Reflection Questions:
A. What are your observations while listening to and viewing the two productions/staged performances?
Katy
Compared to operas, musicals have more characters, include choreography, and more lively and
comprehensible lyrics. I loved its gradual curtain reveal of the back. One thing about its lyrics is it is
very repetitive and catchy, unlike in operas. Although this musical scene does not convey much of the
plot, at least it is a good introduction of characters and their relationships with each other.
B. Among the two productions, which one appealed more to you personally? Why?
I'm a fan of musicals more than operas because I can understand it more. The way of singing in
operas is hard to understand for me, and its continuous head voice makes my brain uncomfortable. I
like musicals because it is more fun for my eyes to watch — the synchronization in choreography, the
beautiful sets and costumes, and they have lively melodies of song. I like the themes of musicals just
being about life, which is more relatable, unlike some operas which have much darker stories.
