B. Answer the following questions with reference to context.

1. a) The huntsman said this to Hans.

b) The valuable thing was a pellet, made from leftover bread crumbs, which would later help Hans access
the sparkling golden water.
c) The huntsman was happy and grateful that Hans had sacrificed his dinner with him. The huntsman
wanted to reciprocate Hans’s kindness.

2. a) Fritz and Franz are referred to here.

b) Fritz and Franz had gone in search of the sparkling golden water. They met the guardian of the water,
a huge unicorn with a golden horn, who asked them why they wanted the water. They gave selfish
answers to the question. So the unicorn tossed them into the hollow of a tree where they were imprisoned.
c) No, they were selfish and self-centred people, and did not know any other way to behave.

C. Answer the following questions briefly.

1. Hans lived with his mother and brothers, Fritz and Franz, in poverty in a hut in the forest. They did not
have much to eat. Dry black bread with potatoes and lentils with a little porridge now and then was their
staple meal. No, it had not always been like this. The family was well off once; they had enough to eat
every day, and they lived in a comfortable house. Things changed when their father lost his money in
business. Things worsened after he died.

2. The stranger was hungry and wanted some food and water. Fritz and Franz gave him a scowling glance
and refused to share their food with him. Hans, on the other hand, was hospitable to the stranger. He
politely invited the visitor to sit down, and provided him with water and food. Hans did not mind the
stranger eating even Hans’ share of the food.

3. The stranger told the secret of the sparkling golden water which turns everything it touched into gold.
Both Franz and Fritz wanted to get that water for themselves. They quarrelled about who would go to get
the water. Finally, it was decided that Fritz would go first to find the sparkling golden water because he
was the eldest.

4. In the vast forest of dead trees, a terrible sound of neighing and screaming came and a huge unicorn
with a golden horn on his forehead appeared. The unicorn was in charge of the water. He asked Fritz what
he was seeking. Fritz replied that he sought the sparkling golden water to get money to buy land and
become a count. The unicorn became angry with the answer and tossed Fritz into the branches of a dead
hollow tree and Fritz was imprisoned there. When Fritz did not return home, Franz set out in search of the
sparkling golden water. He, too, reached the same spot, and told the unicorn he wanted to buy a house and
burgomastership. The unicorn tossed him just as Fritz, and Franz was also imprisoned too.

5. Unlike his brothers, Hans was not greedy or selfish. He told the unicorn that he had come to find his
brothers and that he wanted the water to buy food and comfort for his mother. Hans also had with him the
pellet which actually was a crystal ball needed to make the unicorn listen to his commands. So, the
unicorn took him to the sparkling golden water. The unicorn did not take Hans’ brothers with him to the
water. He knew Hans’ brothers were selfish and would misuse the water. So, he said that only the owner
of the crystal ball could go there.
