Context/Analysis
Holden's description of the football game
is vivid and enriched by the author's use of
transitive verbs to illustrate the events of
the game. It is unclear whether Holden
intended to watch the game from the hill,
however, the vivid description of the
football field against the description of the
hill as "hell up on top [..]" suggests that
Holdon is dissatisfied with isolation from
the game and perhaps, has a longing
desire to be included. Nevertheless, he
stays on the hill and does not go an join
others in watching the game. Perhaps the
author's intention was to shows that
Holdon (or youth in general) alienates
others on his own accord. What prevents
Holdon from alleviating his loneliness?
