DUBAI GEM PRIVATE SCHOOL

YEAR 13 M1 RP1 CHAPTER 2 CONSTANT ACCELERATION 30 MARKS

1.A particle, P, is projected vertically upwards with speed U from a fixed-

point O. At the instant when P reaches its greatest height H above O, a
second particle, Q, is projected with speed 1 /3 U vertically upwards from
O.
(a) Find H in terms of U and g. (2)

(b) Find, in terms of U and g, the time between the instant when Q is
projected and the instant when the two particles collide. (5)

(c) Find where the two particles collide. (3)

2. A student attempts to sketch the acceleration-time graph of a parachutist
who jumps from a plane at a height of 3800 m above the ground.
The student assumes that the parachutist falls freely from rest under
gravity until she is 480 m from the ground at which point she opens her
parachute. The student makes the assumption that, at this point, the
velocity of the parachutist is immediately reduced to a value which remains
constant until she reaches the ground 140 seconds after she left the plane.

The student decides to ignore air resistance and his sketch is shown in
Figure above. The value t1 is used by the student to denote the time at
which the parachute is opened.
Using the model proposed by the student, calculate
(a) the speed of the parachutist immediately before she opens her
parachute. (3)

(b) the value of t1. (3)

(c) the speed of the parachutist after the parachute is opened. (2)
3. Two trains M and N are moving in the same direction along
parallel straight horizontal tracks. At time t = 0, M overtakes N
whilst they are travelling with speeds 42 m s–1 and 33 m s–1
respectively. Train M overtakes train N as they pass a point X at the
side of the tracks.

After overtaking N, train M maintains its speed of 42 m s–1 for T

seconds and then decelerates uniformly, coming to rest next to a
point Y at the side of the tracks. After being overtaken, train N
maintains its speed of 33 m s–1 for 35 s and then decelerates
uniformly, also coming to rest next to the point Y. The times taken by
the trains to travel between X and Y are the same.

(a) Sketch, on the same diagram, the speed-time graphs for the
motions of the two trains between X and Y. (4)

Given that XY = 1875 m,

(b) find the value of T. (6)
(c) Plot acceleration- time for train M. (2)
