Lumitron Corporation has been supplying high quality lighting components to the aerospace
industry for over thirty five years. We have a long history of designing and manufacturing best-in-
class commercial and military specification (MS) type subminiature lamps (MIL-DTL-6363,
MS24515, MS3338, MS90451, MS90452, MS24367, MS27571, MS25237) and other lighting
components commonly used in integrally illuminated panels and instruments.
This catalog describes Lumitron lighting components designed for both military and civil
applications including night vision environments. The first part covers lighting components
designed for integrally illuminated instruments and panels using incandescent light sources. This
includes our glass and PolyVision (high temperature polymeric) ring filters and ring filter/lamp
assemblies. The second portion covers our line of LED lighting components including our full range
of NVIS PolyVision optical filters for both thru-hole and SMD type LEDs and our LED/filter
assemblies.
Our mission is to offer cost-effective lighting components that add value to our customers’ products.
Our goal is to continually innovate so that we may offer products that will provide simple and cost-
effective solutions to lighting challenges such as NVIS compliance.
Our lighting lab allows us to measure a variety of spectral and photometric attributes such as
chromaticity and radiance in order to verify compliance to MIL-L-85762A, MIL-STD-3009, SAE-
AS25050 and other lighting standards. Test data is always available upon request.
We also have our own in-house CNC machining center where we build precision optical filters for
both incandescent and LED light sources. Since we design and machine our own optical filters we
have virtually infinite design capabilities with little or no setup costs and relatively short lead times.
Our CNC machining center can be put to work for you to build prototypes or production runs of all
types of optical filters and components for lighting applications.
We have more products in the pipeline, and are always open to new design ideas, so don’t hesitate
to contact us with your current lighting component requirements.
Please visit our web site (www.lumitron.com) for additional information about our complete product
line of subminiature lamps, LED lamp replacements, and new product announcements.
All nighttime military, law enforcement, and emergency medical operations require some form of
effective visual enhancement. Night vision goggles (NVGs) are viewing devices that amplify near
infrared light, (i.e., night sky radiation and other near IR sources) projecting it on a small green
phosphor display. The current generation of NVGs (GEN III) has met the challenge of enhancing
visibility to the level necessary for nighttime avionic, ground, and shipboard operations through
increased sensitivity in the NIR spectrums from approximately 610nm to 930nm.
Instrument sensitivity presents a compatibility problem with ancillary display systems. Surrounding
displays illuminated with unfiltered incandescent lamps or LEDs (light emitting diodes) can interfere
with NVGs because they can emit significant energy in the infrared (IR) region of the spectrum.
Excess IR radiation can cause conflicts with NVG night vision functionality. For example, IR
interference can cause night vision goggles to bloom (creating a halo-like glow around the displays
and reducing visibility), create ghosting images (IR reflections from the cockpit canopy), or goggle
sensitivity loss due to activation of the automatic gain control because of higher levels of IR.
The illumination of some crew station displays generates enough energy in the NVG’s response
spectrum to affect the goggles automatic gain control. The gain will lower in response due to the
display noise thereby lowering the sensitivity of the goggles to the outside environment.
The solution is to filter the light source so that it emits the necessary light for proper operation in
night environments while attenuating levels of near IR radiation (i.e., removing the component that
falls within the NVIS response curve).
MIL-L-85762A and MIL-STD-3009 establishes the spectral requirements for Night Vision Imaging
System (NVIS) compliant aircraft interior lighting.
MIL-L-85762A and MIL-STD-3009 describe the color limits and NVIS radiance required for various
NVIS compliant lighting components. These standards divide NVIS compatible lighting into the
following types and classes: Type I lighting is compatible with any direct view image NVIS utilizing
Generation III image intensifier tubes. Type II lighting is compatible with any projected image
utilizing Generation III image intensifier tubes.
Class A, Class B, and Class C NVIS refer to the type of objective lens used in the NVGs per the
system specification requirements of the intended aircraft. Please note that NVIS Class A and B
are often confused with NVIS Green A or NVIS Green B NVIS color limits. Below is a 1976 CIE
diagram of NVIS color limits:
SAE-AS25050
Aerospace Standard SAE-AS25050 (replacing MIL-C-25050A) calls out the general requirements
and aviation color limits used in aeronautical Instrument and Panel Lighting (IPL):
Incandescent subminiature lamps typically used in integrally illuminated instruments and panels
have a broad emission throughout the visible spectrum. However, the majority of the radiated
energy lies in the infrared region. Filament energy emissions vary over a very broad wavelength
range extending from 400 nm in the visible (blue) region to 10,000 nm in the far infrared. Typical
color temperatures for low wattage subminiature lamps range from 1850K – 2275K. Lumitron offers
a complete product line of fully compliant NVIS Glass and PolyVision optical filters and lamp
assemblies designed specifically for filtering incandescent light sources for MIL-L-85762A, MIL-
STD-3009, and SAE-AS25050 compliance.
Our filtered based and flexible lead lamp assemblies are constructed with aerospace grade
materials and best-in-class MIL-DTL-6363 military specification subminiature lamps.
NVIS compatibility is typically achieved when the glass is core drilled to a wall thickness of 0.040
(1.0 mm). Lumitron NVIS Glass filters and lamp assemblies are supplied by default with polished
surfaces inside and out for maximum light transmission. Matte finish surfaces are also available.
Ordering Information
Ring filters are polished by default. Add “-M” to part number for matte finish
“F” in part number designates monolithic construction (no heat sink)
Monolithic Glass Construction for 360° Top and Side Light Emissions
NVIS glass ring filters are polished inside and out by default for maximum transmission.
NVIS ring filter lamps are subject to some degree of abbreviated life from the rated life of the
lamp. Performance and life of ring filter lamp assemblies are directly related to the environment
in which they operate. Suitability for specific applications must be determined by the user.
Blue highlighted lamp part numbers correspond with blue highlighted lamp due to size
constraints.
Ordering information
For matte finish add “-M” to part number before lamp designation (L-43130-125-M-7152).
XX - The first two numbers designate the filter color per the Filter Color Table (43=NVIS Green A)
xxxx - The last four numbers designate the lamp type per Lamp Table (6153=T-¾ 5V, 60mA Lamp)
Example: L-43105-160-6153 is an NVIS Green A ring filter lamp, Ø 0.185 (4.7), 0.160 (4.1) overall length,
5V, 60 mA
PolyVision is a high temperature polymeric (HTP) optical filter material engineered specifically for
filtering various light sources for NVIS and aviation color crew station lighting compliance.
PolyVision allows for greater design flexibility and shorter lead times while meeting fully compliant
NVIS lighting requirements.
Precision in-house machining of PolyVision optical filters eliminates many of the constraints of glass
fabrication or injection molding and allows for virtually infinite design flexibility with no significant
tooling cost.
Contact us for custom design solutions to meet your dimensional requirements. Please note that
our PolyVision optical filters are subject to the following thermal constraints: Intermittent Use
Temperature: 190°C - Extended Use Temperature: 120°C.

Our PolyVision optical filter material for LEDs is engineered to meet the lighting and color
requirements of industry wide lighting standards such MIL-L-85762A, MIL-STD-3009, and SAE-
AS25050. Filter material formulation is tailored to each LED light source to optimize the spectral
output of the light emission.
Filtering LEDs or LED arrays can create significant cost efficiencies versus filtering the entire front
panel of a display because much less optical material is used. And integrally filtered displays are
generally not subject to light leakage from exterior damage. Our LED optical filters and assemblies
are widely used in aerospace. Many are available on tape and reel for automated installation.

Material List
Light Baffle
Syringe with 25 gauge steel tip
3M DP270 Black or equivalent
Procedure
1) Begin with filter/SMD LED assemblies soldered to board. Board should be free of residual flux,
dirt, and debris.
2) Using a syringe, or robotic dispenser, apply a thin bead of black adhesive to the board around the
perimeter of each filter/SMD LED assembly. Take care to avoid applying excessive adhesive.
3) Using tweezers, or pick-and-place device, lower the light baffle down over the filter/SMD LED
assembly and press into place until the bottom of the baffle is set into the epoxy bead.
4) Allow adhesive to fully cure per manufacturer specifications. Energize and check for light leakage.
