CAS Lesson Plan
Rationale for Art Experience
The purpose of this session is to introduce students to new
materials such as printmaking. Students will be taught how to
create linocut prints and then encouraged to experiment with
printmaking. Students will be asked to think about how they
view and express individuality.

Preparation: Prior to Session

Gather Materials:
● Get tote bags
● Lino blocks
● Carvers and brayers
● Extra paper
● Ink
● Palettes to roll ink on

Preparation: Day of Session
● Put signs outside
● All - put on name tags (Miss/Ms/Mx/Mr _______)
● All - have photo taken & print them out - choose
sketchbook
● All - switch chairs for stools (or a combo of both)
● Prep snack station on reading room table
● Prep tables with tablecloths and sketchbook materials

As Participants Arrive
4:00 - 4:30 pm
● Watch for UGA vans to arrive.
● Meet students at the vans, retrieve checklist from driver, and
walk students around the building as they arrive.
● Nathan: Greet students at front door and remind them to:
○ Grab your sketchbook.
○ Get a snack.
○ Find a seat.
○ Begin working in sketchbook.

● Gracie: will be at the snack station--Make sure the kids get


their snacks and take them to a table

● All: as kids get settled - work on their sketchbook!

Invitation One
Welcome
4:30-4:40 pm
● Continue working in sketchbook. Create a word that will inspire
the work in the sketch book. Word for first session: Individuality.
● Students will be asked to create a drawing that aligns with their
word association.
● Explain individuality: mention likes and interests, where you grew
up, your family/community, how you like the dress, etc to help
with their ideation process.
● Ask students to be sketching and writing down their ideas with
these prompts.

4:40 - 4:50 pm
● First demo: carving demo led by Nora and Elena. Emphasizing
how to carve (not to carve toward hands, also would talk about
depth if they want to make 2 designs) *mention time and time it
takes to carve
○ Gracie will pass out the lino blocks

4:50 - 5:10 pm
● Time for students to draw and carve their blocks. As they are

doing this, be engaged with their creation and offer aid if they
want or look like they need some help.

Invitation Two
Collaborative Art Experience
5:10 - 5:20 pm
Second demo: Demo led by Nora and Elena on inking. Show
students how to put the ink on and make an ink slab, how to
recognize the correct amount and how to get an even layer on
the blocks with the brayer.

Invitation Three
Group Share
5:20-5:50 pm
● Students will be given the time to print/ embellish their bags.
● Help students with correct handling of the brayers and
application of ink.
● Be continuously walking around offering help where needed.

Closing Activity
5:50 - 6:00 pm

● NOTE: At this point, prepare to greet parents at the front door.


● Group clean up of materials and space.
● Make sure to give students plenty of time to gather materials and
clean up area.
● Palette and brayers need to be washed off in sink.

As Parents/Guardians Arrive
● Check IDs for anyone we do not recognize - check against
approved pick-up list

Clean-up:
● Collect index cards and look for common ideas/themes
● Clean up tables
○ Put away materials used
○ Clean up organizers
○ Fold up table cloths
● Put stools away and put chairs back at tables
● Make sure snack station is cleaned up.
