Summary

● Animals have been used as a means of transport for a very long time.
● Elephants, camels and horses were used to travel over long distances.
● Animals like horses, oxen, bulls, camels and donkeys are used to carry loads and to pull carts.
● Animals that carry people are called mounts. For eg: horses, camels, ponies, donkeys etc.
● Animals that carry heavy loads on their backs are called pack animals. For eg: bullocks, yaks, oxen
etc.
● Animals that are used for pulling heavy loads are called draught animals.
● Farmers use oxen to plough fields and to draw water from wells for irrigation.
● Some animals are used on special occasions. For eg: Elephants are used for temple processions
and on several festive occasions.
● A horseshoe is a U-shaped metal strip nailed or glued to the hooves of horses and some draught
animals.
● Horseshoe is used to protect their feet and prevent any wear and tear of the animal’s hooves.
● Horseshoes are considered to be good luck charms in many cultures.
● We should take good care of animals and be sensitive to their needs.

A1. Animals that are used to carry heavy loads are called pack animals. For example, oxen and bullocks.

Q2. Why are yaks used to carry loads in the hilly regions?

A2. Yaks are used to carry loads in the Himalayan region because they are strong and can bear the extreme
cold weather of the region.

Q3. Why do people ride on elephants in wildlife sanctuaries?

A3. People ride on elephants in wildlife sanctuaries and forts because their rides are comfortable and they
also provide a good view of the surroundings.
Q4. What is a horseshoe? How does it help a draught animal?

A4. A horseshoe is a U-shaped metal strip nailed or glued to the hooves of horses and some other draught
animals. The hooves of these animals can get damaged during long hours of work in rough and rocky soils.
That is why the horseshoes are nailed to protect their hoofs. They are also used as a good luck charm in
many cultures.

A5. Three ways in which we can take care of animals are as follows.

● We should not hit or tease animals.


● We should take them to a veterinary doctor if they get hurt or fall sick.
● We should provide them with clean food and water.
