Eating out-of-date foods can pose health risks due to potential bacterial growth or
spoilage, leading to foodborne illnesses.

If chicken is not properly cooked, harmful bacteria like Salmonella or Campylobacter

may survive, leading to foodborne illness such as food poisoning.
Refrigeration slows bacterial growth in food, preserving freshness and reducing the risk
of foodborne illness by maintaining temperatures that inhibit microbial proliferation and
spoilage.

Sanitizing benches involves thorough cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces using

appropriate products to eliminate germs, maintaining a hygienic environment crucial
for safe food preparation.

Color-coded chopping boards are used to prevent cross-contamination between

different types of food. Each colour represents a specific food group, such as red for
raw meat and blue for raw fish, green for fruits and vegetables, white for cheeses
and breads, brown for cooked meat and purple is for food allergies.

National Health and Medical Research Council (2013) Australian Dietary Guidelines.
Canberra: National Health and Medical Research Council report the following:
Australian Dietary Guidelines:
Guideline 1 To achieve and maintain a healthy weight, be physically active and
choose amounts of nutritious food and drinks to meet your energy needs.
• Children and adolescents should eat sufficient nutritious foods to grow and
develop normally. They should be physically active every day and their growth
should be checked regularly.
Guideline 2 Enjoy a wide
variety of nutritious foods from
these five food groups every
day:
• Plenty of vegetables of
different types and colours,
and legumes/beans
• Fruit
• Grain (cereal) foods, mostly wholegrain
and/or high cereal fibre varieties, such as
breads, cereals, rice, pasta, noodles, polenta,
couscous, oats, quinoa and barley
• Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts
and seeds, and legumes/beans
• Milk, yoghurt, cheese and/or their
alternatives, mostly reduced fat
• And drink plenty of water.

Guideline 3 Limit intake of foods containing

saturated fat, added salt, added sugars and
alcohol
a. Limit intake of foods high in saturated fat
such as many biscuits, cakes, pastries, pies,
processed meats, commercial burgers, pizza, fried foods, potato chips, crisps and
other savoury snacks.
• Replace high fat foods which contain predominately saturated fats such as butter,
cream, cooking margarine, coconut and palm oil with foods which contain

an ice pack if you need to travel more
than half an hour home or if it’s hot
outside. Store your food at home as
soon as you can. • Chill foods in the
fridge to slow growth of micro-
organisms. Keep cool foods cool and
frozen foods frozen.
• Keep fridges at or below 5°C and the
freezer between -15° and -18°C.
• Keep your fridge and freezers clean.
And get rid of those old shrivelled
vegetables, ‘left-overs’ or frozen foods
lurking in the corners for too long!
• Store foods away from cleaning
agents and insecticides.
• If you are not going to eat cooked
dishes and foods straight away, put
them in the fridge as soon as you can.

5 tech innovations that could save us from climate change
New technologies are helping to fight global warming

09 Jan 2017
Alex Gray Formative Content

The year 2016 was historic in many ways. One of its most significant moments
happened when the Paris Agreement on Climate Change came into force.
But tech giant and philanthropist Bill Gates argues that we need much more than a
cut in global emissions to solve our climate problem – "we need an energy miracle,”
he says.
So he, along with some of the world’s richest people, have launched a fund to invest
in solutions driven by technology. It will bring together governments and research
institutions and billionaire investors who will try to limit climate change.
These are five technological innovations that could help them achieve their goal.
Power generation
We already know that nuclear power is a way of producing electricity free of
carbon emissions, but we have yet to harness it in a way that is truly safe and cost-
effective. We may be closer to an answer, however.
Canadian company General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to create a
commercially viable nuclear-fusion-energy power plant.
“Fusion produces zero greenhouse gas emissions, emitting only helium as exhaust. It
also requires less land than other renewable technologies,” says the company.
“Fusion energy is inherently safe, with zero possibility of a meltdown scenario and no
long-lived waste, and there is enough fusion fuel to power the planet for hundreds of
millions of years.”
Transport
Transport represents 23% of global energy-related CO2 emissions. But the demand
for transport is only going to increase.
We have already found alternative ways of powering vehicles, such as with
electricity, but in order to do it on a wide scale, we need much more efficient
batteries and much more efficient battery-charging technology.
Researchers at the University of Surrey say they have made a scientific breakthrough
in this regard. They say they have discovered new materials offering an alternative
to battery power and proven to be between 1,000-10,000 times more powerful than
the existing battery alternative, a supercapacitor.

“The new technology is believed to have the potential for electric cars to travel to
similar distances as petrol cars without the need to stop for lengthy recharging
breaks of between 6 and 8 hours, and instead recharge fully in the time it takes to fill
a regular car with petrol,” says the university.
Image: Beyond Meat
Food
About a quarter of all global emissions
come from feeding the world’s 7 billion
people, and part of that comes from the
consumption of meat. “There is no way
to produce enough meat for 9 billion
people,” said Bill Gates in a 2013 blog
post.
One of the alternatives is to start
producing lab-grown meat, and to
produce meat substitutes that look, taste
and feel like the real thing. It might seem
like the stuff of science fiction, but
companies and investors alike are taking
it very seriously. The company Beyond
Meat, already supported by Bill Gates, has created the world’s first meat burger that
is entirely plant based. It’s made mostly from vegetable protein found in peas.
Manufacturing
Making the things we use every day puts an enormous strain on the climate – about
30% of emissions come from industry.
But what if we could take those CO2 emissions out of the air? Carbon Engineering is
a Canadian start-up which is working on exactly that – taking carbon dioxide
directly from the atmosphere and then using it to produce fuel.
According to the company, “direct air capture can remove far more CO2 per acre
of land footprint than trees and plants”. The company is already running a
demonstration plant in Squamish, British Columbia, that is removing one ton of CO2
from the air every day.

Image: Carbon Engineering

Buildings
The greenhouse gas emissions of buildings is also significant. We need lighting,
power, heating and cooling whether at home or in the office, at school or in a
hospital. The combined emissions from these sources contributes almost 20% of
global emissions.
Part of the answer is to build smarter cities.
That's what a company called Sidewalk Labs (which is part of Alphabet Inc, the
parent of Google) is doing, harnessing digital technologies to solve today’s pressing
urban problems. One of their current projects involves looking at how traffic flows
through a city and how hotspots of congestion might be solved. This could
dramatically reduce air pollution in our cities.
Members of the Breakthrough Energy Coalition (BEC), which numbers among its
members Jeff Bezos from Amazon, Jack Ma from the Ali Baba group and Richard
Branson, have committed to investing more than $1 billion in new technologies over
the next 20 years.

Technology and Society – Impact of
Technology on Society
By Karehka Ramey

November 12, 2012

Impact of technology on society

Technology and human life cannot be separated; society has a cyclical co-
dependence on technology. We use technology; depend on technology in our
daily life and our needs and demands for technology keep on rising. Humans use
technology to travel, to communicate, to learn, to do business and to live in
comfort. However, technology has also caused us concerns. Its poor application has
resulted into the pollution of the environment and it has also cause serious threat to
our lives and society. This calls for proper use of technology. The biggest challenge
facing people is to determine the type of future we need to have and then create
relevant technologies which will simplify the way we do things.

It is impossible to explore how each new advanced technology has impacted our
lives and how it will impact the future. Technology impacts the environment, people
and society as a whole. The way we use technology determines its impact to society
and whether it is positive or negative. For example, we can use corn to make
ethanol and this ethanol can be used as fuel. Fuel can be used to run machines and
cars which will increase on output of manufacturing industries at a lower cost.
However, if we decide to shift large quantities of corn to fuel production from food
production, humans will be left with no food.

Based on the example above, technology by its self is not harmful to society, but the
way society uses technology to achieve specific goals is what results in negative
impacts of technology on society. Humans need to use energy to process products
in factories, to run cars, to light homes and also run technological machines like
computers, but the only way we can do this without affecting the environment and
society, is by shifting from exhaustible energy sources to renewable and
inexhaustible sources like solar/wind energy.

Positive impacts of technology on society:

Modern Agriculture
Technology has mechanized agriculture. Modern agricultural technology allows a
small number of people to grow vast quantities of food in a short period of time with
less input which results into high yields and return on investment. Through
government subsidies, small and medium sized farmers have managed to acquire
ploughing, sowing, watering and harvesting machines. The use of technology in

agriculture has also resulted in the manufacturing of genetic crops which grow
quickly and can be resistant to many pests and diseases. Also, farmers have access
to artificial fertilizers which add value to the soil and boost the growth of their crops
and enable them to produce high quality yields.

Farmers in dry areas have been able to grow healthy crops with advanced water
pumps and sprinklers which derive water from rivers and the process is automated to
save time. A good example is in Egypt, a desert country which receives little rain, but
small and large farmers have used automated sprinklers to irrigate their farms. In
Egypt, they grow a lot of rice, yet this crop needs sufficient water to grow well. The
water is pumped from River Nile to the rice fields on a daily basis.

Technology has improved transportation

Transportation is one of the basic areas of technological activity. Both society and
businesses have benefited from new transportation methods. Transportation
provides mobility for people and goods. Transportation, like all other technologies
can be viewed as a system. It is a series of parts that are interrelated. These parts all
work together to meet a certain goal. Transportation uses vehicles, trains, airplanes,
motorbikes, people, roads, energy, information, materials, finance and time. All
these parts must work together to move and relocate people and goods.

Technology has helped in advancing all four types of transportation and these
include;
(1) road transport
(2) air transport
(3) nautical transportation
(4) space transportation

Technology has improved communication

Communication is used for a number of purposes. Both society and organisations
depend on communication to transfer information. People use technology to
communicate with each other. Electronic medias like radios, televisions, internet,
social media have improved the way we exchange ideas which can develop our
societies. In many countries, radios and televisions are used to voice the concerns of
society. They organize live forums where the community can contribute through
mobile phones or text service systems like Twitter.

Communication technologies like televisions, radios and internet can be used to

persuade, entertain and inform society. Businesses have also used internet and
mobile communication technology to grow and improve their customer service.

Technology has improved education

Education is the backbone of every economy. People need organised educational
infrastructures so that they can learn how to interpret information. Many schools
have integrated educational technologies in their schools with the aim of improving
the way students learn.

Technologies like Smartboards, computers, mobile phones, iPads , projectors and the
internet are being used in classrooms to boost students motivation and learning

capacity. Visual education has proved to be a good method of learning in many
subjects like mathematics, physics, biology.

The business community has invested money in various educational technologies

which can be used by both teachers and their students. For example, on iTunes, you
will find many educational applications which can allow students and teachers
exchange academic information at any time, this has made learning mobile. Also,
programs like long distance education have opened boundaries to so many
scholars around round the world.

Negative Impacts of Technology on Society:

Resource Depletion
The more demand for new technologies and advancement of current technologies,
the more pressure we put on earth’s natural resources. Just looking at the number of
mobile phones and computers being manufactured every day is mind boggling.
Our population is increasing every day and consumers demand mobile phones and
computers. This is good news to manufacturers, like Apple or Samsung, because the
demand for their gadgets is high. However, to sustain this demand, manufacturers
exploit Mother Nature for resources like aluminum. Once these resources are
extracted from the earth plates, they will never return. That means in the future we
may be left with no natural resources for the future generation and economy.

Likewise, intensive farming practices will deplete the soil. This makes heavy
applications of commercial fertilizers necessary to yield healthy harvests, but these
fertilizers have chemicals which are dangerous to the soil and potentially human
lives.

Increased Population
Technology has helped us live longer by improving health facilities and aiding in
research for solutions for most health problems. In developed countries population
growth is controlled by advanced birth control methods, this has helped balance
the population. This is different to developing countries, as the rate at which people
produce is very high, the mortality rate is high, food is scarce and health care is
poor.

Increased Pollution
Pollution affects the land we grow crops on, the water we drink and the air we
breathe. The increased demand for new technologies has resulted in many
manufacturing and processing factories. They release harmful chemicals and gasses
whilst producing goods, which have polluted our environment, and this has
contributed to climate changes.

To put it into perspective the more technology we enjoy, the more we harm our
environment. Experts have tried to implement ways of reducing this impact by
encouraging factories to go green. To a small extent this has been
achieved through the development of green technologies like; electric cars, low
electricity appliances and water saving devices. There is still a long way to go,
however, to reduce the pollution of the air and the earth and replenish our natural
resources.

Summary

Technology plays an integral role in modern society, significantly impacting various

aspects of our lives. Positively, technological advancements in agriculture have

revolutionized food production, enabling higher yields, better crop quality, and

efficient resource utilization. Communication technologies like the internet, social

media, and mobile devices have transformed how we interact, exchange

information, and conduct business globally. Education has also benefited from

technology, with digital tools enhancing learning experiences and accessibility to

knowledge.

However, alongside these benefits come significant challenges. The rapid pace of

technological innovation leads to resource depletion, especially in the case of non-

renewable resources like metals and minerals. Increased pollution from

manufacturing processes and energy consumption poses threats to environmental

sustainability and public health. Furthermore, the unchecked growth in technology

can exacerbate population challenges and social inequalities, particularly in

developing regions.

Balancing technological progress with environmental conservation and equitable

societal development is essential for a sustainable future. Implementing green

technologies, promoting responsible consumption, and fostering innovation for

social good are key strategies in navigating these complexities.
