FLOATING RESORT

AT KOVALAM

ANGELIN SNEHA M
AIM
The aim of the project is to catalyze tourism in the region while upholding principles of cultural
integrity, and economic development. The project seeks to integrate the resort within the natural
beauty of Kovalam. By offering a unique and immersive experience for tourists

Objective
To drive an increase in tourism by creating a distinctive attraction that draws visitors to
Kovalam, thereby stimulating the local economy and supporting tourism-related businesses.
To enhance the tourist experience by offering unique and immersive experiences through
resort.
To provide space where peoples can relax and enjoy their life by their own means.
Prioritize guest comfort, satisfaction, and well-being through exceptional amenities, services,
and recreational offerings.
Scope

Conduct a thorough feasibility study to evaluate the viability of the floating resort project.
Conduct a case study of existing floating resorts worldwide to extract insights.
Developing a clear concept and vision for the resort that aligns with the project objectives,
incorporating tourism promotion.
Enhance the guest experience by providing exceptional hospitality, personalized services,
and a diverse range of amenities and activities that cater to the preferences and interests of a
wide range of travelers.
Integrate elements of Kerala's rich cultural heritage into the design and guest experiences of
the floating resort, offering opportunities for cultural immersion and showcasing local
traditions.
To understand the design considerations of flooting structure through architectural aspects.
Project Feasibility & Importance:

As India shifts its focus towards enhancing tourism in Lakshadweep, aiming to emulate the
success of destinations like the Maldives, the demand for floating resorts within the country is
poised to surge. Introducing floating resorts presents a strategic opportunity to elevate India's
tourism sector, leveraging its vast coastal resources and cultural richness. floating resorts can
harmoniously blend with the natural beauty of destinations like Kovalam, Kerala. Through my
architecture thesis project on a floating resort in Kovalam, Kerala, I aim to demonstrate the
feasibility and significance of these ventures in driving tourism. The design will be efficient
enough to cater the demands of the present time, strong enough to satisfy the tourist and in the
end giving the people a place of leisure and meditation.
Introduction
In the present days, in our country the environment is very stressful, everywhere there is
uncertainty of life, assets etc., in short there is uncertainty of “Happiness”. The definition of
happiness changes and gets more complex with time. I want to design a place where people can
relax, a place far away from the miseries of daily life, a place where they can forget the worries of
future. A place that speaks for the immense beauty of nature. In our cities, everything is
degenerating with the passage of time and the environment greatly affects the efficiency of work.

Design floating resorts, a place where, people can experience and feel the real face of nature that
makes them to wonder. Floating resorts propose a new form of rest in relation with the sea, in
different and exclusive environment. A different form, shape and different architecture for family
vacations activities. In this architectural environment visitors should change their life from the
daily routine. Families can enjoy noise free and comfort zone. Every suite/villa preserves its own
space to be able to enjoy an absolute privacy. The thesis intend to design such a place which can
move anywhere in water. Through floatation system people can move on water in their villas.
Visitors can enjoy their life with all basic land based facilities. Floating villas and master planning
is the primary factors of interest in water based resorts.
‘Solutions to global challenges’

OCEANIX Busan, in South Korea

The world’s first prototype floating city that adapts to sea level rise has just been unveiled at UN
headquarters in New York.Housing the growing global population is one of the key challenges facing
policymakers today - and one made even more challenging by climate change.

Without curbing emissions, it’s predicted more than 800 million people, living in 570 cities around the
world, could be at risk from sea level rise by 2050, according to the C40 network of global cities
addressing climate change.

The network estimates the cost of rising sea levels and inland flooding could reach $1 trillion by mid-
century.

But it’s hoped that this sustainable floating city prototype could go some way to solving the problem of
providing safe homes for vulnerable coastal communities.
Types

Floating

The buoyancy concept behind floating houses allows for their construction without needing a
foundation. Because of this, they are also known as buoyant houses. The base of the building
should be designed to facilitate floating and be capable of bearing dead load, live load, and any
other load that the house may impose. The houses might be built on a boat, a hollow pipe,
lightweight pads, or other similar elements that aid in floating and taking up the load.
stilt

Stilt houses (also called pile dwellings or lake dwellings) are houses raised on stilts (or piles) over
the surface of the soil or a body of water. Stilt houses are built primarily as a protection against
flooding; they also keep out vermin. The shady space under the house can be used for work or
storage.

Materials

The mooring system must be well designed as it ensures that the very large floating structure is
kept in position so that the facilities installed on the floating structure can be reliably operated
and to prevent the structure from drifting away under critical sea conditions and storms. A freely
drifting very large floating structure may lead to not only damage to the surrounding facilities but
also the loss of human life if it collides with ships. Note that there are a number of mooring
systems such as the dolphin-guideframe system, mooring by cable and chain, tension leg method
and pier/quay wall method.

Corrosion Protection

The corrosion protection system includes coatings, cathodic protection, corrosion allowance and
corrosion monitoring. Overprotection which may cause hydrogen embrittlement should be
avoided. In areas where marine organisms are active, antifouling coatings may be considered to
reduce marine growth. The steel should be protected from corrosion using a corrosion protection
system that is in accordance to specifications such as NACE Standard RP-01-76. Care should be
given to parts just beneath the mean low water level (MLWL) where severe local corrosion occurs.
For such parts, cathodic protection is generally applied while coating methods are applied for
parts shallower than the depth of 1 m below the low water level (LWL). The coating methods
include painting, titanium-clad lining, stainless steel lining, thermal spraying with zinc,
aluminium and aluminium alloy.
