paints, linens, tweeds
and most wools absorb
the light. This reduces
the impact of the
colour. So colours on
these surfaces tend to
look darker, more
subtle.

cleaner and leak less.
Tubular skylight
( light tube)
Collects sunlight
through a small,
clear acrylic dome on the roof.
ELECTRIC LIGHT SOURCES
The electric light source used in
lighting fixtures are called lamps.

Surface-Mounted Fixtures
Cove, valance and cornice
lighting are all methods for
illuminating a space indirectly
from within an architectural
detail.
They give a soft indirect glow
to the area they illuminate
and are often used to
highlight ceiling details or wall
textures.

PENDANT MOUNTED FIXTURES
Pendant mounted light fixtures are attracted to either a
recessed or surface-mounted junction box concealed by a
canopy and hang below the ceiling on a stem, chain, or
cord.

PORTABLE LAMPS
Decorative lights serve as accents within a space. The lights they
produce may be secondary to the appearance of the fixture, whose
glowing surface draws the eye.
The light sources are places close to-either above or besides the task
surface enabling the available wattage to be used more efficiently than
with ambient lighting
Measurement of
illuminance , however
are used to select
lamps and lighting
fixture and to evaluate
the lighting design
MEASURING ILLUMINATION
The luminous –intensity distribution curve (LIDC) represents the
light pattern produced by a lamp or light fixture in a given
direction from the center of the light source
This information is normally available in a light fixture
MEASURING ILLUMINATION
• The coefficient of Utilization (CU) indicates the efficiency of a
light fixture. The CU is expressed as the ratio of the luminous
flux reaching a specified work plane to the total lumen output
of a light fixture.
