AQUATICS FOR FITNESS – CANOEING AND KAYAKING

Objectives:

A. Differentiate canoeing to kayaking.

B. Create a preparation exercise prior to participating in
canoeing and kayaking.
C. Enumerate the benefits of canoeing and kayaking to one’s
health.
CANOEING
IS AN ACTIVITY WHICH
INVOLVES PADDLING A CANOE WITH
A SINGLE-BLADED PADDLE.
CANOE

• is a lightweight narrow vessel,

typically pointed at both ends
and open on top, propelled by
one or more seated or
kneeling paddlers facing the
direction of travel and using a
single-bladed paddle.
The word “canoe” came from a Carib word “kenu”
which means dugout. Canoes were originally
made from a large tree trunk. The process of
building a canoe will take “one moon” or 28 days
before it can be used. The oldest canoe known is
“Pesse Canoe”, believed to be constructed
between 8200 and 7600 BC was found in
Netherlands.

KAYAKING
IS A WATERSPORT THAT
INVOLVES PADDLING USING
A DOUBLE-BLADED OAR
AND A SMALL BOAT
KNOWN AS A KAYAK.
Kayak or “qajak”, meaning “man’s boat” or
“hunters’ boat” originated from Inuit and
Aleut tribes of Arctic North America. The
oldest existing original kayaks are
exhibited in North America, Department
of the State Museum of Ethnology in
Munich.

Although canoe and kayak are different on each other, there are variations for each boat.
Length, the width or beam, the bottom shape, and the sides or profile of the boats are one of
these.
Length – the distance from the tip of the stern to the tip of the bow.
Beam – the width of the boat and is measured at the widest part of the canoe or kayak
Bottom shape – has a lot to do with the stability of the boat
a. Flat – has a good stability in calm waters
b. Round – for speed and efficiency
c. Vee – combination of the two. It comes with a good all-around performance of the boat.

There are varied activities in kayaking and canoeing. Activities may be
done in solo, dual or as group. You can do activities like fishing or bird
watching to relax or do challenging activities on the white rivers. The
following are some of the paddling activities that you can enjoy using
a kayak or a canoe:
a. Flat water recreation – a relaxing canoeing or kayaking where you
can take a gentle paddle down a calm river, ocean or lake to do
sightseeing.
b. White water kayaking or Canoeing – paddling down the white-
water rivers.
c. Sea kayaking – done in open waters such as the ocean or the lake.
d. Sailing – the canoe or kayak is fitted with a sail.
CANOEING AND KAYAKING
Canoeing and Kayaking are boating that both requires a paddle for KAYAKING
propulsion and steering. The difference between them is the
structure of the boats. A kayak has a covered deck, while a canoe is
wide open. Kayaking uses double-blades paddle and kayakers
extends their legs and are seated low on the deck. On the other
hand, a canoer sits on a raised seat or kneels on the bottom of the
boat, and it uses a single-blade paddle. Paddles of canoeing and
kayaking is also different. Paddles are the equipment used to
maneuver the boat. Canoes usually used a single-bladed paddles,
while kayaking uses double-bladed paddles. Kayaking and canoeing
can be done in rivers, lakes and the open sea.
Basic things to learn in kayaking and canoeing are divided into 4
skills: Learn how to get in and out of the boat, learn the correct
posture, proper way of holding the paddle, and how to make the CANOEING
boat move through paddling.
Canoeing and kayaking are activities that can range from low to high
intensity levels of activity, paddling will work out the muscles and the
heart and thus will improve one’s aerobic fitness, strength, and
flexibility. Health benefits such as the following can be observed:

• Stronger muscles and muscular endurance in the main muscles such

as back, arms, shoulders and chest which are involved in paddling.
• It improve cardiovascular fitness
• It develops the torso and leg strength as the strength to power a
canoe or kayak comes mainly from rotating the torso and applying
pressure with the legs.
