AI Corner: how can english teachers use ai?

Discussions in a plc

Julian Merchant
CSUF Induction
Spring ‘24
Context of project
● During my American Literature
(ENG 11) PLC, I noticed that we
often drifted into discussing AI.
● We often meandered and didn’t
have much structure.
● My PLC meets every Tuesday
morning for ~1 hour.
● I thought that it would be
interesting to assemble a Google
Slides presentation to document
and inform our discussions about
AI.
Project summary & Goals
● Summary:
○ My PLC was already having informal AI discussions, so
this set of Google Slides gives our department direction
when discussing AI.
● Goals:
○ The goal of this project is to structure our discussions
revolving around AI
○ Create a repository of resources teachers can use with AI
○ Provide an opportunity for teachers to share ideas,
information, and resources dealing with AI
Connection to leadership standards
ISTE Standard 2.1 Learner: Educators continually improve
their practice by learning from and with others, and
exploring proven and promising practices that leverage
technology to boost student learning.

ISTE Standard 2.6 Facilitator: Educators facilitate learning

with technology to support student achievement of the ISTE
Standards for Students.
Data collected
- Google Form the other members of my PLC group submitted
(note: it’s a 4 person group and my mentor and I did not
submit the form)

The results from the

poll were very positive.
This seems like
something we should keep
working on and
developing in the
future.
So far i have…
● The Google Slides presentation we made over the last
several weeks during PLC:

● The results of the Google Form that was distributed to

the members of my PLC:

Next i will…
● Continue adding onto the slide(s) with AI resources
● Keep working with my PLC to have productive discussions
about AI
● I will continue to take notes on the tools and resources
that we bring up
● Push myself to learn more about AI tools
● Take it upon myself to share tools and activities with my
colleagues on a regular basis
A challenge and proud moment
● Challenge: sometimes we have a fully scheduled PLC, so it
can be difficult to find time.
○ Group is a smaller subsection of the PLC, so I wasn’t able to hear
from other teachers on my English 11 team.
○ The data collected with my poll was pretty limited.
● Proud Moment: when time was limited, we always found a
way to incorporate our AI Corner into PLC time.
○ Teachers sometimes stayed later than the meeting ran, so we could fit
in our AI chats.
○ The responses to the polls were excellent, and it seems like we all
got something out of the conversations.
