ACADEMICS
LIKE NO OTHER.
We’re part of the University of North Carolina System and one of North Carolina’s 16
public universities, consistently recognized at a national level for academic excellence
and affordability. U.S. News & World Report ranked UNCW among the Top 100 Public
National Universities in it's Best Colleges 2022 guidebook. This is the third consecutive
year UNCW has earned this distinction, following the university's elevation in 2018 to
the category of "Doctoral Universities: High Research Activity" from the Carnegie
Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

Applied learning is an essential part of the UNCW student experience, as students

integrate theories, ideas and skills into new settings. The university prepares students
for the global world beyond the classroom through four core categories of applied
learning: undergraduate research, study abroad, internships and service learning.
Advisors will help you choose your direction and take the right steps as you

Honors College
The UNCW Honors College offers an immediate community for
motivated and creative students to discover and pursue their academic
passions, engaging fully in the university and broader communities
as citizen-scholars. As an Honors student you become junior colleagues
with faculty, thinking about topics from multiple perspectives, learning
by doing and taking ownership of your own questions and how to
find the answers. Students in UNCW’s Honors College can expect
to develop strong relationships with upper-level honors students,
academic advisors and honors faculty mentors.

The Honors College faculty and curriculum will push you to engage
with bigger questions, provide a larger context for your academic
major and foster immediate links to broaden the community. What
are the connections between art, science and mental health? Why is
culture important if you’re interested in medicine? Honors students
become well-rounded, interdisciplinary thinkers.

Honors College classes are small – usually fewer than 20 students –

and you’ll receive personal attention with the opportunity to engage
with faculty on a level similar to that enjoyed by graduate students
at other universities. You can develop as a leader and a professional,
learning directly from the faculty as you pursue independent research
and creative scholarship. Deep learning takes places within these
conversations, often outside of the classroom walls.

UNCW Scholarships
uncw.edu/finaid/scholarships
The university recognizes the excellent academic record and promise
of outstanding students by offering a limited number of renewable merit
scholarships. There is no separate application for merit scholarships;
all students are considered for these opportunities on the basis of their
application for admission. Our holistic review of scholarship candidates
considers academic achievement, leadership qualities, commitment to
service and promise of engagement in the life of the university.

Need-Based Scholarships and Grants

For individuals who qualify on the basis of need, most financial aid is

state, university or private sources. Need-based scholarships range from
$1,000 to the full cost of in-state tuition.
