Ex.

1:
Steel is produced in a Bessemer converter, using air to oxidize the impurities.
The converter charges 20 tonnes of hot metal (3.5% C, 1.5% Si, 1.2% Mn)
3/4th of the carbon form CO and 1/4th form CO2.
Assume: there is no loss of iron in slag.

Calculate:
(A) the volume of air used
(B) composition and total volume of product gases.
Amount of O2 required
Ex. 2 Input and output materials for LD process is as given below:

Given:
(i) Weight of steel scrap is 200 kg/T of steel production.
(ii) Weight of lime is 50 kg/T of steel production (lime contains 94.5% CaO, 2.5% MgO, 1.5% SiO2
and 1.5% Al2O3).
(iii)1.5% Fe loss with respect to steel production.

Calculate :
(A) Amount of hot metal to be charged per tonne of steel production.
(B) Amount of slag produced and composition of slag.
Calculate:
(B) Amount of slag produced and composition of slag.
Ex. 3: LD converter charged with 10 T of Hot Metal (3.5% C, 1.25% Si, 0.75% Mn, rest Fe).
40% C oxidized to CO2 and 60% C form CO.
1% Fe (w.r.t. HM) is lost

Calculate:
(A) Total amount of oxygen required (in N m3)
(B) Weight of slag produced.
