LIFE CYCLE THINKING
POLA PIKIR DAUR HIDUP
• Life cycle thinking provides a holistic framework taking the entire system of a
product, process or service into account, enabling us to make realistic choices
for the longer term taking multiple factors into account.
• Life cycle thinking expands the traditional focus on manufacturing processes
to incorporate various aspects associated with a product over its entire life
cycle.
• Considering all stages in the product life cycle as a whole and aims to
maximize product performances throughout the entire product life cycle.
• The producer becomes responsible for the products from cradle to grave and
has, for instance, to develop products with improved performance in all
phases of the product life cycle.
• Analysis & decision have to encompass the interest of employees, society, and
environment; bring the concepts of externalities and company social
responsibility.
11
11
• Goal of life cycle thinking is to reduce resource use and emissions from/to the
environment.
• Companies can achieve cleaner products and processes, a competitive
advantage in the marketplace, and an improved platform to meet the needs of
a changing business climate.

Objective SUSTAINABILITY
Explanation:
OHSAS = Occupational Health And Safety POEMS = Product Oriented Environmental Management System,
TQM = Total Quality Management EFQM = European Foundation for Quality Management
LCA = Life Cycle Assessment, EMA = Environmental Management Accounting
LCC = Life Cycle Cost Analysis. 13

LIFE CYCLE MANAGEMENT
MANAJEMEN DAUR HIDUP
• LCE aims to design or to re-design a product with lower ecological impacts at the
same or better quality as the original design at an affordable price.
• LCA aims to assess the environmental impacts of a product throughout the product
life cycle and to spot the worse environmental performance along the life cycle.
• LCC assesses all cost components during the entire product life & comprises beyond
four walls and includes Triple Bottom Line (TBL) system.
• PDM aims to organize information regarding a product in such a way in order to
support the decision in the first three areas of LCM (LCE, LCA, and LCC). The main idea
of PDM is to extend the information coverage or the knowledge of a firm towards a
product beyond the company’s wall. It brings suppliers, distributors’, retailers’, and
consumers’ data together.
• Technical Support emphasizes more on know-how related to disassembly and other
technical aspects of a product. To be more efficient, the technical knowledge needs to
be delegated to customers as well in the form of partial disassembly of a product, self-
diagnosing and maintaining of a minor failure, and other know-how

Wal-Mart
• To be supplied 100% by renewable energy, existing stores 25%
more efficient in 7 years, new stores 30% more efficient in 4
years.
• To create zero waste, have a 25% reduction in solid waste in 3
years, all private brand packaging improved in 2 years
• To sell products that sustain resources & environment, to
design and support green company program in China

IKEA
• Making assemble-it-yourself furnitures that lower supply-
chain costs by dramatically reducing the environmental
impact and financial costs of its product distribution
• Striving for “flat packaging” that enables IKEA pack its trucks
and trains much more compactly and increase its fill rate as
much as 50 percent & decrease in fuel consumption by as
much as 15 percent
• Redesigning its products (e.g. IKEA trimmed three
centimeters from a box for a sofa, enabling it to fit four more
sofas on a trailer)

LIFE CYCLE MANAGEMENT
PENILAIAN DAUR HIDUP
• A compilation and evaluation of the inputs and
outputs and the potential environmental
impacts of a product system through its life
cycle.
• A tool for a systematic evaluation of the
environmental aspects of a product or service
system through all stages of its life cycle.
• Provides an adequate instrument for
environmental decision support.
• Reliable LCA performance is crucial to achieve a
life-cycle economy.
• The International Organization for
Standardization (ISO), has standardized this
framework within the series ISO 14040 on LCA.

Measurement is the first step that leads to
control & eventually to improvement.
If you can’t measure something, you can’t
understand it.
If you can’t understand it, you can’t control it.
If you can’t control it, you can’t improve it.
(H. James Harrington)
