Safety Inspections

A safety inspection is an on-site walk through to identify potential hazards to occupants and personnel
and options for remedial action. Safety inspections are also important for property insurance issues. A
review of safety equipment (Emergency eyewash, shower, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, etc.) is also
completed to verify proper working order.

After completion of a safety inspection, the responsible area supervisor, building coordinator, campus
facilities maintenance and appropriate personnel is contacted for remedial action. These actions prevent
future incidents, injury/illness, or property/equipment damage.

What Do Safety Inspections Focus On?

General safety inspections are conducted by the Safety Representative or the Assistant Fire Marshal and
focus on the NFPA Life Safety Code 101, which "provides minimum requirements for the design,
operation, and maintenance of buildings and other structures for safety to life from fire and similar
emergencies." This includes, but is not limited to, points of egress, electrical concerns, and storage
issues.

Periodic self-inspections (PDF) of your work area will prevent injury/illness and will maintain a safe work
environment.

What Kinds of Inspections are Performed by EHS?

Different branches of EHS inspect several areas on campus for different reasons:

Hazardous Materials Management inspects areas using and storing hazardous materials.

Radiation Safety inspects areas using and storing radioactive materials.

There are also property insurance inspections, food safety inspections, and general safety inspections.
While each inspector has a specific list of items to look for, we all work together to spot problems areas
for other EHS branches.

How Do I Address Building Issues?

If the problem includes storage, fire extinguishers, plumbing, exit or emergency lighting, or similar issues
contact your building coordinator. A list of building coordinators can be found in the MU phone
directory. The building coordinator will get in contact with Campus Facilities or EHS as needed.

Why are Safety Inspection Checklists Important?

A safety inspection checklist plays an important role in periodically assessing your workplace for
occupational hazards. It is an important element of your occupational health and safety program.

While conducting safety inspections, a qualified safety officer literally ticks away check boxes that help
him identify and record work-related incidents, injuries, or illnesses. This in turn initiates a series of
preventive controls to eliminate the hazard and also helps in record-keeping during safety audits –
ensuring that safety standards are always maintained.

Types of Safety Inspection Checklists

Safety inspection checklists are distinguished according to their work environment. Safety inspectors
must take every unique variable, activities, and risks posed into consideration while framing a Safety
Checklist for a facility or site.

What are the advantages of Safety Inspection Checklists?

Safety inspection checklists are an intrinsic part of any EHS Software and an indispensable tool
that ensures that your work environment conforms to stringent safety standards. Health and
safety inspections allow you to:
 Comprehend the concerns of your workforce and supervisors.

 Gain greater insights and understanding of jobs and tasks that you have limited experience with.

 Determine the root cause of existing and potential hazards.

 Recommend corrective action to eliminate hazards

 Keep track of the steps taken in eliminating a hazard including engineering controls,

administrative controls, policies, procedures, personal protective equipment.

When and how frequently should safety inspections be conducted?

Scheduling safety inspections depends on several factors including:

 Your organizations past incident records

 The size and number of work operations

 The risk quotient that can arise from the type of equipment and work processes

 Even including new processes or machinery can bring new or unknown hazards to the table.
 Hazard prone zone due to the environmental condition or other underlying threats.

Ideally, the frequency of safety inspections should be as often as conducting regular safety
meetings. It is recommended to separate safety inspections and meetings by at least a week –
giving time for teams to implement control actions and focus on issues requiring further action.
Who should conduct safety inspections?

A safety inspection team can consist of engineers, maintenance personnel, occupational

hygienists, health and safety professionals, and also have supervisors and managers to help set
and follow-up on action controls.

A safety inspection squad should comprise of trained and certified health and safety members
well-versed with regulations and procedures, knowledge on potential hazards, and experience
with work procedures involved.
What should feature on a Safety Inspection Checklist?

While Safety Inspection Checklist comprises mostly of check boxes that need to be ticked during
walkthroughs, generating an inspection checklist depends on several factors that are attributed to
the equipment inventory, processes, facility size, and hazards that are typical to your work
environment. While creating a checklist you should examine the following:

 Tools and Machinery

 Medical and First Aid

 Lighting

 Machine Guards

 Sound Level/Noise

 Electrical

 Elevating devices

 Housekeeping

 Materials Handling/Storage

 Warehouse and Shipping

 Loading/Unloading Racks

 Employee Facilities

 Confined Spaces

 Floor and Wall Openings

 Stairs, Ladders & Platforms

What methods are used for carrying out Safety Inspections?

Paper or Excel-based Safety Inspection Checklist

The majority of organizations use paper-based checklists or excel sheets to keep track of site
evaluations, staff safety and equipment performance. While this has become the norm, the fault
lines remain exposed. Manual inspections can cause redundant, time-consuming data entry and
sharing processes, inconsistencies due to improper or false reporting and inefficient mass storage
of data files - making it difficult to retrieve, store and find data.

Digitized Safety Inspection Checklist

A digitized Safety Inspection Checklist enables you to effortlessly complete inspections right
from the field using your mobile device. These intuitive digitally-enabled forms and checklist
enable users to feed data in a consistent format, which can then be processed and assimilated
instantaneously among teams.

Integrating a digitized safety inspection checklist can ignite a tight-knit safety culture across
facilities - enabling enhanced communication and coordination to manage, track, share and store
safety assessment reports.
