Course Objective
The course is designed to give fundamental knowledge, relevant technologies and design aspects of various thermal systems
used in engineering.

Course Outcome
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. explain concept of design optimization. ( BL-2 )

2. discuss consideration in design problems. ( BL-2 )

3. develop model of system. ( BL-6 )

4. explain formulation of problem. ( BL-2 )

Part of Engineering Enterprise: Need or Opportunity, Evaluation and Market Analysis, Feasibility and
Chances of Success, Engineering Design, Research and Development, Need for Optimization,
Fabrication, Testing, and Production, Thermal Systems.

2 Basic Considerations in Design 8 hr 20 %

Formulation of the Design Problem: Requirements and Specifications, Given Quantities, Design
Variables, Constraints or Limitations, Additional Considerations, Conceptual Design, Steps in the Design
Process, Computer-Aided Design, Material Selection.

3 Modeling of Thermal Systems 9 hr 20 %

Introduction: Importance of Modeling in Design, Basic Features of Modeling, Types of Models: Analog
Models, Mathematical Models, Physical Models, Numerical Models, Mathematical Modeling, Physical
Modeling and Dimensional Analysis, Curve Fitting.

4 Problem Formulation for Optimization 9 hr 20 %

Introduction: Optimization in Design, Final Optimized Design, Basic Concepts: Objective Function,
Constraints, Operating Conditions Versus Hardware, Mathematical Formulation, Optimization Methods,
Optimization of Thermal Systems, Practical Aspects in Optimal Design.

5 Economic Considerations 9 hr 20 %

Introduction, Calculation of Interest: Simple Interest, Compound Interest, Continuous Compounding,


Effective Interest Rate, Worth of Money as a Function of Time, Series of Payments, Raising Capital,
Taxes, Economic Factor in Design, Application to Thermal Systems.
