The Main window is separated into different areas, Top Panel, Right Panel,
Left Panel, Status Bar, and 3D View Panel.
Top Panel
The Top Panel is located at the top of the main window. It includes the
following tabs:
▪ File Tab.
▪ Home Tab.
▪ Tools Tab.
▪ Visualization Tab.
Right Panel
The Right panel is located on the right side of the main window. It
includes the following tabs:
▪ Design Tab.
▪ Error List Tab.
Left Panel
The Left Panel is located on the left side of the main window. It includes
the following tabs:
▪ Visibility Tab.
▪ Unit Converter Tab.
▪ Material View Tab.
Status Bar
The Status Bar is located at the bottom of the main window.
Top Panel
Home Tab
File Panel
The following commands are available on the File panel on the Home
Tab.
New
Creates a new .tnk file.
Open
Opens an existing .tnk, file. The Open command is also available on the
Quick Access bar at the top.
Save
Saves the open file. The Save command is also available on the Quick
Access bar at the top.
Analyze Panel
Report
Review the analysis data output for the tank from the last analysis.
Run
Analyze the tank and produce reports and forms.
The following commands are available on the Design Tools panel on the
Home Tab.
Optimizer
Opens the Optimizer Utility. The utility uses a proprietary algorithm to
minimize tank raw material and construction costs.
Batch
Opens the Batch Calculation Utility. The utility uses a proprietary
algorithm to design from scratch a list of tanks with minimum input data.
Data Panel
The following commands are available on the Data panel on the Home
Tab.
Link
Opens the Link Data Utility. The utility links tank .tnk file with a spreadsheet
file. The user can import/export data from/to the linked spreadsheet.
Bill Of Materials
Opens the Bill Of Materials Utility. The utility displays the tank bill of
materials information and exports it into a spreadsheet.
Welded Joints
Opens the Welded Joints Utility. The utility displays tank welded joints
information and exports it into a spreadsheet.
Import Data
Opens the Import Data Utility. The utility uses a proprietary algorithm to
import tank input data directly from a generated report file.
References Panel
Material
Opens the Material Database Utility. The utility displays default material
databases and allows the user to create custom materials.
Profile Database
Opens the Structural Profile Database Utility. The utility displays structural
profile databases and each profile section’s properties.
Pipe Database
Opens the Pipe Components Database Utility. The utility displays pipe
components information.
Export Panel
The following commands are available on the Export panel on the Home
Tab.

Saves the current view as a drawing to one of the following file options:
▪ JPEG File (*.jpeg;*.jpg)
▪ PNG File (*.png)
▪ BMP File (*.BMP)

Opens the Smartank Units Conversion Utility. The utility is included in the
Unit Converter Panel.

Shows lines and curves to show the object’s borders and all its edges.

Liquid Level
Transparency
Material View
Assigns a unique color for each material used in the tank, and displays
those colors in the view and legend grid. The utility is included in the
Material View Panel.
Show Window
Unit System - Specifies the unit system used for tank calculations.
Design Liquid Level – Specifies the design liquid level for tank
calculations.
Maximum Fill Level – Specifies the maximum liquid level of the tank.
Normal Fill Level – Specifies the normal working level of the tank.
Minimum Fill Level – Specifies the minimum liquid level of the tank.
Net Working Capacity – Specifies the net working capacity in the units
selected. The capacity is computed based on the difference between
nominal and minimum capacity.
Roof Live Load – Specifies the roof live load of the tank.
Roof Dead Load – Specifies the roof dead load of the tank.
Ground Snow Load – Specifies the ground snow load of the tank.
Maximum Filling Rate – Specifies the maximum filling rate of the tank.
Flash Point – Specifies the flash point of the product stored in the tank.
Boiling Point – Specifies the boiling point of the product stored in the
tank.
Seismic Design Code – Specifies the seismic design code used for
calculations.
Seismic Use Group – Specifies the seismic use group (SUG) for the tank.
Rwc – Specifies the force reduction coefficient for the convective mode
using allowable stress design methods.
Wind Design Code – Specifies the wind design code used for
calculations.
Shell Joint Efficiency – Specifies the global shell joint efficiency for the
design.
Shell Plate Material – Specifies the shell plate global material for the
design.
Shell Plate Minimum Nominal Width – Specifies the shell plate minimum
nominal width.
Shell Joint
Horizontal Weld Type – Specifies the shell horizontal weld type. It supports
three types: Square-groove butt joint, Single-bevel butt joint, and
Double-bevel butt joint.
Bevel Type Plate Top – Specifies the top bevel type for each course. It
supports four types: Single Bevel Inside, Single Bevel Outside, Double
Bevel, and Square Cut.
Bevel Type Plate Bottom – Specifies the bottom bevel type for each
course. It supports four types: Single Bevel Inside, Single Bevel Outside,
Double Bevel, and Square Cut.
Bevel Type Plate Start – Specifies the start bevel type for each course
plate. It supports four types: Single Bevel Inside, Single Bevel Outside,
Double Bevel, and Square Cut.
Bevel Type Plate End – Specifies the end bevel type for each course
plate. It supports four types: Single Bevel Inside, Single Bevel Outside,
Double Bevel, and Square Cut.
Int. Stiffeners Fillet Weld – Specifies the intermediate stiffeners fillet weld.
Intermediate Stiffeners
Intermediate stiffeners area includes an Intermediate Stiffeners Summary
Table including the following columns:
ID – Specifies the intermediate stiffener identification number.
I-req – Specifies the required moment of inertia of the stiffener ring region
cm4/in4.
I-act – Specifies the actual moment of inertia of the stiffener ring region
cm4/in4.
The Roof tab is organized in different areas labeled Tank Roof Design,
Detail of Compression Ring, and Tank Roof Structure Design.
Roof Type – Specifies the roof type. It supports five types: Self-supporting
cone roof, Self-supporting dome roof, Self-supporting umbrella roof,
Supported cone roof, and Geodesic roof.
Roof Plate Standard Width – Specifies the standard width of the roof
plate.
Roof Plate Corrosion Allowance (CA) – Specifies the roof plate corrosion
allowance.
Roof angle to the horizontal – Displays the roof angle to the horizontal in
degrees.
Sketch Type – Specifies the roof plates layout sketch type. It supports two
types: Rows – Type I, and Rows – Type II.
Sketch Plate Max Length (Rows) – Specifies the roof plates layout sketch
plate maximum length for the rows area.
Sketch Plate Max Length (North/South) – Specifies the roof plates layout
sketch maximum length for the north and south area.
Sketch Plate Stagger – Specifies the roof plates layout sketch plates
layout stagger distance.
Roof Plate to Plate Weld Type – Specifies the roof plate-to-plate weld
type. It supports five types: Full-fillet Lap joint, Single-V butt joint, Single-V
butt joint with backing strip, Square-groove butt joint, and Square-groove
butt joint with backing strip.
Bevel Type Roof Plate – Specifies the roof plate edge bevel type. It
supports two types: Single Bevel, and Square Cut.
Roof-to-Roof Fillet Weld – Specifies the roof-to-roof plate fillet weld size.
Plot Top Section – Displays a Plot Section window for the roof-to-shell joint
area.
Detail Type – Specifies the compression ring detail type. It supports all API
650 Figure F.2 detail types.
Top Stiffener Start Angle – Specifies the top stiffener sections’ start angle.
Top Stiffener Maximum Arc Length – Specifies the top stiffeners section
maximum arc length.
Top angle to top shell distance (h1) – Specifies the top angle to shell
distance (h1).
Angle Type – Specifies the top stiffener angle type. It supports three
types: Std. Long Leg Vertical, Std. Long Leg Horizontal, and Custom.
Angle Horizontal Leg – Specifies the top stiffener angle horizontal leg
dimension.
Angle Vertical Leg – Specifies the top stiffener angle vertical leg
dimension.
Top Stiffener Fillet Weld – Specifies the top stiffener fillet weld.
Top Stiffener Sections Weld Type – Specifies the top stiffener sections weld
type. It supports five types: Single-V butt joint, Single-U butt joint, Double-
V butt joint, Double-U butt joint, and Square-groove butt joint.
Top Stiffener Sections Bevel Type – Specifies the top stiffener sections’
bevel type. It supports four types: Single Bevel Inside, Single Bevel
Outside, Double Bevel, and Square Cut.
Top Stiffener to Shell Weld Type – Specifies the top stiffener-to-shell weld
type. It supports five types: Single-V butt joint, Single-U butt joint, Double-
V butt joint, Double-U butt joint, and Square-groove butt joint.
Top Stiffener to Shell Bevel Type – Specifies the top stiffener-to-shell bevel
type. It supports four types: Single Bevel Inside, Single Bevel Outside,
Double Bevel, and Square Cut.
Roof Structure Bay Quantity – Specifies the tank roof structure bay
quantity. A minimum value of 1 is allowed.
Roof Structure Pipe Material – Specifies the roof structure pipe material.
Roof Structure Plate Material – Specifies the roof structure plate material.
Rafter and Girders CA – Specifies the roof structure rafter and girders
corrosion allowance.
Roof Structure Detail Table – Displays the roof structure top and bottom
detail of each bay. By double-clicking a row in the table, a Column
Detail Window is displayed for modification.
Bottom Type – Specifies the bottom type. It supports four types: Flat,
Slope (Cone Up), Slope (Cone Down), and Shovel.
Sketch Type – Specifies the bottom plates layout sketch type. It supports
two types: Rows – Type I, and Rows – Type II.
Sketch Plate Max Length (Rows) – Specifies the bottom plates layout
sketch plate maximum length for the rows area.
Sketch Plate Stagger – Specifies the bottom plates layout sketch plates
layout stagger distance.
Bottom Plate Impact Test – Specifies the bottom plate impact test
requirement by the User.
API 650 5.5.5 Requirement – Specifies the use of paragraph 5.5.5 to use
butt-welded entire bottom in lieu of annular plates.
Plot Bottom Section – Displays a Plot Section window for the shell-to-
bottom joint area.
Bottom Joint
Annular Plate Width – Specifies the standard width of the annular bottom
plate.
Annular Plate Impact Test – Specifies the annular bottom plate impact
test requirement by the User.
Annular Plate Sections Weld Type – Specifies the annular bottom plate
sections weld type. It supports five types: Single-V butt joint, Single-U butt
joint, Double-V butt joint, Double-U butt joint, and Square-groove butt
joint.
Annular Plate Sections Bevel Type – Specifies the annular bottom plate
sections bevel type. It supports four types: Single Bevel Inside, Single
Bevel Outside, Double Bevel, and Square Cut.
Annular Plate Inside Shape – Specifies the plate inside edge shape. It
supports two types: Arc, and Straight.
Tank Anchorage
Top Plate Type – Specify the anchor chair top plate type. It currently
supports only a Discrete type.
Top-plate width along shell (a) – Specifies the top plate width along shell
(a).
Top-plate length (b) – Specifies the top plate radial length (b).
Height (h) – Specify the anchor chair height (h). Measured from top plate
upper surface to bottom plate upper surface.
Gusset Thickness (j) – Specifies the anchor chair gusset thickness (j).
Gusset Top Length (k1) – Specifies the anchor chair gusset top edge
length (k1).
Gusset Bottom Length (k2) – Specifies the anchor chair gusset bottom
edge length (k2).
Set Automatic Values – Run an algorithm to fully design the anchor chairs
and bolts.
Anchor Bolts
Bolt Type – Specifies the anchor bolt’s type. It supports four types: Metric
– Coarse Pitch, Metric – Fine Pitch, UNC, and UNF.
Nominal Diameter (d) – Specifies the anchor bolt’s nominal diameter (d)
in mm/in.
Tensile Stress Area – Specifies the anchor bolt’s tensile stress area.
Minor Diameter Area – Specifies the anchor bolt’s minor diameter area.
Use ANSI B1.1-1974 for area calculations – Specifies the use of ANSI B.1.1-
1974 for anchor bolt area requirement calculations.
Shell Nozzles
The Shell Nozzles area includes a Shell Nozzle Summary Table including
the following columns:
TAG – Specifies the nozzle TAG identification.
NPS – Specifies the nozzle nominal pipe size (NPS).
The actions that the user may perform from the pop-up menu are as
follows:
Edit – Edit the selected nozzle. An Edit Nozzle Window is opened to
modify the selected nozzle.
Copy – Copy the selected nozzle. An Edit Nozzle Window is opened with
the exact information as the nozzle being copied and is open for
modifications.
Delete – Delete the selected nozzle.
Set Focus – Selected nozzle gains focus in the 3D View.
Nozzle commands
Add Nozzles – A Add Nozzle Window is opened. The User may add any
number of nozzles.
Import Nozzles – A Nozzle Import Window is opened. The User may import
any number of nozzles from a spreadsheet with this utility.
The Stairways and Platforms tab Includes a tree structure with Spiral
Stairway, Radial Stairway, Ladder, Roof Handrail, Roof Rectangular
Platform, and Roof Annular Platform.
The actions that the user may perform from the pop-up menu are as
follows:
Edit – Edit the selected nozzle. One of the following Access Edit windows
is opened to modify the selected access:
▪ Spiral Stairway Edit window.
▪ Radial Stairway Edit window.
▪ Ladder Edit window.
▪ Roof Handrail Edit window.
▪ Roof Rectangular Platform Edit window.
▪ Roof Annular Platform Edit window.
Copy – Copy the selected access component. An Access Edit window is
opened with the exact information as the access component being
copied and is open for modifications.
Delete – Delete the selected access component.
Set Focus – Selected access component gains focus in the 3D View.
Tank Calculated Weights area displays all new and corroded condition
calculated weights for each tank component. It also displays the Total
Weight calculated for the tank in new and corroded condition.
The Project Data tab is organized into different areas labeled General,
Company, Owner, and Report.

Auxiliary Panels
Visibility Panel
The Visibility Tree is the panel located on the left of the screen.
The actions that the user may perform from the pop-up menu are as
follows:
▪ Show/Hide : Changes the visibility of selected component.
▪ Surface Color : Selecting this option will open a Color Selection
Dialog to change the component surface color.
▪ Outline Color : Selecting this option will open a Color Selection
Dialog to change the component outline color.
You can use the Unit Converter Utility to convert from one measurement
to another. For example, you could convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit or
from inches to millimeters.
Set Input for conversion
1. Select the conversion unit type from the Type field. The available
conversion types can be configured from the Options window.
2. Set the measurement input value in the Value field.
3. Select the measurement input unit from the Unit field.
Conversion values to each unit are displayed in the Results list.
Double-clicking a result
By double-clicking on a result from the list the value is copied into the
clipboard.
Material View aims to improve the user experience and speed up the
input verification process of each design. Assigns a unique color for each
material used in the tank construction, and displays those colors in the 3D
view and legend grid. Each assigned material color may be replaced by
a user-defined material. It is a key feature for identifying user input
material errors.
Changing Material Colors
Clicking in a color field will open a Color Selection Dialog to change the
material display color.
Status Bar
The status bar across the bottom of the window displays information
about the tank in real-time. Errors, Warnings and Messages quantities are
displayed, and the bar changes colors according to design status.
The Show button brings up the Error List panel to get more information
about the design status.
Secondary Windows
Report Window
The Report Window is accessed from the Analyze Panel located in the
Home Tab.
Optimizer Utility
The Optimizer Utility is accessed from the Design Tools PanelData Panel
located in the Home Tab.
This utility uses a proprietary algorithm to minimize tank raw material and
construction costs.
The Tank Optimizer window is separated into different tabs, Design
Parameters, Attached Piping, and Materials.
Optimizer - Design Parameters
The Attached Piping tab is separated into different areas, Shell Nozzles,
Roof Nozzles, and Nozzle Commands.

Batch Utility
The Batch Utility is accessed from the Design Tools PanelData Panel
located in the Home Tab.
This utility uses a proprietary algorithm to design from scratch a list of
tanks with minimum input data.
The Tank Batch window is separated into different tabs, Design
Parameters, Attached Piping, and Materials.
The Attached Piping tab is separated into different areas, Shell Nozzles,
Roof Nozzles, and Nozzle Commands.

The Link Data window is separated into different areas, File, Data Link,
Parameter List, Messages, and Commands.
File Area
Linked File Path – Specifies the file path for the linked spreadsheet file.
Link File Button – Enable/Disable file link. When the file link is information
messages are displayed comparing design values between the
smartank file and the spreadsheet file.
Data Link Area
The Data Link Area displays the input data for each parameter including:
• Parameter Tab.
• Parameter Name.
• Spreadsheet sheet number.
• Spreadsheet cell.
• Parameter unit.
Add Button – Adds current parameter into Parameter List.
Remove Button – Removes selected parameters from Parameter List. Left-
click any parameter from the list to select it. By left-clicking holding the
ctrl key on the keyboard it allows the user to select multiple parameters.
Parameter List Area
The Parameter List Area displays a list of all included parameters in the
Parameter Checking Template. The user can select any number of
parameters from this list to remove them from the profile.
Message Area
The Message Area displays all messages from the Link Data Utility.
This window contains different tabs with information: Summary Tab, Plates
Tab, Structural Tab, Piping Tab, Misc Tab, Insulation Tab, and Bolt and
Nuts Tab.
Export Button – The user may click the Export button to export the weld
joint information into a spreadsheet for further analysis.
The actions that the user may perform from the pop-up menu are as
follows:
Clone – Copy the selected material. An Edit Material window is opened
with the exact information as the material being copied and is open for
modifications.

By right-clicking on a custom material node in Material Tree, the user is
given access to operations that can be applied to the selected material.
The Add Nozzle window is separated into different areas, Nozzles Table,
and Commands.
Nozzles Table Area
The Nozzle Table area includes the following data:
TAG – Specifies the nozzle’s identification TAG.
Service – Specifies the nozzle’s service.
H/R – Specifies the nozzle’s height or radius (shell/roof) in mm/in.
Orient. – Specifies the nozzle’s orientation angle.
Proj. – Specifies the nozzle’s projection distance in mm/in.

Components Tree, Components, and Commands.
Nozzle Data Area
The Nozzle Data area includes the following fields:
Nozzle TAG– Specifies the nozzle’s identification TAG.
The actions that the user may perform from the pop-up menu are as
follows:
Edit – Edit the selected piping component.
Clone – Copy the selected piping component. The selected piping
component is cloned and added to the Unassigned Component node.
Delete – Delete the selected piping component.
The following table lists eight colors of the RGB model and their
associated RGB values.

In the Color Selection Dialog box, the saturation and luminosity values
must be in the range 0 through 240, and the hue value must be in the
range 0 through 239.
Converting HSL Values to RGB Values
The dialog box procedure provided in the Color Selection Dialog box
contains code that converts HSL values to the corresponding RGB
values. The following table lists eight colors of the RGB model and their
associated HSL and RGB values.
