Why are you here?

Why do you choose this profession?

If you are a student;

what kind of teacher do you want to be your teacher?

THEORIES OF LEARNING

FACILITATOR: MINAR PAKPAHAN MARCH 25, 2024

In general, the term learning
is understood as the teacher's conscious effort
to help students
so that they can learn according to
their interests and needs

THE GOAL
provide different frameworks/approaches
that teachers can use to adapt to students'
diverse learning styles and academic needs

help teachers manage

students' behavior.

OVERVIEW

THE 4 MAJOR THEORIES OF LEARNING

behaviourism, cognitivism,
constructivism and
humanism

BEHAVIOURISM

John B. Watson
B.F. Skinner
Ivan Pavlov
Edward Thorndike

FACILITATOR: MINAR PAKPAHAN MARCH 25, 2024

WHAT
Behaviorism is a learning theory based on the
idea that all behaviors are learned through
conditioning, which is shaped by interactions
with the environment.

According to behaviorists, our behaviors are

molded by external factors which is called
environmental stimuli

FACILITATOR: MINAR PAKPAHAN MARCH 25, 2024

WHAT
Strict behaviorists believe that any person—
regardless of genetic background, personality
traits, and internal thoughts— can be trained
to perform any task, within the limits of their
physical capabilities.

It only requires the right conditioning.

Learning Through Association - Classical
Conditioning
This learning process creates a conditioned response through associations:
between an unconditioned stimulus and a neutral stimulus -

Reward and Punishment - Operant Conditioning

This learning process creates a conditioned response through the addition
and removal of stimulus
By forming an association between a certain behavior and the
consequences of that behavior, you learn.

HOW IS BEHAVIORISM USED IN EDUCATION?

Behaviorism can be used to help elicit positive behaviors or

responses in students, such as by using reinforcement.
Teachers with a behavioral approach often use "skill and
drill" exercises to reinforce correct responses through
consistent repetition, for instance.
Praising students for getting the right answer and providing
prizes for those who do well.
Using tests to measure performance enables teachers to
measure observable behaviors and is, therefore, another
behavioral approach
COGNITIVISM

Jean Piaget
Robert Gagne
Lev Vygotsky

WHAT
Cognitive learning theories are based on the
idea that knowledge acquisition occurs when
learners actively engage in problem-solving
activities.
CLT assumes that students learn better when
they use their own thinking skills rather than
being taught facts and procedures.

FACILITATOR: MINAR PAKPAHAN MARCH 25, 2024

WHAT
It emphasizes active learning over passive
learning. Active learning involves students
engaging in meaningful tasks that require
them to apply their own thinking skills.

FACILITATOR: MINAR PAKPAHAN MARCH 25, 2024

The following are the main principles of cognitivism for more
effective human learning in Educational Settings

1. Learning must be purposeful and focused.

2. Learning must be self-directed;
3. Learning must come from Analysis to Discovery.
4. Organising information into Schemas helps
students build conceptual models.
5. Long-term memory is enhanced by enabling
students to organise and encode learning material.
6. Curriculum content must be well-sequenced and
understood in the context of the bigger picture.

CONSTRUCTIVISM

John Dewey
Jerome Bruner
Merrill Lev Vygotsky
Seymour Paper

FACILITATOR: MINAR PAKPAHAN MARCH 25, 2024

WHAT
Constructivism in education is a learning
theory that posits that students learn new
information by building on top of a foundation
of what they’ve already learned

FACILITATOR: MINAR PAKPAHAN MARCH 25, 2024

The Principles of Constructivism

1. Knowledge is constructed rather than innate or

passively absorbed.
2. Learning is an active process.
3. All knowledge is socially constructed.
4. All knowledge is personal.
5. Learning exists in the mind.
6. Motivation drives learning.

HUMANISM

Abraham Harold Maslow

Carl Rogers
James F.T Bugental

FACILITATOR: MINAR PAKPAHAN MARCH 25, 2024

WHAT
This theory states that the student is the
authority on how they learn, and that all of
their needs should be met in order for them to
learn well
It emphasizes the freedom and autonomy of
learners. It connects the ability to learn with
the fulfillment of other needs (building on
Maslow's hierarchy) and the perceived utility
of the knowledge by the learner.
