RECITATION 5

Q1. The 2 kg sphere is projected horizontally

with a velocity of 10 m/s against 5 kg carriage.
The carriage is initially at rest and is on rollers no
that it may move freely in the horizontal
direction. If coefficient of restitution e=0.8,
determine the velocities of the sphere and the
carriage immediately after impact. Assume all
surfaces as frictionless. Also, find the rebound
angle of the sphere.

Solution:

Sphere: Momentum is conserved in t-t direction (direction parallel to inclined surface)

𝑡2
𝑚𝐵 𝑣𝐵 + ∑ ∫ 𝐹𝑑𝑡 = 𝑚. 𝑣𝐵 ′
𝑡1

In t-t direction:
𝑚𝐵 (10𝑐𝑜𝑠60) + 0 = 𝑚. 𝑣𝐵 ′ 𝑡 ==> 𝑣𝐵 ′ 𝑡 = 5𝑚/𝑠 (1)

Carriage & Sphere:

𝑡2
𝑚𝐵 𝑣𝐵 + ∑ ∫ 𝐹𝑑𝑡 = 𝑚𝐴 . 𝑣𝐴 ′ + 𝑚𝐵 . 𝑣𝐵 ′
𝑡1

In x direction:

0 − 2𝑥10 = −5. 𝑣𝐴 ′ − 2. 𝑣𝐵 ′ 𝑡 𝑠𝑖𝑛30 + 2. 𝑣𝐵 ′ 𝑛 𝑐𝑜𝑠30

Using (1) (𝑣𝐵 ′ 𝑡 = 5𝑚/𝑠);

5. 𝑣𝐴 ′ − √3. 𝑣𝐵 ′ 𝑛 = 15 (2)

In n-n direction using coefficient of restitution, e:

𝑣𝐵 ′ 𝑛 − 𝑣𝐴 ′ 𝑛
𝑒= ==> 𝑣𝐵 ′ 𝑛 = (−𝑣𝐴 ′ 𝑐𝑜𝑠30) + 0.8(0 + 10(𝑐𝑜𝑠30))
𝑣𝐴 𝑛 − 𝑣𝐵 𝑛

𝑣𝐵 ′ 𝑛 = 8𝑐𝑜𝑠30 − 𝑣𝐴 ′ 𝑐𝑜𝑠30 (3)

Solving (2) & (3), simultaneously:

12 √3 ′
5. 𝑣𝐴 ′ − √3. ( − 𝑣 ) = 15 ==> 𝑣𝐴 ′ = 4.1538 𝑚/𝑠
√3 2 𝐴

𝑣𝐵 ′ 𝑛 = 8𝑐𝑜𝑠30 − (4.1538). 𝑐𝑜𝑠30 ==> 𝑣𝐵 ′ 𝑛 = 3.3309𝑚/𝑠

Answer: 𝑣𝐴 ′ = 4.1538 𝑚/𝑠 , 𝑣𝐵 ′ = √𝑣𝐵 ′ 𝑛 2 + 𝑣𝐵 ′ 𝑡 2 = 6.0079 𝑚/𝑠

REBOUND ANGLES:
5
𝑡𝑎𝑛𝜃 = = 1.5 ==> 𝜃 = 56.3𝑜 𝑅𝑒𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒: 56.3 + 30 = 86.30
3.3309
