In a hole and shaft assembly of 30mm nominal size, the tolerances for hole and shaft are as
+0.002 −0.00 +0.002 −0.00
specified below: Hole: 30 mm Shaft: 30 mm
Determine: i) Maximum and minimum clearance obtainable; ii) Allowance; iii) Hole and shaft
tolerance; iv) The type of fit. L5 CO1 10M

Tolerances for a hole and shaft assembly having a nominal size of 50 mm are as follows:
+0.02 +0.00 −0.05 −0.08
Hole = 50 mm and shaft = 50 mm
Determine the following:
(i) Maximum and minimum clearances, (ii) Tolerances on shaft and hole, (iii) Allowance, (iv)
MML of hole and shaft, (v) Type of fi t

Calculate the limits of tolerance and allowance for a 25 mm shaft and hole pair designated H8d9,
given:

(i) i (micron) =0.45 𝐷 + 0.0001D, (D is in mm)
(ii) upper deviation of d shaft = -16 D0.44
(ill) 25 mm falls in the diameter step of 18 mm to 30 mm.
(iv) IT8 = 25i

Design the general type of GO and NO GO gauge for components having 30H7/f8 fit Given that
(i) i = 0.453D(l/3) +0.001D
(ii) Upper deviation of shaft = -5.51D(0.41)
(iii) 30mm falls in the diameter step of 18-30 mm
(iv) IT7 = 16i
(v) IT8 = 25i
(vi) Wear allowance = 10% of gauge tolerance
In measuring the diameter D of a bore by four balls (3 balls diameter of diameter D1 and the
fourth one of diameter D2) placed over them, the height from the flat surface to the top of the ball
of diameter D2 is measured to be H. Show that
D = D1 + 2{H (D1 + D2) – H2}1/2
Also show that for the success of the method, (2D1 + D2) should be greater than D for accuracy
of results,
D1+ 0.41 D2 should be less than 0.58D.

A 50 mm diameter shaft is made to rotate in the bush. The tolerances for both shaft and bush are
0.050 mm. Determine the dimension of the shaft and the bush to give a maximum clearance of
0.075 mm with the hole basis system. 5

A hole and mating shaft are to have a nominal assembly size of 40 mm. The assembly is to have
a maximum clearance of 0.15 mm and a minimum clearance of 0.05 mm. The hole tolerance is
1.5 times the shaft tolerance. Determine the limits of both hole and shaft: By using (i) Hole basis
system, (ii) Shaft basis system. 5

Between two mating parts of 100 mm basic size, the actual interference fit is to be from 0.05mm
to 0.12mm. The tolerance for hole is the same as the tolerance for the shaft. Find the size of the
shaft and the hole on (a) hole basis unilateral system b) Shaft basis unilateral system.

A 30 mm diameter hole is made on a turret lathe according to the limits 30.035 mm and 30 mm.
The following two grades of shaft are used to fit in the whole (a) diameter 29.955 mm and
29.924 mm, (b) diameter 30.055 mm and 30.050 mm. Calculate the maximum tolerance,
clearance and indicate the type of fit in each case by a sketch. 5

Determine the dimensions and tolerances of shaft and hole having size of 30 H7h8 fit. Also
determine the allowance i.e. minimum clearance and maximum clearance.
