● Is about probability, not certainty.
● The foundation upon which
authority and legitimacy are built.
Example: power dynamic in the
PH Media Landscape.
Media Ownership
- Small number of corporations own
the PH media.
Government Influence
- Can exert influence on the
media through various
means.
Ex: regularity policies,
advertising budgets, and
access to information.
AUTHORITY AND LEGITIMACY
AUTHORITY
● A claim for compliance.
● The right of justified claim to use
power.
● Example: a police officer has the
authority to arrest someone
because it's granted by law.
LEGITIMACY
● The acceptance of that claim.
● The belief that a person, institution,
or action has the rightful and
proper authority to exercise power.
● Example: a president elected in a
fair and democratic process.
TYPES OF AUTHORITY
● Hallowed Custom/ Traditional
Authority
- The authority of “how it's
always been”.
● Charisma/Charismatic Authority
- An exceptional personal
gift of grace.
- Followers inspired by the
leader's vision, personality,
or perceived special
abilities.
● Rule by law/ Legal Rational
- Believe in the validity of
legal statutes and
professional “competence”
based on rational rules.
