• It is perfectly normal within the first few days to start to experience slightly
increased pain and swelling. During the surgery, local medications are injected to
help reduce pain after surgery. This medication begins to wear off 1-2 days after
surgery.
• Some patients may remain in the hospital for up to 1-2 days after surgery. There are
some that might need to go to rehab after surgery.
• You will be placed in a large knee brace after surgery. This needs to stay on and
locked in extension until your first post-operative visit.
• You will not be allowed to put weight on your operative leg after surgery. You will
need to use crutches or a walker, which will be provided to you through the hospital
or the office. You will be allowed to put progressive weight down on your operative
leg after your first or second post-operative visit.
• You will not be allowed to drive until cleared by Dr. Mantell. You must be off all pain
medications before returning to operate a vehicle.
• The brace should remain on and locked until your first follow-up appointment with
Dr. Mantell around 10-14 days after surgery. It will get unlocked during the first
postop visit and you will be progressively allowed more range of motion.
• The dressings should stay clean and dry. The initial dressing should stay on for up
to 7 days after surgery. You may change it and cover the incision with gauze and
tape. After the first post-op visit you should not need a dressing anymore.
• The incision is closed with absorbable sutures underneath your skin as well as
stitches that are visible. These will be removed at your 2 week follow-up
appointment. Sometimes there will be no stitches to remove.
• You are allowed to shower after 7 day after the initial dressing change. You can
remove the brace to shower. It is ok to let water run over the incision area and pat
the area dry. Do not rub over the incision. Sometimes a sponge bath may be easier
during the first week after surgery. It is important to not submerge your incision
area under water or in a hot tub until 3 weeks after surgery.
Icing
• It is helpful to use ice around the incision area for up to one to two weeks after the
surgery.
• Ice for 20 minutes at a time up to 8-10 times per day
• Please try to prevent the wound and dressing from getting wet
Medications
• You will be prescribed a medication from the hospital that you will need to take for
3 weeks after surgery.
• Please wear your compression stocking as much as possible for the first month after
surgery on your non-operative leg and on your operative leg .
• Daily exercises such as getting up, walking, and other sitting exercises such as ankle
pumps in your non-operative leg help to reduce the risk of blood clots.
• If you have a predisposition to blood clots or a previous history of blood clots in
your family please make sure that Dr. Mantell is aware as this may change your
medications.
Swelling
Activities
• You are NOT allowed to put your weight on your operative leg right after surgery.
Please note the instructions that were taught to you be the therapists if you were in
the hospital. You can find crutch training videos at www.mattmantellmd.com.
• Keep the brace on at all times and keep it locked in full extension. It must be worn
for sleeping as well. You may remove for showering.
• The brace will be gradually unlocked after your first post-operative clinic visit
• Everybody heals at different rates so it can sometimes not be helpful to compare
yourself to others that had the same surgery.
• You may get up as much as tolerated. If you are experiencing worsening pain
please let Dr. Mantell know.
• Sleeping – sometimes sleeping after surgery can be difficult. An over the counter
Benadryl may be helpful as well as keeping the operative leg elevated to decrease
swelling.
Physical Therapy
• You may be discharged from the hospital with home physical therapy and
occupational therapy that was set up for you by the case coordinator at the hospital.
Sometimes this is not needed and can be ordered at the first office visit if needed.
Follow-up
• Please call the office at 540-667-8975 to schedule a follow-up appointment for two
weeks after surgery. You may also visit www.mattmantellmd.com to schedule an
appointment online via email as well.
• At your office visit X-rays will be ordered, the wound will be examined, stiches will
be removed and medications will be discussed. Your second follow-up visit will be
scheduled at that time, usually for 6 weeks after surgery.
