Material take off (MTO) is a term used in engineering and construction, and refers to a list of materials
with quantities and types (such as specific grades of steel) that are required to build a designed
structure or item. This list is generated by analysis of a blueprint or other design document. The list of
required materials for construction is sometimes referred to as the material take off list (MTOL).

Material take off is not limited to the amount of required material, but also the weight of the items
taken off. This is important when dealing with larger structures, allowing the company that does the
take off to determine total weight of the item and how best to move the item (if necessary) when
construction is completed.

A material take off (MTO) is the process of analyzing the drawings and determining all the materials
required to accomplish the design. Thereafter, the material take off is used to create a bill of materials
(BOM). Inspection does not aid in creating a bill of materials. Procurement and requisition are activities
that occur after the bill of materials is complete.

2. Express procdure of create bill of material in autocad using attribute command.

To create block part for particular equipment:

1. Click on the create block option in the inset tab in the panel.
2. Enter a name for the block.
3. Click select object and select the graphic symbol and attribute to include in the elevation level.
4. For inert unit select unit less.
5. Proceed with creating the block by entering data to store in bill of materials.

Start the ATTDEF command:

Draw the object that will make up block, choose name panel (expanded) and define attributes to
open the attribute define dialog box in configure.

1. Create invisible attributes that you can extract but don’t want to display in the attribute.
2. In the attribute section specify tag which is like a field column name for attribute Ex: enter
capacity at column the attribute contain capacity information (info cannot contain space ).
3. Enter a prompt which P1 similar to the tag but cannot contain spaces.
4. Enter a valve to set a default valve.
 5. In the insertion point of section. Choose the on-screen checked box to specify the location of
attribute.
6. Click ok at the prompt specify the location of the prompted.
7. Then insert the attribute it makes changes in the edit attribute dialog box then ok.
8. To give data for a particular component or object click command entry as “ATT” then object and
enter Yes data and displayed.

DATA EXTRACTION:

We can extract the information from object such as block attribute and drawing properties to
create a schedule a part list or a bill of materials . Extract drawing data and merge data from an
external file export object Properly block attribute and draw information to a data extraction table
or to an external file and specify a data limit to an excel spreadsheet the data wizard extraction is
displayed

1. Data Extraction wizard:

To create a table or text file that reference drawing data across the data tool directly or pick
from the object data in the drawing button. From the insert option area at the insert task bar.
2. DESIGN PAGE:
The page of the data extraction wizard begins the data extraction process.
3. DEFINE DATA SOURCE PAGE:
The next page of the wizard, define data source allows you to specify the drawing, select set or
individual object from which to gather data.
4. SELECT OBJECT PAGE:
After you select a data source, pick the next button to display the sheet object page.
5. SELECT PROPERTIES PAGE:
After selecting the object page, click on the next button to display the refine data source.
6. REFINE DATA PAGE:
After selecting the properties to extract, click the next button to display the refine data page, the
refine data page allows you to adjust the list content and display characteristics before inserting
the table.
7. CHOOSE OUTPUT PAGE:
In the output option area, choose whether to display the data as a table in the current drawing,
extract the data to an external or both.
8. TABLE STYLE PAGE:
If you choose insert data extraction table into drawing in the choose output page the table style
page appear next, select the table style from the table style drop drown list.
9. FINISH PAGE OUTPUT:
The finish page output in the last page of the data extraction wizard, pick the “finish” button to
finish the data extraction, pick a point or center co-ordinate to complete the extraction process.
