Service Bulletin No. 631B supersedes and voids Service Bulletin No. 631A, dated
May 30, 1980.

This Service Bulletin is divided into two (2) PARTS. Each PART must be complied with.

Subject: Battery Protection and Correct Rear Seat


Installation

Reason for Revision: Revise Serial Numbers Affected; revise Purpose;


add Kit; revise Instructions; revise Material
Required.

PA-28-151 Warrior 28-7415001through 28-7715314


PA-28-161 Warrior II 28-7716001through 28-8216066

Compliance Time : PART I: Before further flight.


PART II: Within the next fifty (50) hours
of operation.

Purpose : On the above affected aircraft, the battery box is located


beneath the rear seat. Reports have been received of the seat base springs contacting
and chafing the battery box cover, and of the seat base springs contacting the battery
terminals.

If this condition occurs, electrical system failure, arcing and/or a fire could result.

PART I of this Service Bulletin provides instructions for inspection of the affected area,
as well as a temporary restriction to operation of the aircraft.

PART II of this Service Bulletin announces the availability of a kit that when installed
will prevent the conditions described above from occurring.

Compliance Time : Before further flight.

Instructions :

1. Gain access to the battery box and underside of rear seat.


2. Inspect for damage to battery box top. If damaged, replace. See Material Required.
3. Inspect seat springs for damage, signs of overheating, arcing or broken springs.
If any of the conditions described in this Instruction are evident, repair or replace
as required.
4. Ensure that rear seat aft legs are fully engaged in rubber saddle clamps and that
forward legs contact the approximate lateral center line of the spar box cap.
5. Fabricate and install in full view of the pilot a placard with the following wording:

Warning : Operation with rear seat occurpied is prohibited.


Refer to Piper Service Bulletin No. 631B.

NOTE : Aircraft with the following Serial Numbers are NOT affected by this
Instruction no. 5 : 28-7916211 through 28-8216066.

6. Make appropriate logbook entry of compliance with PART I of this Service Bulletin.

Material Required: One (1) each Battery Box Cover, Piper Part Number 35201-00V
or 35201-03V.

PART II

Compliance Time: Within the next fifty (50) hours of operation.

Instructions : All instructions necessary to fabricate and/or install the aft


seat bottom modification are contained in the Aft Seat Bottom Modification Kit, Piper
Part Number 764 303V.

NOTE : The material contained in Piper Kit 764 303V is, in most situations,
available from local sources. It is permissible to fabricate and/or
obtain necessary parts locally and to accomplish the modification in
accordance with the attached Sketch/Instruction data.

Material Required: One (1) each Aft Seat Bottom Modification Kit, Piper Part Number
764 303V, per aircraft or components specified on attached Sketch/Instruction data.

Availability of Parts: Your Piper Field Service Facility or a local supplier.

Effectivity Date: This Service Bulletin is effective upon receipt.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Remove perforated aluminum panel from rear aft bottom seat.


2. Remove (4) bolts securing back of seat to bottom of seat.
3. Remove seat by lifting back and disengage seat from saddle clamps.
4. Install 87438-02 board as indicated.

NOTES :
1. If rubber bumper 65055-00 is not available fabricate a wood dowel as shown on
Figure 1, Sheet 3.
2. If board 87438-02 is not available fabricate a board using exterior 5 ply plywood
grade AC, 1/2 inch thickness as shown on Figure 1.
3. If Service Bulletin No. 631A has not been complied with, refer to Figure 2 for
installation of 35669-194 placard. If placard is not available it may be duplicated
or painted with white paint on black paint background as shown in Figure 3.
4. Enter new weight and balance in the Weight & Balance Section of the Airplane Flight
Manual, “Weight, Arm and Moment of Piper Kit Modification 764 303V”.

Weight: 2 lbs . Arm: 113.6” Moment: 227 in. lbs .

5. Remove temporary restriction placard installed in accordance with PART I of


Service Bulletin 631B.
6. Make proper Logbook entry of compliance.
