Breakthrough: New system invented to monitor fish mortality in aquaculture with artificial

intelligence

Aquaculture in America is a $1.5 billion industry, creates 1.7 million jobs, and produces 626
million pounds of food. Funding from the USDA Agricultural Research Service provided the
resources to come up with an innovative method to improve the productivity of aquaculture. The
new AI model monitors aquaculture at all times to determine any fish mortality. It can notify fish
production staff about any unusual mortalities, which will allow people to make informed
management decisions and help prevent root causes of mass mortality events. This would be a
more efficient way to monitor aquaculture than traditional methods of human observation in
conjunction with cameras. The model was found to be reliable and 93.4% precise. This new
monitoring system could increase aquaculture productivity by improving management strategies
and preventing losses. As a result, the aquaculture industry could generate more money and
provide people with more food.
