As discussed during class the case, Google’s Dragon y: The Ethics of Providing a Censored
Search Engine in China.

Case Synopsis

In 2018, a Google employee leaked that the world’s largest search engine was a emp ng to
provide its services to China censored by the Communist Party. Google employees
demanded explana ons, protested, and even resigned over the secret Project Dragon y.
One whistleblower was mo vated by moral concerns and lack of public scru ny: “I’m against
large companies and governments collabora ng in the oppression of their people.”

Q1. In Two parts (50%)

Part A – How would a U litarian evaluate the Dragon y program?

Part B - A famous saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Then- should you
always adapt to local rules? Could the conclusion depend on the type of u litarian
framework you use (Act U litarian vs Rule U litarian)

Q2. How could How could Google Leadership have communicated as ethical defense for
DragonFly? (25%)

Q3. Should a Google employee voice concerns about Dragon y internally, go public, or
resign in case of disagreement with the project? Could this choice depend on whether, and
through which process, Google reached an ethical evalua on of the program. (25%)
