’manner’ in your notebook.

My elder brother washed his car daily. I suggested him that he should wash his car with less
water. I told him that we unconsciously waste water in everyday life. We should switch off
the taps properly to save wastage of water. The water reservoirs will be ending soon and we
have to stop wastage of water to save it for future generations.

f) Writing Focus

(ii) Write an essay on ‘How we can save water?’ in your own words by following the above
mentioned structure of essay writing, in your notebook. Remember to follow the given
checklist.

Mother Earth has given many gifts to us, and water is one of those precious gifts. It is quite
hard to imagine our life without water. Water is needed for all the plants and organisms to
survive on this planet.

The unfortunate thing is that the freshwater sources are ending up slowly. This is a big
reason to worry that may lead to a water crisis in the future generations. Simultaneously we
need to save the water to avoid scarcity of water that may be caused due to unlimited use
of water.
We can save water using different ways. We should turn off the water taps properly after
use. If there is leakage in any pipe, we should make sure to mend it properly. Watering the
plants should be done in the evening, it minimizes the evaporation process. We should try
to reuse the water already used. We should use minimum amount of water while washing
our vehicles. We can use less amount of water while dishwashing and washing clothes.
Running water can also be stored by making dams. Spreading awareness is an excellent way
to save water. We can raise awareness about the importance of water, water pollution,
conservation of water, etc. in your friends, family, etc.

Conservation of water is needed to save a life, to protect the environment and eventually to
save the planet. We need to make efforts to conserve water to secure our present and more
importantly, our future also.

(iii) and (iv) Read the given inferential questions carefully and answer them.

• Clean water is essential not only to remain safe from disease but also to maintain
good health. Clean water is vital to our health, communities and economy. Our life
depends on clean water: healthy ecosystems provide wildlife habitat and places to
fish and swim. Our economy depends on clean water: manufacturing, farming,
tourism, recreation, energy production, and other economic sectors need clean
water to function and flourish.
• Wasting water may limit its availability to other communities, especially in areas
where water shortage is common. The ecosystem may suffer when water is wasted.
Excess energy will be used in sewage treatment plants to treat wasted water.
Wasting water is also an economic burden. It takes many resources and processes to
purify and make water potable.
• We can store water by making more dams, barrages and water reservoirs.

f) Writing Focus

(ii) Write the summary of the poem ‘Be Glad Your Nose is on Your Face’ using the
steps given above.

This poem takes the reader on a journey of imagining what would happen should a person’s
nose be on the feet, on top of the head, or in the ear. The poet says that the nose is where it
should be on the face but the indirect message is to be grateful for the good things.
Prelutsky used a simple concept of placement of the nose and tried to inspire children. The
poet through the poem shows the reader that it is sometimes easy to overlook some of the
positive things in our lives, and it is also very easy to concentrate on the negative sides of
these things. People constantly wish for more or for something different rather than taking
the time to be thankful for what they do have. They do not take the time to figure out why
something exists or it does, what kind of function or purpose it serves, and how fortunate
that is. The poem conveys a positive message of gratitude and self-acceptance.

crops on fire. Akbar was unaware of the enmity of Jahangir. That year, Akbar managed to
sell the rest of his crops at a good price, but he could not make much profit because his
crops had been burnt. Then one day Akbar rescued Jahangir’s son’s life. Jahangir repented
on his past mistakes and he apologised to Akbar. Everyone in the village was happy and

Section’. Remember to divide it into paragraphs.

There was once a young boy who had problem controlling his temper. When he became
angry, he would just say anything that came to his mind and hurt people. So his father gave
him a bag of nails and a hammer and said, ‘Every time you get angry, hammer one nail into
the fence in our backyard’.

The first few days the boy hammered so many nails that he emptied half the bag. Over the
weeks, the number of nails he hammered to the fence reduced and gradually, his temper
was much in control. Then came a day when he didn’t lose his temper at all. His father asked
him to remove one nail each day that he manages not to lose his temper.

Finally, on the day the child was removing the last nail, his father says, ‘You have done well,
boy. But do you see the holes in the wall? The fence is never going to be the same, even
after repainting. Likewise, when you say mean things in anger, you will leave a scar in the
person’s mind, as the nails did to the fence’.

Moral

Anger is a dangerous weapon like a knife. When you put a knife in a man and draw it out,
the wound heals but the scar remains.

their food and communicate with each other. I like these facts because they are
really interesting and fascinating.
• The worker bees store this nectar in the sacks in their stomachs known as honey
stomach. When their honey stomachs are full of nectar, they go back to their hive.
Then the worker bees from inside the hive take up the honey and store in the
hexagonal cells and seal these cells with beeswax.
• Bees pollinate flowers, which helps us to grow fruits and vegetables. In this way,
they are participating in biodiversity. Honeybees pollinate all kinds of flowers,
including those of fruits and vegetables. Honeybees also make honey.

(ii) Complete the given cloze paragraph by using the word bank.
collect member communicate unlike different deposited wax

waggle smell together larger eggs other male

The honeybee is a very different kind of insect. The honeybee lives as a member of a
community, unlike other insects which live alone. These bees live together in a bee colony.
The queen bee is the head of the colony. She is larger than the rest of the bees. Her main
task is to lay eggs in the colony. Other bees are the worker bees. These worker bees
collected nectar and pollen from flowers. The nectar collected by the worker bees is
deposited on the hive. Then, it is converted into honey. After that, these bees cover this
honey in the honey cell with a wax cap. The third type of bee found in the colony is the
drone or male bee. Honeybees have a strong sense of smell. They use this sense to find their
food and communicate with each other. They perform the waggle dance when they find a
food source.

We usually wonder how this tiny insect makes so sweet and delicious honey. Honeybees are
famous insects known for their ability to collect nectar from flowers and produce nutritious
honey. Once they have collected the nectar, they bring it to the hive and put it in the honey
cells of the hive. Worker bees then fan their wings over these honey cells to let the water
evaporate. When the water evaporates, this nectar in honey cells changes into delicious
honey. These bees cover this honey in the honey cell with a wax cap. The honey they
produce is so healthy that the Holy Prophet said to his followers, ‘You should take the two
that brings healing: Honey and the Quran.’ He also said, ‘Whoever eats honey three
mornings each month will not suffer any serious calamity.’ (Narrated from Abu Hurairah)

My favourite animal is the elephant. It is the large mammal on Earth. It has four legs which
looks like large pillars. It has big fan-like ears and a special body part which is its trunk. A
male elephant has two long teeth called tusks. Elephants are herbivorous animals. So they
feed on leaves, plants, grains, fruits, etc. They are mostly found in Africa and Asia. Most
elephants are grey in colour. Elephants are important for wildlife. They dig for water in the
dry season with their tusks. It helps them survive the dry environment and droughts and
also helps other animals to survive. In addition, elephants create gaps in the vegetation
while eating, which enables the growth of new plants as well as pathways for smaller
animals. It also helps in dispersal of seeds by trees. In addition, elephants are one of the
longest-lived animals with an average lifespan of around 50-70 years. The oldest elephant
that ever lived was an Asian elephant called Li Wang. It passed away at the age of 86.
Furthermore, they mostly inhabit jungles but humans have forced them to work in zoos and
circuses. Elephants are considered to be one of the most intelligent animals. Similarly, they
are quite obedient too. Usually, female elephants live in groups but the males prefer solitary
living. Additionally, elephants have great learning capacity. Humans use them for transport

Setting: A forest in the mountains

army and won the battle.

Beginning: The king of England attacked Scotland and the king of Scotland lost his fight

Middle: The king hid himself in the forest among the mountains. He lost all his hope.

Ending: The king saw a spider who tried hard to weave its web and failed in its every effort.
But at last he became succeeded. He learnt a lesson from the spider and tried again. At the
end he defeated the king of England.

Story

This is a story of the king of Scotland. Scotland was not part of England at that time. The king
of Scotland was brave and wise. The King of England was at war with him and tried to gain
this land. He led a great army into Scotland to drive him out of the land. But the king of
Scotland refused to give up and gathered his army to fight. There were many battles
between these countries. Six times the king of Scotland had his brave little army against his
enemies. His men had been beaten and driven into flight for six times. At last his army
became dispersed, and he was forced to hide in the woods among the mountains.

One rainy day, he lay on the ground under a shed listening to the patter of the drops on the
roof above him. He was tired and unhappy. He became weaker and lost all his hope. He also
became disheartened. It appeared as that there was no use for him to try to do anything
more.

As he was busy thinking, he saw a spider over his head. That spider was trying to weave its
web. He watched it as it toiled slowly and with great care. Six times it tried to throw its
fragile thread from one beam to another, and six times it fell short. ‘What a poor thing,’ said
king: ‘you, too, know what it is to fail.’
But the spider did not lose hope with the sixth failure and kept trying. It got ready to try for
the seventh time with still more care and effort. The king almost forgot his own troubles as
he watched it swing itself out upon the slender line. Would it fail again? No! The thread was
carried safely to the beam and fastened there.

“I, too, will try a seventh time!” cried king.

He stood up and called his men together. He told them about his plans and sent them out
with messages to cheer his discouraged people. Soon he gathered an army of brave men
around him. Another battle was fought, and the king of England was retreated to his own
country. The little creature had taught a great lesson to the king.

for the chance to come in and take over from me, but I don't want that sort of person. I
don't want a grown-up person at all. A grown-up won't listen to me; he won't learn. He will
try to do things his own way and not mine. So I have to have a child.” Chapter 30, pg. 177

(iv) Write a paragraph about the unit, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, in your own

sentences and a main idea of the text, in your notebook.

Mr. Wonka told Charlie about his love for his chocolate factory. Mr. Wonka explained the
how Charlie was the perfect child to run the factory. He came to this decision as he found
that Charlie is the child he was searching for. He was able to run his factory with his
imagination and responsibility. Charlie’s love for the factory proves to Mr. Wonka beyond
any doubt that Charlie was the right person to hand his factory over to.

f) Writing Focus

(ii) Write a summary of the poem ‘The Fisherman’.

The fisherman goes to the sea early in the morning when everyone is asleep and he
struggles his way to get fish by which he can buy bread for his family. He spends half his life
on the shore and half at the sea. So he is neither a man as we are nor is he is a fish. His eyes
have seen the wonders of the sea and also the fear of large sea creatures. His life has
become so much oriented around the sea. He knows everything related to sea like boats,
tides, winds, clouds, etc. but he doesn't know a thing about city life like buildings and lights.
So in this poem, Abbie Farwell has described the life of a fisherman as to show his
profession has become a large part of his life.
