COURSE NAME: Physics for Instrumentation


COURSE CODE: PHYS1160

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Basic physical principles, laws and mathematical relationships relating to basic mechanics, optics and fluids. Topics include unit
conversions, translational and rotational motion, Hooke's Law, conservation of energy and momentum, electromagnetic radiation,
waves, refraction and reflection, density, gas laws, ideal and real gas laws, compressibility, partial pressures, dynamic and
kinematic viscosity, conservation of energy, Bernoulli's equation, conservation of mass, rate of flow in pipes, Reynolds number,
conduction, convection and radiation of thermal energy, thermal conductivity, and thermal resistance.

Course Credits: 3.00

OUTCOME Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to

1 Calculate linear and rotational motion problems.

The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
• Analyze and perform conversion calculations involving SI and USCS units.
• Perform Vector addition calculations involving polar and rectangular notation.
• Analyze and calculate translational motion problems.
• Analyze and calculate problems involving angular and tangential quantities.

2 Analyze and apply Newton's laws to static and dynamic problems.

The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
• Analyze and apply Newton's Laws of Motion.
• Analyze and calculate problems involving Inertia, and gravitaion.
• Analyze and calculate problems involving friction and static equilibrium.
• Analyze and calculate problems involving torque, moments and center of mass.
• Analyze and calculate problems involving centripetal acceleration, frequency and balancing
rotating masses.
• Analyze and calculate problems involving kinetic and potential energy.

3 Apply energy concepts to solve problems involving statics and dynamics.

The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
• Analyze and calculate problems involving Hooke's law for an ideal spring
• Analyze and calculate problems involving conservation of energy.
• Analyze and calculate problems involving rotational motion and inertia.
• Analyze and calculate problems involving conservation of linear and angular momentum.
• Analyze and calculate problems involving simple machines (gears and levers).
• Analyze and calculate problems involving work performed on other bodies.

4 Analyze and calculate problems involving general wave theory, sound and electromagnetic waves.

The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
• Analyze the differences between transverse and logitudinal waves.
• Analyze and calculate problems involving reflection and refraction.
• Analyze and perform calculations involving interference and diffraction.
• Analyze and calculate problems involving standing waves, the Doppler effect, and resonance.
• Analyze and perform calculations involving the frequency and velocity of sound waves.
• Analyze and calculate problems involving electromagnetic radiation, critical angle and total
internal reflection.

5 Analyze the physical properties of fluids.

The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
• Analyze and perform calculations involving the density of fluids.
• Analyze and perform calculations involving the real gas law and the ideal gas law.
• Analyze and perform calculations involving the compressibility of fluids utilizing the Redlich-
Kwong compressibility equation and compressibility charts.
• Analyze and perform calculations involving Dalton's law of partial pressures and gas mixtures.

6 Apply energy and mass concepts to solve problems involving fluid flow.

The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
• Analyze and perform calculations involving Dynamic and Kinematic viscosity.
• Analyze and perform calculations involving the Reynolds number.
• Analyze and perform calculations involving mass rate of flow and volume rate of flow in pipes.

7 Analyze and solve problems involving the transfer of thermal energy.

The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
• Analyze and perform calculations involving conduction, convection and radiation.
• Analyze and perform calculations relating to thermal conduction and thermal resistance.

DELIVERY METHOD
This course will be taught using a variety of delivery methods which may include face-to-face, online, or blended teaching
platforms. Activities such as collaborative exercises/assignments, seminars, labs, discussion, audio/visual presentations, case
studies, and practicums may be used to support learning.
